Chapter 382 The Temptation of a Bag of Grain

But the attack failed, and he gained nothing, even losing his life. Fortunately, he was quick enough to dodge the rolling log, otherwise his daughter probably wouldn't have survived to this day.

His thoughts were swirling in his mind, and he was at a loss for words.

It wasn't until Qi Liang shouted a reprimand from the side that he reacted.

"Yes, I can, just a little bit! Is there anything I can do?"

Lu Yuan nodded in satisfaction, then tossed a bag he had taken from his waist to the other person.

"Meet at the cave entrance tomorrow morning, and we'll go to the same place!"

Shi Quan took the bag, somewhat at a loss. Watching Lu Yuan and Qi Liang leave, he finally opened the bag, but immediately closed it again the moment he opened it.

He quickly turned his head and looked around. Finding that no one was paying attention to him, he felt relieved. He quietly hid the bag in his arms and then went to a dark corner.

He took a bottle of water out of the bag, gently put it to his lips, took a small sip, and then reluctantly put it down. He then took out a piece of pork jerky and stuffed it into his mouth.

The savory aroma of pork, mixed with the sweetness of spices, filled his mouth, and he felt as if this was the happiest moment of his entire life.

He had long forgotten what pork tasted like. In the six months since the apocalypse, he hadn't eaten any meat except for rat meat. Only now, after enduring this ordeal, did he feel the beauty of the world.

After chewing a few times, Shi Quan didn't know why tears started falling. He ate and cried at the same time, until the meat in his mouth had been minced into a paste, but he still didn't want to swallow it.

He wanted to savor every last bit of flavor from the meat, because he was afraid that he wouldn't know when he would eat meat again, so he wanted to keep that flavor deep in his heart.

Wiping away his tears, he stuffed the pocket back into his pocket, took out his small razor blade from his boot, and warily looked around at the people. There were many people, and even a slight glance from some of them made him tremble. He felt an urge to stab them to death, wondering if they would discover his secret. He felt as if countless eyes were secretly watching him, and he was terrified.

He quickened his pace and ran towards his daughter. Several people teased him along the way. Normally, he would have retorted, but they didn't today because he was carrying food and water that could give him life, yet also lead him to death.

If others were to target these items, someone might immediately kill him and steal them. He knew the saying, "A common man is innocent, but possessing a treasure is a crime."

The daughter held a mineral water bottle in her hand, closed her eyes and took a small sip. She immediately felt her stomach churning and wanted to vomit, but she held it in. This was a life-saving substance; she couldn't vomit it.

She gently put the bottle down only when her father arrived.

"Dad, I saved some for you, drink it!"

Shi Quan looked at her daughter, and tears immediately streamed down her face again. Seemingly noticing that something was wrong with her father, she quickly stood up and asked softly, "Dad, what's wrong? Why are you crying?"

Shi Quan didn't say anything, but took the bottle tightly, screwed the cap on, and put it aside. Although he already had water, he couldn't throw these things away. Who knew if this would be his last supper?

The girl was quick to understand; noticing her father's strange expression, she whispered again, "Dad, what's wrong? Tell me quickly!"

Shi Quan shook his head and tried his best to keep his smile calm, but the moment he saw his daughter, he couldn't help but shed tears again.

The girl was anxious and at a loss. She wanted to use her sleeve to wipe her father's tears, but she stopped when she saw that her sleeve was covered in dirt.

After crying for a while, Shi Quan finally calmed down and said, "Yingzi, come on, Daddy will take you somewhere!"

The girl nodded and followed her father's footsteps, limping forward. Because there was a lack of wood in the cave, fires were lit only at the entrance and a few key points. There was basically no wood anywhere else, except for a few high-ranking officials who had the right to use wood privately.

Upon arriving at a dark cave, Yingzi felt a tightness in her chest. She thought her father had killed someone, and she felt that her father was acting strangely today, ever since he was called away.

Yingzi gritted her teeth, prepared to lose her father, because she was truly powerless to change the situation. She had decided that if her father died, she would be buried with him.

Shi Quan walked into a dark cave, looked out, and saw that there was no one around.

Then Shi Quan unzipped his clothes, took out a cloth bag, and placed it shakily in front of him.

"Girl, guess what it is!"

In the pitch-black cave, Yingzi was somewhat taken aback, but she still listened to her father and reached into the bag to feel around. What she touched was a smooth, bottle-like object that was also somewhat cool.

She looked up at her father, whose eyes seemed to be shining in the dark cave.

"Dad, is it water?" Yingzi's voice trembled slightly.

Shi Quan nodded: "That's right, it's water, water given by Boss Lu, and food too!"
