In the hospital, Xu Zhiyi was distracted by what had happened in the past few days. He often held the medical record in his hand, his mind wandering.
"Zhiyi? Zhiyi? Zhiyi?"
Xu Zhiyi was brought back to his senses by Uncle Sun's call, "Uncle Sun, why are you here? Is there something wrong?"
"Nothing. I heard you were in a daze these past few days, so I came to check on you. What's wrong with you? What happened?"
"Uncle Sun, I just caught a cold these past few days and didn't get enough rest. It's not a big deal, don't worry it won't affect my work."
"Zhiyi, you're being a bit polite. Uncle Qian has been watching you grow up, and I'm really happy for you for what you've achieved today. If you have any problems, just tell Uncle Qian, and he'll definitely help you."
"Thank you, Uncle Qian, but I'm really fine. I just didn't get enough rest these past few days. I'll be fine in a few days."
"Since you don't want to talk about it, Uncle Qian won't ask. Just focus on your work."
"Take care, Uncle Qian."
Xu Zhiyi stayed in the hospital in a daze for another day. After getting off work and returning home, he wandered outside the yard.
Oh, should I go in now?
Xu Zhiyi made up his mind outside the yard before walking into the house.
"Dad, uncle, uncle, I'm back."
Xu Zhiyi didn't hear any familiar voice. She searched every corner of the house but still didn't see any familiar figure. She started crying in panic.
I cried out in my heart: No way, it's only 1964, there are still two years before the document is released. Dad and uncle will be fine, they must have gone out for something and haven't come back yet.
It must be like this.
Xu Zhiyi comforted herself over and over again in her heart, her eyes gradually became wet, tears flowed down her face, and her hands trembled.
"clang"
Xu Zhiyi looked at them in shock and ran over quickly. "Dad, Uncle, you're finally back. I...are you all okay? Where did you go? Why did you come back so late?"
Xu Chengde, An Xiangwu and An Xiangwen, who had just walked in, looked at Xu Zhiyi who was crying breathlessly in Xu Chengde's arms, and felt confused.
"My dear, what's wrong with you? Did someone bully you?"
"Good boy, speak up! What happened? Your uncle is here. He will avenge you."
Xu Chengde gently patted Xu Zhiyi's back and soothed her, "Be good, don't cry."
Xu Zhiyi shook her head in Xu Chengde's arms, saying, "It's okay, hiccup. I was just worried about you guys. I... hiccup, woohoo, hiccup, woohoo."
It wasn't until Xu Zhiyan came back that Xu Zhiyi regained his composure.
That night, after dinner, Xu Chengde, An Xiangwen and An Xiangwu once again went to the study under Xu Zhiyi's gaze.
After Xu Zhiyi and Xu Zhiyan exchanged a few words, they also went upstairs.
In the study, sad voices came out through the crack in the door, and bursts of sighs reached Xu Zhiyi's ears.
"Brother-in-law, do you think Guaiguai heard something?"
"Brother-in-law, what Xiang Wu said makes sense. After all, there are all kinds of people in the hospital every day. Maybe Guaiguai really heard it."
"That's what I thought."
"Ah, what kind of world is this? The famine just ended, which was supposed to be a happy thing, but in the end, it was all in vain."
"well."
"We can't make the decision on this matter, alas."
Xu Zhiyi at the door sorted out his thoughts and slowly knocked on the door.
"Knock knock"
"Dad, uncle, uncle, I have something to tell you. Can I come in?"
The people in the house were shocked and said, "Brother-in-law, did you hear it?"
"Isn't it possible?"
"Calm down and sort yourself out."
Xu Zhiyi heard a voice from inside the house saying, "Be good, come in," and then he pushed the door open and walked in.
Xu Chengde was puzzled and asked, "My dear, why are you looking for daddy so late at night? Is there something wrong?"
Xu Zhiyi stirred his hands and spoke under the gaze of the three men, "Dad, Uncle, and Uncle, I want to tell you something. I hope you will believe me."
"What's up, sweetie?"
Under the gazes of the three men, Xu Zhiyi slowly spoke, "Dad, Uncle, and Uncle, I'm sure you've all heard about what's about to happen. These past few days, besides working, you've been shut up in your study, probably discussing how to resolve this situation and how to respond."
Xu Chengde said indifferently, "My dear, where did you hear about this? Don't worry, no matter what happens, Dad is here. Dad won't let you two get hurt."
An Xiangwen's face was firm. "Be good, be obedient and get out."
"Uncle, stop deceiving yourself. If you truly understood what the next ten years would hold, if you truly had a plan for dealing with it, you wouldn't be like this now, worrying all day long."
An Xiangwu was shocked and said, "My dear, you know? You understand? How could you...?"
"Dad, I know the reforms our superiors are talking about. The official document stated that they would be fully launched in the summer of 1966, and would last ten years, from 1966 to 1976.
During this decade, high school classes were suspended and universities were canceled, leaving only a selection of students from among workers, peasants, and soldiers, known as "worker-peasant-soldier college students." After graduating from junior high and high school, those who were unemployed and of appropriate age were sent to the countryside.
This campaign targeted people with unclear backgrounds, teachers and students with overseas experience, and even many innocent people. They were beaten down and sent to the countryside or even more difficult places for forced labor.
