Chapter 256 Reflection

Lu Yuan smiled and shook his head: "Alright, I won't say anything more. This is the pension and bonus I got for you from the team. It's enough for you to live comfortably for a while. You've done a good job lately, so I've specially promoted you to a permanent position. Just work hard from now on! These are some foods I brought with me. Eat them now!"

After saying that, Lu Yuan handed the other person a can of food from his pocket.

Niu Wen took the canned food with a look of surprise on his face: "Wow, Captain, you have such good stuff!"

"Hehe, it's just a jar of fruit. Eat it quickly, it'll help you recover!"

Niu Wen, however, did not open the can and placed it on the bedside table.

"I don't have much of an appetite right now, I'll eat later! Xiaoting, is the water ready yet?"

Seeing that the other party was about to start a conversation, Lu Yan frowned. He had brought the golden fruit so that Niu Wen could eat it to recover his health.

"It's okay, I'm not in a hurry. Eat it quickly, this canned food will help you recover!"

Finally, thanks to Lu Yuan's bamboo slips, Niu Wen could only eat the can of food in small bites. After finishing the can, he felt a surge of heat throughout his body, but several thoughts surfaced in his mind.

"Oh no, is the captain poisoning me? Why am I so hot all over?" Niu Wen had a bad feeling, but then he dismissed the thought because he felt the pain in his body slowly disappearing.

"Captain, what did you give me to eat? I feel like my injuries have healed a lot!"

Lu Yuan waved his hand gently and said, "Anyway, it's good stuff, a tonic. Okay, I don't have anything else to do, so I'll be going now. Just take good care of yourself, and I'll let you go back to work once you've fully recovered, understand?"

After saying goodbye to Niu Wen, Lu Yuan returned to his office, in high spirits.

7:30 p.m.

After Lu Yuan finished tidying up the files on his desk, he went out of the office and saw a figure standing outside the office building. It was Hei Zi.

After meeting, they nodded to each other, and Lu Yuan and the others followed Hei Zi's car directly to Zhou Qi's home.

In this model, having a job in the guard team is considered a secure job. After all, finding a job in this era is extremely difficult. Apart from risking your life, there are basically no other good options. Although the job is somewhat dangerous, the cases handled are generally not too difficult.

After all, the garrison's reputation had already spread far and wide, so when they heard the name, the bandits basically gave up any thought of resistance.

However, one downside is that the salaries of the garrison troops are relatively low. Ordinary employees earn a few hundred yuan a month, while captains earn a little over 1,000 yuan a month. In this region with extremely high prices, this is basically not enough to make ends meet.

If you use that money to support your family, you'll basically go hungry every month.

Zhou Qi's life was quite difficult. In order to ease the burden on his family, he found a shack in the slums of the outer city to house his family. Firstly, because he didn't have to pay rent there, and secondly, because it was relatively close to the jurisdiction of the garrison.

In the slums around here, there are basically no stable jobs. The younger ones are okay; they can at least earn a living by doing manual labor. But the elderly, the weak, the sick, and the disabled really can't make a living. They can only rely on robbing newcomers outside to survive.

Heizi parked the car on the outskirts of the slums and headed into the slums. The reason for this was that the slums were known for their poor security, making it easy for cars to be stolen. Furthermore, the slums were mostly narrow roads, making it easy for cars to collide with each other.

Following the address, they finally arrived at Zhou Qi's home. Upon reaching the door, Lu Yuanchao glanced around and noticed that the shack was surrounded by a brick wall about one meter high. To prevent harassment from others, the wall was covered with cement and had spikes made of glass shards.

The main gate was a dilapidated iron gate with some gaps through which one could see vegetables growing in styrofoam boxes. Further inside was a shack propped up by wooden sticks.

Seeing this scene, Lu Yuan immediately understood why Zhou Qi was cowardly. His life was different; he was alive mainly for his wife and children.

The door wasn't locked; Hei Zi gently pushed it open and went inside.

At this moment, Zhou Qi was busy planting some vegetables and fertilizing the vegetable garden. Hearing the noise outside the door, he immediately turned around and saw Lu Yuan and Hei Zi, and was immediately surprised.

"What brings you two here?"

Hei Zi, still with a livid expression, said, "I was afraid you were dead, so I came to check on you!"

Zhou Qi ignored the other person's words, rubbed the mud off his hands, pointed into the shack and said, "Those outside, come in and talk!"

Looking at the tiny shack, both Hei Zi and Lu Yuan felt a little awkward: "Forget it, let's talk outside! Where are your wife and kids?"

"Oh, my wife went out to do some odd jobs, and the child is sleeping inside!" Zhou Qi said with a smile, and when he looked into the shack, a kind smile appeared on his face.
