Two people were chatting casually in the car. One of them, wearing glasses, was Niu Wen, and the other, who was slightly chubby, was Zhou Qi.
Zhou Qi tried several topics to start a conversation with Niu Wen but failed. Niu Wen clearly had no intention of communicating with him and kept looking into the distance with his binoculars.
With a loud bang, both people in the car were startled. Zhou Qi was so frightened that he immediately crawled under his seat, his whole body covered in cold sweat, while Niu Wen froze for two seconds before returning to normal.
Then Niu Wen patted Zhou Qi on the back and said, "Alright! It's not here, it's over there in the building! Looks like it's one of our people's hands!"
Upon hearing this, Zhou Qi breathed a sigh of relief, then poked his head out from under the chair, showing no sign of embarrassment.
"Cough cough! I used to hear these kinds of explosions all the time when I was in the outer city. If you encounter one, it's best to protect yourself first. Otherwise, who knows what kind of debris might fly over, and if you get injured, it won't be considered a work-related injury!"
Zhou Qi straightened his clothes and said softly.
Niu Wen nodded nonchalantly, his eyes already glued to the binoculars, continuing to gaze into the distance.
Zhou Qi seemed to want to cover up his embarrassment, so he coughed lightly and said, "It's okay, you don't need to keep watching. There's definitely nothing wrong over there. We're just decorations here!"
Niu Wen remained silent.
"By the way, are you new here? I've never heard of you before."
Niu Wen nodded without saying anything.
"Haha, you're obviously new here, but you must have connections! With those thick-rimmed glasses, you'd have no chance of getting into the garrison! By the way, I've never heard of any high-ranking officials in the inner city with the surname Niu. Does your family run a business? You're something else! These days, having resources is what matters. To be honest, I used to..."
Zhou Qi ignored Niu Wenli's attempts to pay attention to him and began to talk incessantly, but Niu Wenli showed no intention of stopping him.
Just as Zhou Qi was about to talk more about his work experience in the outer city, Niu Wen suddenly raised his hand and made a shushing gesture.
Upon seeing this, Zhou Qi's mouth dropped open. He cautiously approached and asked, "Brother, is something wrong?"
Niu Wen pointed towards the building in the distance and said, "Two people came out!"
Zhou Qi quickly took out his binoculars and looked around. Then he let out a long sigh of relief and said, "Brother, you're making a big fuss. These are our garrison members! Didn't you see their uniforms? You didn't think they were bandits who escaped from inside, did you? You know, newcomers are always eager for credit, which is understandable. I was like that when I first came here, always thinking about getting some credit so that the higher-ups would be happy and promote me!"
“These two aren’t our people!” Niu Wen said to himself, ignoring Zhou Qi’s nagging.
Upon hearing Niu Wen's words, Zhou Qi was immediately taken aback: "What? You're saying those two aren't our people? How did you figure that out? You could have seen their faces from this distance? It's pitch black; even with binoculars, you couldn't see anything clearly! Are your glasses even real?"
"That's right! Those two aren't our people! Our people usually wear shoulder boards when they go out! And they all carry their own special belts with holsters on them for this mission. Those two aren't wearing shoulder boards or belts, so it's obvious they're not our people!"
"No way! You must be mistaken! It's probably one of our people on patrol! Not wearing shoulder patches and a belt doesn't mean anything!" Zhou Qi still looked unconvinced.
"Hehe! If you're caught not wearing your shoulder insignia and belt, you'll have your bonus deducted for the month. If it were you, would you not wear them on such an important mission?" Niu Wen put down his binoculars, stared at Zhou Qi, and asked.
Zhou Qi was somewhat speechless after Niu Wen's question, but relying on his seniority, he rubbed his collar and said, "Not bringing these things shouldn't be a big deal! Your reasoning is basically invalid! I already said it's definitely one of ours! How about we make a bet?"
Zhou Qi's words were just a casual remark, to which Niu Wen replied, "Sure! I'll bet a month's salary!"
"Uh... this... it's during working hours! Never mind, I was just saying it offhand! Haha!" Zhou Qi laughed awkwardly, but inwardly he was cursing Niu Wen for being so bad at conversation.
Niu Wen ignored the other party and began checking his gun. After confirming that everything was in order, he put it back in its holster.
“Go down and take a look! If these two people really are Pang Rui, we’ll have a chance for promotion this time!” Niu Wen glanced at the two people getting closer and closer again and said to Zhou Qi.
Hearing Niu Wen say he was going to go out and ask, Zhou Qi was a little confused: "Uh... is that necessary? Can't we just get out of the car and ask when they come over? Won't it be dangerous to go over like this?"
Niu Wen glanced at Zhou Qi, then said with a hint of disdain, "Didn't you just say you didn't believe these two were bandits? If they're our own people, we can go ask them what's going on inside! There's no danger, so what are you afraid of?"
Zhou Qi was speechless for a moment: "Ahem, why would I be afraid! Besides, we have guns, what are we afraid of! Let's go!"
