The man who called out the name turned his head, looked at Lu Yuan who had squeezed out, and nodded.
"Tian Zhiguang, you've been assigned to Group Five! These are your personal belongings! And your meal card! Lost items will not be replaced! Understand?"
Lu Yuan took the large bag and a meal card, nodding repeatedly.
"By the way, what is my role in Group Five?"
After Lu Yuan finished speaking, everyone present looked at him as if he were a fool.
"Haha! You spent so much money to get in here just to find a cushy job! Groups one through five are all leadership groups where you don't have to do any work! You only have to handle things in the office! What are you waiting for? Hurry up and go over there, little leader!"
Lu Yuan was immediately taken aback: "No way! I'm supposed to be working at the grassroots level, not in an office!"
The man who called out Lu Yuan's name sneered when he saw Lu Yuan's expression: "Are you out of your mind?! Everyone knows that the steel frame area is fraught with danger, and you could be crushed to death at any moment! And you still want to go there? Are you crazy?!"
Lu Yuan nodded firmly: "I want to go to the grassroots! Can the officer assign me a grassroots job? I want to go to the steel frame area!"
"No! Leave now! This place doesn't handle transfers!"
The other party showed no politeness and directly chased Lu Yuan away.
Lu Yuan was a little frustrated after being kicked out. He had come here to check out the situation inside the steel frame of the city and find an opportunity to enter the upper floors through the steel frame. Once he was inside the upper floors, leaving would be easy.
However, Lu Yuan was somewhat annoyed to be assigned to an office upon arrival.
"Damn it! I'd rather go back to my own work than stay in the office! No way! Let's see if anyone's willing to switch with me!"
Lu Yuan looked at his ID card and meal card, which were different from those of ordinary employees. The meal card was marked as "for leaders only," which was obviously to distinguish between those who had connections and those who did not.
"Phew! Let's eat first!"
Lu Yuan arrived at the company around noon. He had been busy with other things at the company all morning and hadn't eaten. Now that he was thinking about food, he suddenly felt a little hungry.
After asking around, Lu Yuan arrived at the Long Group's cafeteria.
Several security guards patrolled outside the canteen. After all, in this post-apocalyptic world, food is a strategic resource, and no one can afford to waste it. Therefore, the security measures are even more stringent.
Upon seeing Lu Yuan enter, the security guard came over, checked Lu Yuan's identification, and then let him through.
Lu Yuan glanced at the time and realized that it wasn't lunchtime yet, but the other party still let him through. This made Lu Yuan immediately realize that it was because he was using his boss's meal card.
Upon entering the cafeteria, Lu Yuan observed the neat rows of service windows, but most were closed. The only open window was reserved for leaders.
Lu Yuan looked at his meal card and shook his head helplessly. He realized that the hierarchy here was so strict and that the leaders had so many privileges.
So Lu Yuan went to the window and got some food. To his surprise, there was meat on the plate. Although there were only two pieces of fatty pork, Lu Yuan knew that this kind of pork was not something you could easily get even in the middle class, let alone in a public canteen like this.
Just as Lu Yuan was about to find a seat, another man serving food turned his head and looked at him.
"Hey bro! This is the staff area! Let's go upstairs for lunch! There's even a tea bar up there!"
Lu Yuan paused for a moment, put down his chopsticks, and looked at the other person.
The other party was obviously just saying it casually and had no intention of getting to know Lu Yuan.
Lu Yuan looked around, then at the plate in his hand, and finally had no choice but to carry the plate upstairs.
Once upstairs, the surroundings changed a lot. In addition to the individual dining rooms, there was a tea bar not far away by the window, where several people were already chatting.
Moreover, the environment here is much better than on the first floor. The overall decoration style looks more like that of a high-end Western restaurant. However, the food they eat is not steak or anything like that in Western cuisine. It is just simple potatoes and two slices of pork, with flatbread as the staple food. There is nothing else.
Lu Yuan glanced at the food on his plate and immediately thought of the food he ate in the industrial park. The food there consisted of protein blocks synthesized from industrial products. These protein blocks had no taste at all and even had a foul odor, like stepping in dog poop. They were hard to chew and swallow. Yet, even this kind of food was unaffordable for many people in the industrial park because the number of jobs available was limited, and not everyone could find work.
These people can only wait for someone to retire or for the factory to expand its workforce if they want to work; otherwise, they can only wait in the border areas outside their locality, enduring hunger and hardship.
The food in urban areas is much better than that in industrial areas, but they still rely on protein blocks as their main food source, supplemented with other foods such as potatoes, corn, yams, and sweet potatoes, which can grow quickly.
However, the situation in urban areas is even worse than in industrial zones in some places because prices in urban areas are very chaotic. There are no unified prices, and if you want to avoid being cheated, it is best to buy directly at the factory gate. However, most light industrial factories are located in industrial zones.
