Chapter Nineteen: Shocking Evidence

The distance from the front door to the bedroom was only a dozen meters, but it took Lu Yuan more than ten minutes to walk there. The November night was already quite cold, but he was sweating profusely. It was the first time he had done something like this, and it made this law-abiding citizen, who had been doing this for twenty-four years, feel like his heart was in his throat.

Looking at the room so close by, Lu Yuan did the same thing, gently pressing down the doorknob. Fortunately, it didn't make a sound. He gently pushed it forward, and the door opened. Lu Yuan glanced inside and saw Chen Changhe's bloated body sleeping in the corner of the two-meter-wide bed, while his wife was sprawled out, taking up four-fifths of the entire bed.

After eating the golden fruit, Lu Yuan's eyesight improved significantly, and his hearing became much better. He could clearly hear the two people talking and snoring through the walls, so the room was unusually noisy for him. However, the louder the snoring, the bolder he became, which proved that the two people were still fast asleep.

I glanced around at the room's layout. Besides a large bed that was over two meters long, there was a dressing mirror and a stool next to the door, a wardrobe against the wall opposite the door, and a desk and a single sofa at the head of the bed.

The checks that Chen Changhe embezzled were among them, so the dressing table was ruled out. The wardrobe was also ruled out after a quick tug, since Lu Yuan hadn't heard the wardrobe door open. That left only the bedside table and the desk. The desk was the most suspicious, so Lu Yuan tiptoed to the desk.

He gently pulled open a drawer, which contained some folders and a few packs of cigarettes. He opened another drawer, which contained tea and a small notebook, and ruled that out as well. However, when Lu Yuan opened the bottom cabinet door, what caught his attention was a safe embedded between the table and the floor. Lu Yuan heard the sound of buttons being pressed from the outside, so it must be this safe.

Lu Yuan felt a surge of excitement. He looked up at the two people on the bed, but they still didn't react. Then Lu Yuan tried to lift the safe away, but no matter how hard he tried, the safe wouldn't budge.

"Damn it, it's welded to the ground!" Lu Yuan was at his wit's end. He couldn't think of any way to get the safe out, especially since it was welded to the ground.

Just then, a sound of someone turning over came from the bed. Lu Yuan was so startled that he quickly squatted down. However, the noise only lasted for two seconds. Chen Changhe's wife murmured the name of a snack and then started snoring again. In those two seconds, Lu Yuan felt that his back was about to be soaked with sweat.

The items were locked in a safe, and Lu Yuan had to find a way to get them out. Suddenly, he remembered his dimensional space crystal. This thing had the ability to retrieve objects from a distance. Generally, if Lu Yuan put the things he bought outside, he could reach out and take anything outside as long as he entered the space, without any hindrance or gravity. As long as he could reach it, it was fine.

However, he was worried that the secret of his space would be discovered. If he really entered the dimensional space, the crystal would fall to the ground, and when he came out again, Chen Changhe and his wife would wake up and find out, which would be troublesome.

After hesitating for a while, Lu Yuan watched as time ticked by, then gritted his teeth and entered the space.

There was a door in the space, which was how Lu Yuan entered. He could see things outside and reach in. So Lu Yuan gently reached out and pulled at the safe. The four legs of the safe, which were originally welded to the ground, seemed to have grown legs. The moment Lu Yuan reached out, the safe floated up and gently placed on the ground, quickly returning to the outside of the space. Lu Yuan was already sweating profusely. He wanted to leave this place immediately, otherwise he had no doubt that being in such a tense situation for a long time would give him a heart attack.

After leaving the village chief's house, Lu Yuan ran all the way back to his own home. The big yellow dog in front of the door stared blankly at Lu Yuan as he rushed into the house, then turned around, changed position, and fell asleep again.

The next morning, Lu Yuan took Du Heng to town to catch a bus back to the city, while his girlfriend Wei Xiaoshan was left at home by her mother. Since Xiaoshan came to their house, the atmosphere had gradually become more lively. In the past, his mother always complained about the smoke in the kitchen and was reluctant to cook, but now she was making all sorts of different dishes every day. Early in the morning, she made omelets, lotus root cakes, scallion pancakes, fried dough sticks, and lean meat porridge—four main dishes and a soup. Lu Yuan felt that his mother was being a bit too enthusiastic. When her own son came back, she only made corn porridge. The difference was too great.

After seeing Du Heng off, Lu Yuan went to the hardware store in town and bought an angle grinder. It was said that this thing could saw things very quickly. He also bought some saw blades. Finding a secluded place, Lu Yuan quietly slipped into the dimensional space, put on earplugs, and began sawing the safe. It has to be said that the safe that Chen Changhe bought was incredibly strong. After using the fifth saw blade, Lu Yuan finally managed to saw the door off the safe.

When everything in the safe was taken out, Lu Yuan was shocked. He couldn't believe that a small village chief could have such an ability to amass so much money. There were more than a dozen gold bars, as well as some jade jewelry, the luster of which indicated its immense value. There wasn't much cash, but there was some foreign currency, probably several hundred thousand. What Lu Yuan wanted most was the little booklet. He could hear Chen Changhe turning pages through the wall, so the checks must have been tucked inside. And since there was only this one booklet in the safe, it was clearly the most important thing.

He gently flipped open the booklet, and several slips of paper slipped out. Picking them up, he realized they weren't slips of paper, but checks—bearer checks, the kind you can cash on demand at the counter. There were seven checks in total, and only seven households were being relocated this time. He found one check for 1.9 million and another for 1.3 million. Lu Yuan carefully put them back in his pocket, as if they were precious treasures. He put the others aside. Opening the booklet again, he found it filled with very detailed information, with each item having an amount, name, and date.

"Holy crap! Holy crap! This is evidence of Chen Changhe's embezzlement! Amazing! Holy crap! If this stuff is handed over... damn it, a whole series of leaders will be brought down!" Lu Yuan couldn't help but curse. He simply couldn't believe that Chen Changhe had a habit of keeping evidence. Obviously, he was afraid that he would be implicated one day, and this would be his last bargaining chip when he needed help. Lu Yuan was secretly excited. This was definitely evidence that could get to the top!
