February 1, 2030.
There's only one day left until Lunar New Year's Eve, and two more days until the Lunar New Year. This year, those who are still alive have survived another year of great disaster, and everyone is reflecting on how they got through previous years.
Whenever these things are mentioned, everyone sighs with emotion, but they are no longer saddened by their own experiences. After all, they may have lived for those who died, and they are already quite content with the current situation, at least that's how people in the East District feel.
Many people left the cave and came out, sitting together chatting and looking at the starry sky.
That's right, there's no longer daytime sky, only a bright night sky. Why do I say a bright night sky? Because at some point, more than a dozen moon-like objects appeared in the sky. Although they weren't as bright as during the day, they still shone brightly on the ground. At least people no longer need to carry flashlights or oil lamps when they go out.
Perhaps it is because the Chinese people have an innate feeling for the New Year that even when they encounter a major disaster, they still try to create a festive atmosphere for themselves.
Many people gathered outside the cave and lit a large bonfire. They chatted and speculated about the current state of the Earth. Although there were some knowledgeable people among them, without observation equipment, even their speculations were accepted by everyone. Even if these things sounded true, they were not rigorous.
Lu Yuan secretly smoked a cigarette and hid in the crowd, listening to them talk about their lives before the disaster. Here, everyone was no longer secretive and was willing to share any little secrets. The rich talked about their rise to wealth and the unknown things they had done, while those who had toiled their whole lives listened with satisfaction, without any envy. Now, everyone was on the same starting line.
Suddenly, someone spotted Lu Yuan, and everyone started teasing him, saying, "Our boss is here, why don't you share your little secret with everyone?"
Lu Yuan's heart skipped a beat, and he quickly said, "Hey! Why are you talking about me! I'm only in my early twenties, what secrets do I have to share! You guys go on! I'm just listening!"
But everyone persisted, so Lu Yuan had no choice but to start telling his story about going to school, graduating, and finding a job. When he talked about how he met Xiao Shan, it aroused the envy of a group of single men.
“By the way! There aren’t many girls in our camp, but quite a few of them are married! How about… we all get together and live together?” a shameless young man said.
Immediately, a girl retorted, "Pah! Shameless! Who would settle for you! We want free love! We don't do those old-fashioned arranged marriages or parental matchmakers! They're unreliable! If you want to pursue a girl, show some real talent!"
The boy, however, remained undeterred: "If you're really capable, then you are! Tell us! What do you girls want? We'll get it for you! We guarantee you'll be satisfied!"
The girls huddled together and whispered for a while: "Isn't the New Year just around the corner? How about we have a dance party? You boys can provide the food and meat! We girls can be in charge of grilling the meat and cleaning up, okay?"
The boys beamed with joy at the prospect of success. However, the grain now belonged to everyone, not just them. If they wanted to eat meat, they would have to slaughter the cattle and sheep that Lu Yuan had given them, but that would mean there would be no further breeding or production.
So the boys' voices gradually faded. They didn't know how to please these girls. After all, this was a matter of their entire lives. If they found wives, that would be fine, but if they didn't, they would be at a huge loss.
Lu Yuan smiled as he looked at everyone's embarrassed expressions.
"I have an idea for everyone!"
Upon hearing Lu Yuan's words, everyone immediately perked up.
"I know that no one has any extra food to share right now, but we still haven't finished our work here. So, I'll make an exception for everyone. Anyone who needs meat or grain can sign up with me. Come and report to me after the seventh day of the Lunar New Year. I have some work that needs people to do! I will provide everyone with 300 catties of meat, some vegetables and fruits, and some seasonings!"
Everyone was immediately delighted upon hearing this.
"Boss Lu, thank you! I really don't know how to thank you enough!"
"Yes! I've had feelings for Xiaoyuan for a long time, and this time it's all thanks to you! If I manage to marry Xiaoyuan, Boss Lu, you have to be our witness at the wedding!"
"Pah! Who wants to marry you! You scoundrel!"
"..."
The crowd laughed and joked, treating the incident as a joke.
However, many people still came to Lu Yuan to register, not for any other reason than to wish for a festive occasion.
The next day, Lu Yuan found a few people and brought a cartload of grain to the open space outside the cave. Everyone was overjoyed when they saw the grain and meat.
"Tonight is Lunar New Year's Eve! It's been a long time since we've all relaxed. Here's the food for you all, let's celebrate the New Year together, and I hope that next year at this time we can all get together again for a proper New Year's Eve dinner!"
The crowd cheered in unison. Some people from the West District also wanted to come and join in the fun, but it was clear that a dispute had already broken out there over the issue of food.
Lu Yuan transported the same amount of grain there. As for how to distribute it, it was up to everyone to decide. However, the atmosphere in the West District was obviously not as good as in the East District. As soon as they saw the grain and meat, they started thinking about how to distribute it. Everyone talked and talked, from simple division to arguing, and almost came to blows.
