Chapter 58 The Bitter Flesh Scheme 2

Zhou Chenyu leaned against the door like a hands-off manager, watching him busy himself. Even though it was just his back, he was as pure and aloof as a pine tree, giving people a great sense of security.

"Why are you here?" Yang Xi asked, his back to her.

Zhou Chenyu withdrew her malicious gaze and smiled lightly, "I had nothing to do after delivering the things at the government office, so I wandered around and saw the old man, so I followed him back here. By the way, did Chief Yang receive the red bean pastries that I asked Xiao Qi to deliver?"

"Yes, I received them all. Thank you for your trouble, Miss Zhou." Yang Xi walked out of the house and brought in the two boxes of pastries he had brought. After searching the house and finding no one there, he asked her, "Where is the old lady?"

Zhou Chenyu looked at the spot where the old man had been sitting. "He should have gone out. I'll go look for him."

Yang Xi interrupted her suggestion, "No need, just leave the things here, he'll know for himself."

After saying that, he stood up. Before leaving, he looked at her coldly and kindly reminded her, "Although the old man is usually kind and easy to bully, he can lose control of his emotions when provoked. As a young woman, you should avoid these places in the future."

ah?

She spent half a day cleaning diligently, only said one sentence, and then left?

That won't do.

"Yang, the squad leader." Zhou Chenyu chased after him without thinking, watching him stride away from the courtyard. He had missed this opportunity, and it probably wouldn't be so easy to be alone with him again in the future.

Looking at the moss-covered stone steps beneath her feet, she deliberately slipped and fell flat on her backside with a sharp scream: "Ah!"

Yang Xi stopped in his tracks, frowning in displeasure, guessing it was some ridiculous trick again. He turned around and saw Zhou Chenyu sitting there, a slip mark left on the bluestone slab. He immediately strode over to check on her, "How are you?"

He finally paid attention to her.

This self-inflicted injury tactic, which kills a thousand enemies but also harms eight hundred of your own, comes at a truly heavy price.

Zhou Chenyu clutched her right ankle, tears welling in her eyes. "Squad Leader Yang, my foot hurts so much."

Yang Xi lifted the hem of her skirt, revealing a cut on her ankle from which blood was flowing. He pressed down with two fingers, his brows furrowing slightly.

Seeing that he seemed suspicious, Zhou Chenyu secretly pinched herself, gritting her teeth in pain, and looked at him with tears in her eyes, saying, "I think I twisted my ankle."

Looking at her expression, Yang Xi stopped thinking about it and said in a low voice, "I'll take you to see a doctor."

"No, I don't want to trouble you. I can walk by myself." Zhou Chenyu hesitated, grabbing his arm and using it to prop herself up. But halfway up, she fell back down, unable to hold back her pitiful cries: "My legs really can't move anymore. Am I going to become a cripple?"

"It's just a minor injury, how could it turn you into a cripple so easily?" Yang Xi reassured him, then turned his back, bent his knees, and half-squatted down. "Get on!"

ah?

Zhou Chenyu wanted to believe it but dared not, and asked with tears in her eyes, "Where are you going?"

Yang Xi turned his head to the side and said, "I'll carry you to the clinic."

Go to the clinic?

She only had a minor scrape; the sprained ankle was all an act.

If I go to the doctor like this, won't I give myself away?

Zhou Chenyu had been eyeing his back for a long time. She leaned over him, hooking her arms around his chest, her voice trembling with tears, "Then I'll have to trouble you, Head Squad Leader Yang."

Yang Xi carried her on his back and hurried out of the courtyard gate, heading straight for the clinic.

Zhou Chenyu leaned on his shoulder, secretly glancing at him out of the corner of her eye. He stared intently at the road ahead, not panting at all, as if she didn't exist on his back.

The two remained silent throughout the journey, but Zhou Chenyu couldn't contain his restlessness and kept wanting to do something.

