Chapter Thirty-Two: The Living Corpse

The fog in the mountains was very thick. After climbing for a long time, Yue Jiu Nian finally carved out a path for herself. However, by the time she reached the halfway point, it was already completely dark.

"Damn, why is the miasma so strong here?"

The forest is filled with towering trees that block out the sun, and because it is a damp area, the night is filled with a white, miasma-like atmosphere.

While using a flashlight to find her way and searching for a place to rest, Yue Jiu Nian suddenly seemed to see a light in the distance!

"Oh, do you think anyone would live in this shabby place? It's rare to find such a remote place in the mountains."

Seeing the light, Yue Jiu Nian naturally decided to go and see what was going on, since if there were really people there, she could stay the night.

Following the distant lights, Yue Jiu Nian gradually walked out of the woods and came to a canyon. In the canyon, there was a very old bamboo house, next to which was a waterfall and a large waterwheel. The water from the waterfall flowed straight down onto the waterwheel, making it spin very fast, with a loud splashing sound.

This bamboo house isn't very tall, only three stories. The upstairs is dark because there are no lights on. There are two large lanterns hanging at the entrance downstairs, with candles lit inside. The lanterns are white and of an old style. At first glance, you might think this family is holding a funeral.

The light that Yue Jiu Nian saw earlier was the lantern hanging in front of the bamboo house, except that the lantern was white.

Now that they had found a house, it was natural for Yue Jiu Nian to ask the owner for a place to stay. She turned off her flashlight, took a few steps forward, and knocked on the door.

"Hello, is anyone here? I'm from outside the mountains, could I stay here for the night?"

Yue Jiu knocked politely on the door, but it was as if no one was inside; there was no response and no one came to open the door.

"Is anyone there...?"

Seeing that there was no movement inside, Yue Jiu Nian suspected that no one was inside or that the owner had gone out. She reached out and gently pushed the bamboo door, and to her surprise, she actually managed to open it.

"Oh, so the door wasn't locked."

The door opened, and the room was dark inside with no lights, except for the light from the lantern outside the door.

After Yue Jiu Nian pushed the door open, she went inside. She turned on her flashlight again, trying to find an oil lamp or candles, but found that there was only a table and a few chairs in the room, and nothing else.

Seeing this, Yue Jiu Nian felt very strange. There were lanterns hanging at the entrance of the bamboo house, but the lights were off and there was no one inside. There wasn't even a candle in sight. Something seemed off about this house.

"Da da da~"

Just as Yue Jiunian was feeling puzzled, a series of heavy footsteps suddenly came from the bamboo building. The sudden appearance of the footsteps in this quiet place made Yue Jiunian instantly alert.

"Who is it?!"

Yue Jiu immediately turned her flashlight toward the sound of footsteps and saw a staircase at the corner of the house. A thin figure was coming down the stairs, and the footsteps belonged to this figure.

Yue Jiu shone her flashlight on the figure, squinted, and looked intently at it, saying, "Hello, are you the owner? I'm a tourist from out of town, may I stay here for the night?"

'Tap tap tap~' The figure quickly descended the stairs. Yue Jiu Nian looked down and saw that it was an old lady dressed in the clothing of some ethnic minority.

The old lady didn't say anything after hearing Yue Jiunian's words. She just walked towards Yue Jiunian step by step. Her appearance was a bit strange. She walked past without expression or looking to the side, as if she hadn't noticed that there was an outsider in her house.

Seeing her like this, Yue Jiu Nian wanted to speak again, but before she could speak, the old lady had already walked up to her.

Suddenly, Yue Jiu Nian smelled a strange odor, a smell that seemed to be a mixture of the stench of rotting flesh and the smell of medicinal herbs. It smelled very strange, and the source of the odor was the old woman in front of her.

The old lady had already walked up to Yue Jiunian, but still showed no sign of stopping. Yue Jiunian saw that she was ignoring her and continuing to walk forward, so she made way for her.

'Da da da~'

After Yue Jiu made way for the old lady, he watched her walk away expressionlessly until she sat down on a chair by the door.

Seeing the old lady's expression, Yue Jiu Nian roughly guessed what was going on, but she didn't say anything or make any move. She just watched the old lady, wanting to see what she was going to do.

Once the old woman sat down, she didn't move at all. She sat there quietly, as if waiting for someone.

Yue Jiu Nian found her increasingly strange and didn't understand what she was up to, so she simply sat down on the chair next to her and waited together.

Just as the two were sitting quietly, the door suddenly creaked open from the outside, and a tall, middle-aged man wearing the same clothes as the old lady walked in.

The man spotted Yue Jiunian the moment he entered. He grabbed the old woman who approached him with a wary expression and coldly asked Yue Jiunian, "Who are you? What are you doing here?!"

As soon as the man entered, Yue Jiu Nian could see his face clearly by the light. He looked somewhat like the old lady, so she guessed he was her son. She said politely, "Hello, you must be the old lady's son. I came from outside the mountains and would like to stay here for the night. Would that be convenient for you?"

When the man entered, the old lady's expression changed from blank to very happy. She went forward to greet him with a big smile, and the man helped the old lady up.

Seeing the old lady laughing so happily, Yue Jiu Nian almost couldn't bear to look at her face, because she vaguely saw that the old lady's face seemed to be unable to hold back her smile, as if her skin was about to crack open.

That's right, this old woman is no longer alive. Yue Jiu Nian knew this from the smell on her body. She must have been created as a living corpse by someone using drugs. The reason she ignored Yue Jiu Nian and was so happy to see her son was because her consciousness was no longer clear. She only remembered the most important person in her heart.

The man seemed to notice his mother's condition as well. He helped the old lady up and spoke to her softly, "Mom, your son is back. You've been waiting all day. Go and get some rest."

After he finished speaking, he was about to take the old lady upstairs to rest. Before leaving, he said to Yue Jiu, "There is an empty room on the first floor. You can rest there for the night."

Upon hearing this, Yue Jiu realized that the homeowner was willing to take her in for the night.
