Then the group returned to the place where the first attack had occurred and continued forward along the broken section, only to find that the exit was buried by broken ice.
"The exit should be here. Let's dig a tunnel first, otherwise we might get trapped here and die if we keep going further and further away!"
So everyone hurriedly began clearing away the ice shards that were covering the cave entrance. However, because the temperature here was so low, even without the blowing of a cold wind, it still wouldn't take long for the ice to freeze solid.
Holding torches, the group shoveled away the ice pieces one by one. When they encountered slightly larger pieces, several people worked together to saw them apart and then moved them away.
However, the project is quite large at present. The piece of blue ice they just removed has been smashed to pieces, but the size of the fragments is still enough to take away.
The group packed the ice together, intending to take it out later.
Soon, after everyone's efforts, the exit was finally opened a crack. The crack wasn't very big, but to be on the safe side and prevent a second collapse, Lu Yuan found some supports to block the ice. So everyone lay on the ground and crawled out of the exit one by one.
After leaving the ice cave, everyone finally felt somewhat safer.
However, the tremor was quite strong, causing many changes to the structure of the cave entrance. They had to excavate several times before finally reaching a brighter place.
As the group walked, Lu Yuan heard what sounded like voices coming from ahead.
"Wait a moment!"
Lu Yuan immediately spread his hands: "I think I heard someone here!"
The other team members immediately stopped and crouched behind Lu Yuan, gripping their weapons tightly, ready to deal with any unexpected events that might occur at any moment.
Lu Yuan tiptoed forward with his crossbow in hand, when suddenly, at a corner, several guns were pointed at his forehead.
Lu Yuan cursed inwardly, but quickly raised his hand. He didn't want the conflict to escalate into a firefight; he wanted to live a few more years.
"Who are you? Why have you trespassed onto this glacier?!"
Across from me was a tall man wearing goggles and a mask, so I couldn't see his face at all. He spoke in a muffled voice, so I couldn't hear him clearly.
"We came from a nearby camp to collect ice!"
Lu Yuan quickly explained his purpose, but his eyes were fixed on the guns in the hands of several people nearby.
The other person glanced at Lu Yuan and relaxed a little; both were dressed like ordinary people.
"Put your weapons down!" The other man gestured to Lu Yuan and his group while holding up his pistol.
So everyone put down their weapons, their faces showing a hint of panic.
Seeing that Lu Yuan and his companions didn't seem like bad people, the other party brought them to their camp and took out a laptop.
"What's your name!"
"Lu Yuan!"
Where are you from?
"From Qingshui City, China!"
What are you doing here?
"There was an earthquake, and the island has drifted here. You should know that!"
The other party then asked Lu Yuan to register their respective ID numbers. After searching on the computer, they found their information.
"Alright, it seems you guys really aren't spies, then everything's fine!"
The man immediately relaxed and then gestured to the person next to him to put down the gun.
"Why did you come here to fetch water? Is there no water on the island?"
Lu Yuan nodded: "That's right. The island is extremely dry now. All the water has evaporated, and there's no extra water at all. We had no choice but to come here to fetch water!"
The other person nodded, then exchanged glances with the people nearby before continuing, "By the way, have you encountered any of our people before?"
Lu Yuan paused for a moment, then pointed to the identification badge on the other person's chest: "You mean a scientific expedition team like yours?"
"That's right, you've met him before?"
"Yes, I've seen them before, but they're all dead. One was found under the ice, and five others froze to death in the cave!"
Upon hearing this, the other party immediately became excited and quickly asked, "Have you found anything important? Can you give it to us? We value this information highly; it's very important!"
Lu Yuan's eyes darted around, then he took a USB flash drive out of his pocket.
"This is the USB drive that was found on the person who was under the ice. You can take a look!"
A look of surprise immediately appeared on the other person's face. He quickly opened the USB drive, plugged it into the computer, and entered a string of code. The USB drive's lock was immediately unlocked.
Finding that the contents had not been modified, I felt much more relaxed and spoke to Lu Yuan and the others more politely.
"It seems you already know who we are. We are a polar research team, specifically here to conduct gene editing in search of new ancient organisms!"
"It's at the Post-Disaster Food Emergency Research Institute, right?"
The other party nodded: "That's right, it's this department. Several of our teams have already gone missing. We are team five. Which team did you find people from before?"
Lu Yuan rubbed his head and thought for a while: "They're from Team Three. All five of them are from Team Three! It's just that we don't know which team the person found in the ice is from!"
