The thick black fog covering the mountains and plains was rapidly receding towards the direction from which they had come. Soon, the sky returned to its original gray hue, and visibility gradually increased. Before long, Lu Yuan spotted something behind the dissipating black fog, emitting a faint red glow as if it were being roasted by something.
"Lu Yuan, there seems to be something ahead, it looks reddish!" Hei Zi said, holding up his binoculars.
"Hmm, I see it, but I don't know what it is! It looks like it came from the place where this black mist came from!"
Lu Yuan quickly took out his binoculars and looked into the distance. He checked the scale and found that there was indeed a red light, like a river, about two kilometers away from them.
Although the air contained a high concentration of impurities, making it impossible for Lu Yuan to see clearly what was in the distance, what he saw there gave him a jolt. Through his binoculars, he saw a patch of red, and the extremely high temperature that had just enveloped the black fog made Lu Yuan consider one possibility.
"I think there should be a lava field over there. Is there some kind of underground volcano or mountain range nearby?"
Several team members nearby quickly took out some maps, which were obtained by geologists through long-term exploration.
Although the landmarks on the map and in the surrounding area are not very clear, their general appearance is still visible, and the locations of volcanoes, craters, and rift valleys are marked in detail.
The team members observed the map for a while, and then compared it with the previous terrain. Finally, they found the problem at a location marked with a volcano on the map.
"Mr. Lu, the nearest place to us is about five kilometers away. There should be a volcano there, but when the other geologists surveyed and drew the map last time, the volcano was still dormant and remained underground, without spreading out!"
Lu Yuan took the map and began to observe it. Sure enough, there was a volcano in that place, but the title said it was an extinct volcano. Although it had not been named yet, it was marked as a newly formed volcanic area.
It was still in a state of not erupting, but the scene in front of him reminded Lu Yuan of a small earthquake that had occurred some time ago. Although the earthquake was only around magnitude four and did not cause much damage, Lu Yuan thought that it might be closely related to the volcano in the distance.
"Now that the fog has dissipated, let's slowly approach and see if there's any volcanic eruption. If there really is a volcano, then it means there must be some geothermal activity nearby that we can use to generate electricity!"
Everyone was overjoyed and quickly packed their things, then slowly ran towards the volcano. Although the black fog had dissipated, the surrounding temperature was still extremely high.
The temperature readings on their portable thermometers were around 60 degrees Celsius. As they walked on the road, they felt a burning sensation under their feet. Despite wearing heavy anti-radiation suits, they were already drenched in sweat from the heat.
"Damn it, I've almost finished this little bit of water, and I'm sweating more than I'm peeing. I feel like I'm being steamed like a bun!" Hei Zi couldn't take it anymore and immediately unzipped his pants.
In an instant, a thick stream of sweat flowed from the other person's trouser leg. The sweat, mixed with the black ash from their body, flowed onto the ground and was immediately evaporated by the high temperature, releasing a large amount of white smoke.
"Everyone, hang in there! Let's find a place and head back as soon as we find it. The temperature here is just too high!" Although Lu Yuan was supposedly immune to all poisons, he was still struggling to withstand the heat. He tried to quicken his pace to prevent himself from sweating too much and becoming dehydrated.
When the group was about 200 meters away from the edge of the black mist, they felt the ground beneath their feet become soft.
When Kuroko lifted his foot again, the rubber sole of his shoe had already melted a bit, which startled him so much that he quickly lifted his foot.
"Damn! The soles of my shoes are all melted!"
Lu Yuan quickly raised his hand and shouted, "Stop! Everyone, go back the way you came. I'll go check the situation ahead first!"
As Lu Yuan was about to leave, Old Qin, who was standing not far away, quickly walked over and called out, "President Lu, let me go with you. I used to be a tester at a heating station, so I'm quite familiar with geothermal energy!"
Lu Yuan turned around and glanced at Lao Qin, who had followed him, and his face immediately lit up with a smile: "Okay! Be careful! Don't fall, or you might not be able to get up!"
Old Qin nodded: "Don't worry, Mr. Lu, I won't let you down this time!"
Then Lao Qin took out a metal detector from his pocket and probed the ground. When the probe of the metal detector touched the ground, it immediately turned red, and the temperature on the electronic display screen continued to rise, quickly reaching more than 300 degrees Celsius.
"We can't go any further. It's too hot here. If we go any further, our shoes will burn!" Lu Yuan said, frowning.
Old Qin thought for a moment and said, "President Lu, let me walk a little further. The visibility here is still not very good. We should be getting close to the lava! If we go a little further, we should be able to see the situation in the distance!"
After saying that, Lao Qin strode forward. Lu Yuan tried to stop him, but he didn't react in time and could only watch him walk away.
