The next day, Lin Chen woke up to find no one at home.
"Where is everyone? Isn't it the weekend? Mom and Dad aren't working, and where's Anrou?"
Following the aroma, Lin Chen went into the kitchen and found two large meat buns simmering in a pot.
Back in my room, I ate while checking the data from Taobao's New Year's Shopping Festival on my computer. Just as I finished my steamed buns, I heard my mom calling from the doorway, "Lin Chen, come and move some things."
Lin Chen walked out of the room and saw his parents and An Rou carrying large and small bags as they walked in.
"What are you standing there for? There are more at the door, go and bring them in."
"Mom and Dad, is some shopping mall having a big sale because it's about to go out of business? Why are you buying so much stuff?"
"You unlucky kid, tomorrow is the Little New Year, you should get ready. Some New Year's goods need to be bought in advance. Luckily, Anrou is with us. She slept in until the sun was high in the sky, just like you. We two old folks have to rely on ourselves."
"Mom, the way you're saying that makes it sound like Anrou is your daughter."
"Hehe, pretty much. If An Rou agrees, she'll be your sister now. An Rou, would you be willing to accept me as your goddaughter?"
"Auntie, of course I'd love to."
"Still call her Auntie, call her Mom."
"Mom...Mom."
While Lin Chen was completely bewildered, An Rou inexplicably became his god-sister.
After moving everything inside, Lin's mother went into the bedroom, took out a large red envelope, and handed it to Anrou.
"Here you go, my dear daughter."
"Mom, I can't accept this. Lin Chen already pays me a lot of money."
“That’s what you deserve for your hard work. If he dares to withhold your wages, I’ll beat him up. This is a red envelope from my goddaughter, you have to accept it.”
"Well... okay, thank you, Mom."
"Oh, that's great! This year, the four of us in the family will be celebrating the Lunar New Year together. I'm so happy!"
In the afternoon, Lin's mother took Anrou out shopping together. Seeing that Lin Chen was alright, she asked him to be their driver.
"Mom, Lao Lin is free too, why don't you call him?"
"Your dad drove in the morning, and you drove in the afternoon. Isn't that fair and just? What, do you have a problem with that?"
"No, no, Your Majesty the Empress Dowager, we are about to depart."
An Rou covered her mouth and chuckled when she saw Lin Chen's embarrassed expression. So this is what "the devil is one foot taller than the saint" means.
Lin's mother took Anrou to a nearby shopping mall. They shopped and browsed. When Anrou wanted to pay, Lin's mother quickly stopped her, saying, "Silly girl, how could I let you pay when we're out shopping together?"
An Rou smiled sheepishly. Lin Ma gave Lin Chen a look, and Lin Chen immediately understood. He stepped forward and paid the money on his own initiative.
Lin's mother nodded in satisfaction and waved her hand, "Let's go, next one."
So Lin Chen spent the afternoon strolling around with the two women.
"Look, isn't that Lin Chen?"
"Yes, yes, he was the school heartthrob of our year. He was so recognizable, it was him."
"Hey, who's that little girl in front of him? She's so cute."
Shh~ They're coming this way.
The two girls pretended not to know Lin Chen and continued browsing in the store.
"Mom, this dress suits you well, let's go try it on."
"Oh dear, isn't that too young? I'm already old."
"How could that be? Mom, you're so young. People who don't know you would think you're my older sister."
"Hehehe, let's go in and give it a try then."
The two girls were puzzled when they heard An Rou and the others talking. The aunt must be Lin Chen's mother, she looked very similar, they could tell at a glance. But wasn't Lin Chen an only child? And who was that ridiculously cute little girl next to him?
The two of them simultaneously considered an unbelievable possibility: Could it be that Lin Chen brought his girlfriend home as soon as he started college? And their relationship with his mother-in-law is so good?
So, the news spread like wildfire, and the entire high school classmate group was filled with the news that Lin Chen had brought his pregnant girlfriend home for the Chinese New Year.
The Shanghai quartet's group chat was going crazy, with everyone tagging Lin Chen like crazy. Unfortunately, Lin Chen was carrying groceries his mother had bought in both hands and didn't have time to even glance at his phone.
Finally back home, Lin Chen tossed his things onto the sofa, sprawled out like Ge You, pulled out his phone, and saw 99+ message notifications on QQ. He exclaimed in surprise, "Wow, what's all this commotion? Let me see."
Lin Chen scrolled through the chat history, and the more he read, the more something seemed off. What was going on? This sounded like he was talking about himself! That's right, it was talking about him. Some said he had been a womanizer since starting university, picking up girls everywhere; some said he wasn't morally upright and frequented nightclubs; and some even said he brought his pregnant girlfriend home for the New Year...
Lin Chen was completely bewildered. What was going on? He had just gone out for a stroll, and now it felt like the world had changed.
Just then, Lin Chen's phone rang.
"Hey, Lin Chen, is what's going on in the group chat true? You brought your pregnant girlfriend home for the New Year?"
Lin Chen said speechlessly, "Miss, would you believe me if I said I just climbed 99 floors and then got caught up in this gossip? I just took An Rou home for the New Year, how did I become a pregnant girlfriend? I'm still single! Who's slandering me? Who is it!"
"Ahem, it's Sister Anrou! I was so scared when I saw the message in the group chat. We tagged you in the group this afternoon, why didn't you reply?"
"My mom dragged me out to do manual labor this afternoon. I just got back, so I didn't have time to look at my phone."
