Chapter 6 Inquiry

Early the next morning, Zhang Yumei was waiting for Xu Zhiyi on the road she passed by on her daily commute to and from get off work.

Zhang Yumei looked at her watch impatiently. "Why hasn't she come yet? If she doesn't come soon, I'll be late. She's so annoying. She's just a doctor, what's so great about her? She has it so much easier than us nurses."

"Alas, when can I live a life like this?"

"When Xie Heng and I get married, just wait for me. I'll make sure you all look down on me, humph."

Just as Zhang Yumei was cursing, Xu Zhiyi rode by on a bike.

Zhang Yumei looked at Xu Zhiyi, who passed by her without stopping, and shouted, "Hey, Zhiyi, Xu Zhiyi, wait for me."

Xu Zhiyi heard someone calling him and looked back.

She? What did she want to do with me? Did I have any connection with her?

"Zhiyi, it's me. I'm Zhang Yumei. Zhang Dabing, the third daughter of Captain Zhang. We grew up in the same compound when we were little. Do you remember?"

"Um, what's up?"

"Nothing, it just happened that we met. We work together."

Xu Zhiyi looked puzzled.

Zhang Yumei explained: "You are a surgeon at the military hospital, and I am a nurse there, working in the pharmacy. You should have met me."

Xu Zhiyi was thinking about the appearance of the person in front of him, but he had no impression of him at all.

Xu Zhiyi thought to herself: Do I know her? Am I very familiar with her? I haven't been injured or lost my memory, so why is she so familiar with me?

"Oh, is there something wrong?"

"It's okay. Look, we grew up together, we've had a bond since childhood, and now we both work in the military hospital. Isn't this fate?"

"Um."

Xu Zhiyi was confused and cried out: Fate? What fate? What do you want to say? What do you want to express?

Zhang Yumei looked at Xu Zhiyi, who was ignoring her, and the anger deep in her heart surged to her chest, but she couldn't get angry at her. In this matter, she was the one who was trying to get the cold shoulder. Who could she blame?

But I have to give the Buddha some consideration. After all, Xu Zhiyi and I grew up in the same compound, and our fathers were in the same army. Even if I approached her first, she couldn't treat me like this. Serves me right. In a few years, she'll be sent to the Northwest Military Region.

Zhang Yumei became angrier and angrier as she thought about it. She looked at Xu Zhiyi, who was already far away from her, and said to her from behind, "Just wait. Sooner or later, I'll make you bow your head and look at me."

"I, Zhang Yumei, will only be higher than you in this life, not lower than you."

On this day, in addition to completing his daily work, Xu Zhiyi also did one thing, which was to privately ask some questions about Zhang Yumei.

After all, they are from the same hospital, and any nurse in the surgical department who has been to the pharmacy has an impression of Zhang Yumei.

The surgical nurse had been talking to Xu Zhiyi all afternoon about Zhang Yumei's situation. She'd gone on about her family, how her parents favored boys over girls, and how they'd had three children before finally having a son. She'd said that unlike her two older sisters, she graduated from a technical secondary school, unlike her older sisters who married right after graduating from junior high school. She'd also gone on to say how kind and caring the head nurse had been to Zhang Yumei when she first arrived at the hospital, helping her with almost everything. But that was all an illusion. The real Zhang Yumei looked down on everyone. She'd said that once, the head nurse saw her treating ordinary people differently from soldiers, and she'd given up on her.

Xu Zhiyi nodded continuously, forming a preliminary impression of Zhang Yumei. But what surprised Xu Zhiyi even more was that the surgical nurse told him that Zhang Yumei's personality had changed drastically, and she had suddenly become interested in a rural widower with three children.

Although the widower was a regiment leader, the original Zhang Yumei would not be interested in him at all, let alone announce that she wanted to marry him.

Xu Zhiyi was full of confusion. Zhang Yumei was really strange.

Xu Zhiyi continued to listen to the surgical nurse talking about Zhang Yumei.

About a month ago, Zhang Yumei's mood changed drastically. She no longer paid attention to other soldiers, but spent all day inquiring about the whereabouts of a man named Xie Heng. She even seemed to know which regiment he was from, which unit he was originally from, and whether he was currently studying at a military academy.

According to the nurse in the pharmacy, Zhang Yumei had never even met Xie Heng, yet she kept talking about how capable and talented Xie Heng would be in the future. She also said she would definitely marry him and that he was hers.

Xu Zhiyi was shocked, pondering Zhang Yumei's transformation. Xie Heng? Who was he? Was he powerful? Very capable? Should he ask his father to find out?

After work, Xu Zhiyi sat on the road in the family compound, pushing his bicycle, contemplating the day's events, bewildered. What did Zhang Yumei see in him? What did she want from him? What did she want?

Before Xu Zhiyi could think clearly, he was surrounded by military dependents who were chatting outside as soon as he entered the family compound.

"Zhiyi, it's time to get off work."

"Oh, you're so good-looking. Zhiyi, you're 20 this year, right? Do you have a partner? When are you going to find one? Look at you now, you have such a good job and good skills, the only thing you need is a partner. Do you want me to introduce you to someone?"

Xu Zhiyi politely declined: "Thank you for your kindness, Auntie. I'm not in a hurry yet. I don't want to find a partner yet."

"Zhiyi, they say men should get married when they're old enough, and women should get married when they're old enough. At your age, you're almost an old maid in the eyes of outsiders. Why don't you have any thoughts in that regard? I'll go to your house and talk to your father about it someday."
