Chapter Five: Raising Lobsters

Finally, at the end of the road, they found a stall selling lobster seedlings. The stall owner, with a cigarette in his mouth, was stocking the stall. When he saw Lu Yuan squat down and reach out to grab the seedlings, he immediately became displeased.

"Young man, these are all newly hatched shrimp larvae. How am I supposed to sell them if you handle them like this!"

"Um... I'd like to buy some shrimp larvae, how much are they?"

Upon hearing that he wanted to buy shrimp larvae, the stall owner immediately stubbed out his cigarette and began introducing his products to Lu Yuan. Lu Yuan listened to the stall owner talk non-stop for more than ten minutes without stopping him. Instead, he learned some small tips on shrimp farming. In the end, he spent 100 yuan to buy two catties of shrimp larvae, and the stall owner almost hit him.

"Give me some more feed!"

The boss's expression softened slightly, and he brought out a 100-pound bag of feed, saying it was the smallest bag available. Lu Yuan didn't argue.

Then I bought some more fish fry, omnivorous ones, about a hundred or so, to see if it would work out. After all, I didn't have much money, so I had to be careful with my spending. I took a taxi back to my place.

Some of the shrimp larvae died during the bumpy ride, but Lu Yuan didn't care much. There were about a few thousand shrimp larvae weighing two pounds each. As soon as they were put into the space pond, they immediately became very lively. In the morning, the shrimp eggs laid by the two lobsters also began to hatch into some shrimp larvae, which were about the same size as the ones Lu Yuan bought.

Looking at the white shrimp larvae in the pond, Lu Yuan almost drooled.

Garlic crayfish, spicy crayfish, charcoal-grilled crayfish... well, never mind, making money is more important, there are still many things to buy.

He didn't want to spend his days gnawing on tree bark and eating bedbugs after the apocalypse.

Lu Yuan scattered over ten kilograms of feed into the pond, eagerly anticipating how the crayfish would grow up—they'd be a fortune once they were big.

After a quick lunch, Lu Yuan went to the seed company again. Unlike the wholesale market, the seeds sold in the seed company were all packaged in individual bags, and the variety was quite complete. The only difference was that the price was slightly higher than that of the wholesale market, but Lu Yuan didn't care. What he needed now was to find vegetables or fruits that were easy to sell, difficult to cultivate, and could fetch a good price, preferably with a short growth cycle.

After all, he only has three months, and he needs to set aside at least half a month to stock up on food. It's better to do it sooner rather than later, and he should try to buy all the food before the government issues the decree to raise food prices.

There is still a lot of preparation to be made during this period, and we cannot waste more than three months just because of food.

Since there were no paddy fields in the space, Lu Yuan could only buy crops from dry land. After the salesperson's introduction, Lu Yuan finally chose watermelons, specifically seedless watermelon seedlings. The main reason for choosing to grow seedless watermelons was that this type of watermelon had already been withdrawn from the market. Those that could be grown were all in greenhouses, and lacking sunlight for photosynthesis, they would hardly have any sweetness in early winter, so no one was growing them anymore. In addition, seedless watermelons have a faster growth cycle after several generations of breeding and hybridization, and the vines are shorter and do not take up much space.

In this way, Lu Yuan could use his own plot of land to quickly harvest seedless watermelons and sell them for money, with basically zero cost. However, the shop assistant's expression was not very good. After all, Lu Yuan only bought more than a dozen watermelon seedlings after a little over an hour of explanation. It was simply outrageous!

To save time, Lu Yuan rode his electric bike to the market again. This time, his purpose was very clear: to buy chickens and pigs!

That's right. Among poultry like chickens, ducks, and geese, chickens are the easiest to raise. Ducks and geese go into the water and eat shrimp, which can be sold for money, so they can't be eaten. Chickens are more suitable, but selling them for money isn't worthwhile because the space is too small to raise many.

As for livestock such as pigs, cattle, and sheep, Lu Yuan had never bought whole live animals before, so this time he planned to buy one first. As for making money from it, he didn't expect to. Like poultry, he just wanted to increase the biodiversity in the dimensional space as much as possible.

Back in his rented room, Lu Yuan carefully planted the melon seedlings in the field. Then, he placed ten speckled chickens and a small black pig in his spatial dimension and left them there. The black soil in the space would automatically adjust its moisture and hardness according to the needs of the crops, and its nutrients were so comprehensive that no fertilizer was needed. As for the chickens, pigs, and shrimp, he sprinkled some feed on them. The feed issue would be improved in the future. Once the aquatic plants and animals formed a self-sufficient system, they would no longer need to be fed. All kinds of poultry and livestock would no longer need to be fed feed; they could be fed directly with the roots, stems, and leaves of vegetables and fruits.

After finishing all that, Lu Yuan checked the growth of the shrimp larvae in the pond again. The lobsters that came last night seemed to have grown bigger and had even shed a layer of skin in preparation for their second spawning. The other small shrimp larvae, which were less than two millimeters long at the beginning, had now grown to about half a centimeter. Slowly, large groups of shrimp could be seen playing in the pond.

Lu Yuan calculated the time. It had only been seven or eight hours since he put the shrimp fry into the water in the morning, and the shrimp fry had already grown five times their original size. At this growth rate, they should be ready to be sold in less than six days.

Standing up, Lu Yuan rubbed his sore arms, intending to do some exercise. Although the little green seedling would bear golden fruit that could greatly improve strength and physical function, it had only just sprouted its third leaf. It would take another month for it to flower and bear fruit. He could use this time to exercise, otherwise, if the apocalypse came early, it would be terrible before the fruit even ripened.

One must always prepare for the worst. Although Lu Yuan has the support of the dimensional space, it doesn't mean he can do nothing. On the contrary, he needs more training and learning. Time is of the essence, and he must make ample preparations to deal with the apocalypse.

He exercises various things every day. Gyms are out of the question—they're expensive and require commuting. He'll just download a fitness app on his phone. Learning planting and breeding techniques is also essential. Space is limited, so he plans to stockpile more seeds and various poultry and livestock to raise in the future. That way, he can keep up with consumption and won't have to worry about food shortages.

Another thing is the use of various power tools, car modification, trap setting, and the use of various weapons. Also, in the third year of the apocalypse, there will be a massive flood that will submerge all the coastal cities of China and raise the sea level by 100 meters. At that time, a boat will be needed, preferably a yacht. We will not consider this for now; we can learn how to drive it first.

Money! Everything costs money! Lu Yuan scratched his head in worry. He went into his space to check on the shrimp larvae, which seemed to have grown a bit more, which made Lu Yuan feel relieved.

Besides these, Lu Yuan also needed to obtain a large amount of gasoline and diesel. Six months after the apocalypse, all regions would implement electricity control, the Earth would stop rotating, and the sun, which would not set for a year, would not only bring severe high temperatures, but also cause a series of fires, a sharp reduction in water resources, and many other problems.

The downstream rivers would basically dry up, and people's drinking water problem became a huge issue. Water shortage became the most severe crisis at the time. At that time, a large number of animals would die or even become extinct due to water shortage, drought and high temperature. In addition to water, Lu Yuan also had to raise some animals, but that's another story.