In the alleyway with its low-lying eaves, a man's warning rang out, "Watch your head."

"Mmm." Zhou Chenyu lowered her head, unconsciously tightening her grip on his chest.

She lowered her eyes and looked closely at his profile. Unlike the handsome men with fair skin, delicate features, and even a slightly effeminate air under modern beauty filters, he was different.

He had a remarkably healthy complexion, radiating a tenacious vitality, to the point that the lines and depressions on his skin were negligible.

A leaf that peeked out from the corner of the wall fell on his face. The interplay of shadow and sunlight created dappled patterns on his resolute features, giving him a primal, instinctive, and fatal attraction.

Looking at his serious and focused expression, and based on her previous impressions, she concluded that he was just a righteous but reckless man.

If he acted too intimately, she was certain he would abandon her on the spot.

Zhou Chenyu didn't dare to be too presumptuous, and only asked softly, her breath teasing him in the ear, "Yang, you've carried me all the way, why don't you put me down and walk yourself?"

"Your leg is injured like this, just bear with it a little longer, the clinic is just a few steps away." Yang Xi blinked his phoenix eyes and replied coldly.

Zhou Chenyu noticed that his ears were gradually turning red.

She smiled contentedly, wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, buried her head near his neck, and squeezed out two hot tears that flowed into the crook of his neck.

Yang Xi paused for a moment, then quickened his pace and hurried toward the clinic.

Upon arriving at the clinic, Zhou Chenyu was placed on a chair. It was early afternoon, and the clinic was empty.

Yang Xi half-squatted in front of her, looking her in the eye: "Wait here, I'll go find a doctor and be right back."

"Okay." Zhou Chenyu watched him walk into the inner hall before remembering her foot injury. She had been so focused on looking at people that she had forgotten to think of a way to escape.

"Old Shen, where are you? Old Shen." Yang Xi strode into the inner room and called out.

"I'm here!" Taking a half-day of leisure, Shen Yunzhi put away his palm-leaf fan, sat up, and said with dissatisfaction, "What brings you to my humble abode, Chief Yang?"

Hearing the noise, Yang Xi entered the room, pulled him off the recliner, and led him outside, saying, "There's an injured person outside, go and see him."

"Hey, hey, I'm not dressed yet." Shen Yunzhi was being pulled along as he hurriedly straightened his clothes, grumbling all the while, "I saw you injured yourself and you weren't this worried, how come that person is injured and you're so concerned?"

Yang Xi snapped, "Stop talking nonsense."

Shen Yunzhi couldn't resist his strength and could only let him drag him along.

Zhou Chenyu hesitated for a while, and was about to run away, but when she heard the sound, she immediately sat back down. Then she saw Yang Xi, with a chin and a beard, walking over, looking like a precocious and scholarly young man.

Shen Yunzhi looked at the woman in front of him and gave her a meaningful glance. "Is she injured?"

Yang Xi pointed to Zhou Chenyu's wound, "She just twisted her ankle, you should take a look."

Zhou Chenyu looked at them, and Shen Yunzhi straightened his clothes and walked over slowly. "Miss, don't be afraid. Let me take a look at your injuries."

In ancient times, medical technology was underdeveloped, and there were no machines for X-rays. If she was going to die from a sprained ankle, he couldn't really say anything to her, could he?

Zhou Chenyu exposed her wound, stubbornly denying it: "Thank you for your help, doctor."

Shen Yunzhi reached out and pressed down on her ankle, his expression changing as he looked at her: "Does it hurt here, young lady?"

Zhou Chenyu, with tears streaming down her face, feigned distress, saying, "Yes, it hurts."

Shen Yunzhi raised an eyebrow and pressed on another spot, "Does it hurt here too?"

Zhou Chenyu, her eyes brimming with tears and her lips trembling, said, "Hmm, it seems to hurt even more here. Doctor, will my foot ever get better? Will I become a cripple?"
