Upon seeing the balance displayed, everyone was slightly taken aback. They still didn't understand the cost of living here, what this money could be used for, or what it could buy. They knew nothing about this place, only that the hundred was just a number displayed on their identity cards.
"If we're talking about pre-apocalyptic spending levels, there are 2100 yuan for all of us. That should be enough to rent a place. Let's go take a look."
Everyone agreed with Lu Yuan's point of view, so they looked around. The roads around the factory area were quite complicated, with varying elevations and even some sharp turns. After discussing it, they decided to use the park they had visited earlier as their search center, working in groups of several to search and inquire about renting or buying houses.
"Grandpa and Grandma, please come with us."
Lu Yuan turned to look at his grandparents, and the two quickly went over to them.
Looking up at the time displayed in the sky, Lu Yuan saw that there were still two hours and ten minutes until the major power outage. After a moment of contemplation, he spoke.
"Everyone, please meet here in an hour. Don't wander too far. And please take good care of yourselves."
After explaining the situation, everyone dispersed. The team of twenty-one people was divided into five groups, each heading down one of the five roads.
Lu Yuan and Xiao Shan each helped their grandparents.
"That area up ahead looks like a residential area. Why don't we go check it out first?"
Lu Yuan pointed to the rows of three-story buildings in the distance and said.
Xiao Shan nodded silently, and her grandparents had no objections either. So the four of them walked towards the residential area.
Aside from passing vehicles, there wasn't a single pedestrian along the way. Dust swirled constantly, and the surrounding temperature was very high. Lu Yuan took out his multi-functional watch to test the temperature and discovered it had reached twenty-eight degrees Celsius.
At this time, almost everyone was still wearing heavy cotton-padded clothes, and after walking for a short while in this weather, they were already drenched in sweat.
"It's so hot. Let's take a break."
Lu Yuan glanced at his grandparents, who were panting heavily, and then looked at the distance. The place was so close, but to get there, he would have to take a long detour. The roads here were mostly winding and overpasses with no side roads. If he wasn't careful, he might end up taking a long detour.
But Grandma shook her head and refused.
"Forget it, let's just keep walking. Neither the old man nor I are tired."
"Yes, don't worry about us. We can keep up with you. Just keep going and don't let us hold you up."
Helpless, Lu Yuan could only take off his heavy cotton-padded coat and put it in his backpack. Xiao Shan and her grandparents also took off their cotton-padded coats, and the four of them continued on their way.
After walking for about twenty more minutes, we finally arrived at the entrance of the residential area. There was no one at the entrance except for an intelligent robot on duty. The robot was covered in black radioactive dust that had fallen from above, with only its eyes emitting a red glow.
"Do not enter without permission."
The robot emitted a synthesized electronic voice, raised its gun and pointed it at Lu Yuan, signaling them to retreat beyond the red line.
"Wow, I didn't expect this community to have implemented robot management. It looks like we can't get in."
"Yes, why don't we look around outside this neighborhood? We should be able to find some real estate agencies or something."
So Lu Yuan took his family for a walk around the neighborhood, but they couldn't find a single shop. The entire exterior wall was made of solid concrete, and there wasn't even a layer of plaster on it.
"Why isn't there a single shop here? Does this mean outsiders aren't allowed to live here?"
Everyone was a little confused. Yu Luyuan looked up at the time and saw that there were less than thirty minutes left.
"We can't delay any longer. Let's go back and see if the others have made any gains!"
So they led their grandparents back home.
The group returned one after another, all covered in sweat, and had taken off their heavy clothes.
"So? Any results?"
Zhou Tong shook his head, then took out a cigarette from his pocket and lit it.
"Xiao Chen and I just went for a walk over there and found that it's almost entirely an industrial area, not even a residential area. It was a wasted trip for us. What about you guys?"
Lu Yuan also shook his head.
"Same situation. We both found a residential area, but there were robots guarding the entrance. If we rushed in, we might get shot on the spot, so we didn't dare to go in."
Then Lu Yuan turned his gaze to the others, whose faces all wore expressions of disappointment.
"Does this mean we're not allowed to rent or buy property here? How are we supposed to live?"
Han Wen's hair was already soaked with sweat. He brushed his hair aside, then took out his phone and showed a picture to everyone.
"I didn't find any place to live, but I did find some information about currency."
"Oh, let me see!"
Lu Yuan quickly took the phone and glanced at it. The picture showed a warning sign with various rules and regulations written on it.
"Private trading is not allowed in the industrial zone. Anyone found engaging in private trading will be expelled from the underground fortress."
