Lu Yuan took the cigarette, lit it, and took a deep drag.
"Make peace? They probably won't make peace with us, right? After all, we just killed several of them! It's practically a blood feud!"
"Hehe! You don't understand! These days, who has any deep-seated hatred? Everyone's just trying to live a better life. Who's willing to risk their life for someone else? Besides, we've already discovered the secret here! Maybe things will turn around soon!"
Hei Zi, with a cigarette dangling from his lips, glanced around.
At this moment, several team members slowly returned from a distance, seemingly carrying something in their hands.
Hou Qiang's chest was covered in dirt, but he didn't care at all. He waved the thing in his hand with a look of surprise on his face.
"Captain Lu! Look what we've found!"
Lu Yuan looked over at the other person and saw that the other person was holding a bag that looked like rice, but he didn't know what was inside. Judging from the outer packaging, it seemed that it contained food.
"Wow! Where did you get this?" Lu Yuan asked, somewhat surprised.
"Over there, a few of us brothers just went over to take a look. The tents are filled with these vacuum-sealed grains, which should be their rations!"
"Hmm? Rations? That's interesting! Is there a lot of grain in there?"
"That's quite a lot, probably several hundred kilograms! We only brought some with us! How about we get something to eat first?"
"Okay! Be careful! Don't let the enemy sniper see you!"
Hei Zi looked at the food in Hou Qiang's hand with a look of surprise and delight: "Not bad! We actually found something to eat! It seems we have time to keep going against them!"
So the group carefully hid behind the shovel and started a fire to cook. Before long, the aroma of the food wafted out.
Since there was nothing to serve the rice, the group took turns eating. Although there were no side dishes, the rice itself was especially delicious. They hadn't eaten all afternoon, and it had been almost seven or eight hours since morning, so everyone was starving.
After everyone had eaten and drunk their fill, they continued to wait. After all, the place was only so big, and the only way to leave was to go up the rope ladder behind them.
Just as everyone was resting, a noise suddenly came from afar.
Lu Yuan, with his sharp ears, immediately became alert and aimed his gun at the direction of the noise.
After a while, the noise became more and more frequent. The other party seemed to realize that Lu Yuan had not noticed them, so they quickened their pace.
Hei Zi and the others closed their eyes to rest, while Lu Yuan squinted as he watched several figures slowly approaching from not far away.
However, just as the group was about to stand up, Lu Yuan suddenly raised his gun and pointed it at them.
"Who goes there! Stop right now!" Lu Yuan shouted in a low voice.
The figures immediately stopped in their tracks, then squatted down and raised their hands high.
"Don't shoot! Don't shoot! We're workers! Not guards! Please don't shoot!"
Upon hearing this, Lu Yuan immediately took out his flashlight and shone it on the other party. He saw five people squatting on the ground, their faces covered in black mud, their bodies filthy and emitting a foul stench. Several of them were coughing incessantly. Judging from their attire, they were indeed workers, but Lu Yuan still needed to be cautious.
Lu Yuan's words immediately alerted all the team members. Everyone opened their eyes and pointed their guns at the five people.
The men were terrified when they saw a dozen guns pointed at them, and they began to tremble all over.
"What are you doing here?" Lu Yuan asked in a deep voice.
The man in the lead, whose face was slightly cleaner, swallowed hard and said, "We...we want to get something to eat! We haven't eaten all day! We're starving!"
Upon hearing the request, Lu Yuan immediately became interested and then beckoned to the other party: "You come over here alone! The rest of you stay where you are. If I see you having any other intentions, don't blame me for being impolite!"
Upon hearing Lu Yuan's words, the man became excited and waved to the others before slowly crawling towards Lu Yuan.
When the man got closer, Lu Yuan finally saw his face.
"Sir, we are workers here! We were forcibly brought here! They only give us one meal a day, just to prevent us from escaping after we've eaten our fill!"
The man spoke in a trembling voice, clearly still afraid that Lu Yuan and his companions were also bad people.
Lu Yuan smiled and said, "Are you from the gold mining team? How did you get in? Did they just forcibly abduct you in broad daylight?"
"Sigh! Actually... to be honest, they used a shady method to lure us here!"
Seeing that the other party had opened up, everyone felt that since they had nothing else to do, they might as well have a good chat with them and see what kind of tricks these gold mining team members had used to deceive them.
So Lu Yuan said, "Alright! Tell me about it!"
The other person nodded and continued, "They've set up several companies under the guise of recruitment. But as you probably know, in District 5 these days, it's incredibly difficult to find work, let alone even make a living. People in the outer city are practically starving to death every day. It's become commonplace. Your neighbor who was chatting with you yesterday might be lying in bed the next day. We have no money and no connections. The only way to get into the inner city is through other connections, like this recruitment!"
