Chapter Seventeen: Acquittal

Lu Yuan spent two days being detained in the town's police station's detention room, during which time he finally figured out what was going on.

The reason the gunshots in the desolate mountains were reported was because Chen Han and his group filed the report, and they were also the ones who provided the bullet. It could be said that Lu Yuan's imprisonment was entirely their doing. He's now blacklisted these people and will settle accounts with them properly when the apocalypse arrives. He won't offend others unless they offend him first. In this critical period, every day is precious, yet this incident has wasted two days of his time. He's absolutely fed up. However, revenge is a dish best served cold. Lu Yuan can't wait ten years, but he can wait at least six months.

Six months into the apocalypse, the coastal cities downstream completely lost their water supply, and people from their hometowns migrated to Qingshui City. If they didn't have any relatives in Qingshui City, they could only apply for housing for the deceased, but the procedures were quite complicated. If they found it too troublesome, they could only pitch tents and live in the square. However, the apocalypse would cause most people to run out of food, which led to a large number of people taking risks and becoming desperate criminals to steal and rob in order to get food. Later, they were all listed and dealt with by the authorities, but that's a story for later. Lu Yuan was sure he couldn't wait until then.

On the third day, Lu Yuan heard someone coming to the detention room. It wasn't a police officer from the police station; it was probably another lucky person who had been released, and their family had come to complete the formalities and pick them up. However, he didn't know how long he would be detained. But he vaguely remembered learning some legal knowledge when he was in school. People who are detained and interrogated can only be detained for a maximum of 48 hours, after which they will be released. He had already been detained for three days, so he obviously didn't fall into that category.

At that moment, the door to the detention cell was opened, and Lu Yuan was led out of the cell. Before he could even realize what was going to happen next, someone threw themselves into Lu Yuan's arms and began to cry loudly.

It was his girlfriend, Wei Xiaoshan. She was sobbing in Lu Yuan's arms, tears streaming down her face. Gently patting Xiaoshan's back, Lu Yuan couldn't help but feel a little tearful himself.

Just then, a thin young man adjusted his glasses and walked in with a piece of paper in his hand. Lu Yuan was a little stunned when he saw him clearly.

"Du Heng? What brings you here too?" Lu Yuan wasn't surprised that Wei Xiaoshan came, but Du Heng's arrival was a bit unexpected.

"The construction period... well, that matter has reached a critical stage now, and it needs your signature to proceed. I called you, but no one answered, so I called my uncle. He told me that you were detained, so I called Sister Xiaoshan and we took a taxi here overnight. After finding out more, I used my family's connections to get the evidence identification information sent back to the Municipal Bureau in advance. Fortunately, it was just a misunderstanding."

His tone remained calm and even, as if he were casually talking about having just drunk a bowl of millet porridge. Lu Yuan truly felt that this was the attitude a brother should have towards Du Heng.

Thanks.

"It's okay, hurry back, you have a ton of things to do!" Well, I just managed to squeeze out a thank you after building up my emotions for ages, and this guy actually wants me to go back to work. What a workaholic.

After calming Wei Xiaoshan down, Lu Yuan signed the papers. Seeing Officer Yan's apologetic expression, Lu Yuan knew this matter had nothing to do with him, but he still thanked him and asked one more question before leaving.

"Officer Yan, can you tell me what exactly happened?"

Officer Yan looked around, then sighed and said, "The bullet has been identified; it's a bullet from decades ago that has been acid-washed. The sound has also been investigated; it was set off by a child. Furthermore, the criminal who committed the crimes has been apprehended in Suzhou."

"Okay, I understand." Then Lu Yuan led the two away from the police station.

When they got home, Mom tearfully dragged Lu Yuan to Grandma's bedside. Because she was worried about Lu Yuan, she suffered a heart attack. Fortunately, she was taken to the hospital in time. The doctor said that if it had been any later, she would have really died. However, the emergency room cost 100,000 yuan, which was the money that her parents had saved for Grandma's retirement. It was all spent in one go.

Holding his grandmother's withered hand, Lu Yuan finally couldn't hold back his tears. Seeing his eldest grandson come out safe and sound, the old woman kept shedding tears, which made his grandfather and father beside him turn their heads away and wipe their tears as well.

However, upon seeing her granddaughter-in-law, Wei Xiaoshan, the old woman's brows relaxed. This was Xiaoshan's first time visiting the family. Although she had imagined the scene of Lu Yuan's parents countless times, she never expected it to be at this moment. With tears streaming down her face, she kept nodding and answering the old woman's questions while holding her grandmother's hand. Occasionally, she couldn't help but laugh when her grandmother praised her, feeling a little impolite. However, her grandmother's condition had clearly improved a lot.

Three women remained in the room, while the old man pulled Lu's father outside for a smoke.

Just then, there was a knock on the door. Lu Yuan opened the door and saw Chen Changhe standing in front of the door with Chen Han and his son, each holding a fruit basket.

Upon seeing Lu Yuan, a hint of smugness flashed in Chen Han's eyes, but it quickly turned into a sorrowful expression.

"Xiao Yuan, I just got the news from the police station. You've suffered. By the way, is your grandma alright? I'll go see her!" He said, picking up the fruit basket and heading forward.

Lu Yuan reached out to block the doorway, his face frosty, and said coldly, "Village Chief, thank you for your kindness, but you should go back. My grandmother needs to rest."

Chen Han, on the other hand, revealed a fierce look on his face.

"Lu Yuan, my dad is coming to see your grandma to give your family face, don't be ungrateful! It's only because our two families are distant relatives, otherwise I wouldn't bother coming!"

"Hehe, really? Well, thank you for your trouble. I'm sorry to have troubled you, Chen Han!" Lu Yuan said through gritted teeth, wishing he could just go up and beat the other man up, but he didn't. He had just come out of the detention center, and it wasn't worth it to beat him up and send him back to jail.

Chen Changhe stopped Chen Han, who was about to make a move, and said, "Son, let's go back. Lu Yuan's family needs to rest. Don't disturb them. Lu Yuan, if you need any help, just let us know. We'll head back now. By the way, it's good for the old man to eat more fruit. These are imported fruits."

After saying that, he patted Chen Han on the shoulder, and the father and son left Lu Yuan's house.

Seeing the fruit basket in front of the door, Lu Yuan kicked it away, scattering apples and bananas all over the ground. He then slammed the door shut and led Du Heng to his room.

"Du Heng, I have something to do today and I might not be able to go back until tomorrow night. Just do things the way I planned before. I have faith in your abilities."

"Okay, then. You take good care of Grandma at home. I came in a hurry this time and didn't bring any gifts. How about you take me to town later..." Du Heng still had that calm and collected expression, but he also expressed great sympathy for Lu Yuan's family's plight.
