The mountain spirit hid deep in the peach blossom forest of the peach demon to recuperate and give birth to a child.
The snake demon brought his wife out of the mountain and lived in Feng Ling's old house. While hatching eggs, he also guarded the house for Feng Ling.
In this way, Feng Ling could finally travel with peace of mind. Two carriages and more than a dozen light horses set off at a very fast speed. In just one day, they were out of the scope of Xingcheng County.
Other areas are not suffering from drought and are relatively better than their county, but the economy is backward. Even with the strictest local management, people's livelihood is still very depressed.
At noon that day, Feng Ling and his group stopped to have lunch on the way, and suddenly saw a team of sacrificial offerings moving up the mountain, beating drums, singing and dancing.
And the sacrifice was actually a young girl.
The girl was dressed in red, with her mouth gagged, her hands and feet bound, and tied to a chair, carried by two big men.
She kept twisting her body, struggling hard, and sobbing, obviously unwilling.
The other villagers all had indifferent expressions, and some even worshipped very devoutly, completely ignoring the girl's resistance.
The two old women leading the group were witches. Their faces were painted with strange makeup, and they were talking nonsense and jumping around in the scorching sun.
It looks like hard work, but, they are totally harming people, right?
"Mom, what are they doing? Are they sending that girl to her death? Isn't this harming people?"
The reputation of their wizards was ruined by people like this. Feng Ling felt itchy and couldn't help but want to meddle in other people's business.
"It looks like a human sacrifice, and the demands are usually huge. If the girl was a purchased slave, or a criminal, the authorities won't care.
It's like the offerings must have come from legitimate sources, which is why they dare to hold such a sacrifice in broad daylight." Su, the witch, was quite knowledgeable and hurried to explain Feng Ling's confusion, although she didn't quite agree with this idea either.
"Human trafficking is fine, but even lives can be taken away at will. This is an abuse of power..." Feng Ling muttered dissatisfiedly.
But she doesn't understand governance and doesn't dare to shout loudly. Every era has its own rules, which are determined by the environment and are suitable for the current regulations.
You can't let it cross thousands of civilizations at once, as it could easily backfire.
While Feng Ling was muttering, Huo Jinxing's secret guard Cangyu had already got the news and came over to report immediately.
"It is said that there are often earth dragons turning over in this area. Locals say that someone has angered the mountain god, so they send sacrifices to the mountain for worship."
"It must be fake. Which stupid mountain god wants to use living people for sacrifice? It will create bad karma and hinder spiritual practice." Feng Ling refuted without thinking.
Cangyu scratched his head. He didn't know much about cultivation. A few days ago, his master suddenly gave him a secret book of cultivation, which made him confused. So he admired Feng Ling for his high level of cultivation.
"It wasn't the beginning of human sacrifice. It's said that a few years ago, a hunter went hunting in the mountains and accidentally offended a beautiful woman. After that, there were earthquakes every day.
Moreover, not long after the hunter came back, he suddenly died. The witch said that the mountain god was angry, so she asked the villagers to take turns sending tributes such as chickens, ducks, pigs, cattle and sheep to the mountain.
Coincidentally, the offerings were actually accepted, and the earthquake subsided."
Cangyu looked at Su the witch cautiously. He really didn't mean to offend her.
"Alas, women are always the ones who are bullied in this world. What happens next?" Su the witch sighed. Although the woman was miserable, she wanted to hear the story.
"After a period of peace, another earthquake struck. People simply built a temple on the mountain and offered meat sacrifices on the first and fifteenth day of every month. Peace continued for many years."
"Then there must have been another earthquake. Could it be that the villagers did something bad again?" This was Su the witch's guess, a typical case of asking for trouble.
“I didn’t hear of anyone doing anything bad on the mountain this time, because it’s considered a forbidden mountain. Apart from the mountain temple, there are few woodcutters there.
Unfortunately, this time the earthquake was extremely violent and occurred frequently, causing many houses in the village to collapse and even spreading to other villages.
So the witch said that the mountain god looked down on the previous sacrifices, so she started offering human sacrifices, and during that time, the earthquakes really stopped.
"So, this earthquake isn't a natural phenomenon? Is it really man-made, or perhaps caused by a demon or a god?"
Firstly, it was a very regular earthquake, and secondly, the amplitude was very small. If it was crustal movement or plate collision, then it would have affected at least a town or a county, not just a village, right?
"That shouldn't be the case. This is the third earthquake in a year, and the human sacrifice is also the third girl.
The first one was bled to death directly, and when the second one was about to be bled, there was a strong earthquake and people were scared away. When they went to the mountain temple again, the human sacrifice was gone.
Third, they wanted to roast the offering to give the mountain god a different taste..."
These stupid things are so bold, it's totally against human ethics. How can they be worshipping gods like this? They are either demons or ghosts, right?
"Suck!" Su Shenpo was shocked. "What kind of evil sect are those two witches from?" Are they trying to kill themselves? How dare they roast a living person?
Feng Ling was also shocked. There is no ugliest human nature, only more vicious ones.
"Go up to the mountain temple, stop them, and call the local officials." Huo Jinxing's eyes were cold and stupid. These untouchables were so pitiful and hateful.
The secret guard took the order and left. Huo Jinxing then helped Feng Ling sit down and said, "Let's eat first. After we finish eating, we'll go and take a look together."
He knew that Feng Ling would definitely ignore such a tragic thing. Well, this was actually their practice.
