"It's a very heartwarming story."
Even though he already knew part of it, Guangyou's lips still curled up in a smile.
He didn't think the two of them would develop any feelings for each other at this point.
Back then, both Professor Agasa and Fusae were still quite young.
Talking about these things gives off a sense of trying to be clever.
It's a very simple and straightforward story about helping others overcome fear and get out of their psychological shadows.
"So, Doctor, you and that girl became friends, and then you went to school together every day?"
Actually, Ayumi's thoughts are very simple.
She didn't think there was anything wrong with her good friends going to school together.
But Mitsuhiko and Genta interpreted it differently.
The two men wore teasing smiles and didn't say anything, only chuckling a few times.
Professor Agasa laughed, looking a little embarrassed.
He quickly said:
"Actually, it was only in the autumn of that year."
"Only in autumn?" Ayumi didn't quite understand the example in that sentence.
"Did you move?" Ai asked.
She learned of this agreement between the two from Guangyou.
But this was the first time she had heard the specific details of the story from back then.
"Yes," Dr. Agasa replied calmly, though with a hint of regret in his voice.
Forty years have passed, and although Dr. Agasa still feels regret, his mindset has improved considerably.
He said:
It was a rainy morning in late November.
"I waited for her at the Noi house door as usual."
"But I waited and waited, and she never came."
"I wonder if she has a cold or something that's preventing her from going to school."
"So after school, I went to her house to visit her."
"As it turned out, her neighbor told me that she moved out early that morning."
"Huh? She moved away?" Ayumi frowned.
She originally thought it was a happy story.
The result, however, was a regrettable story.
Upon learning of this, Mitsuhiko and Genta said:
"Didn't she tell the doctor?"
"Shouldn't you at least say goodbye?"
"No," Dr. Agasa quickly shook his head in denial.
Mitsuhiko and Genta didn't think much about the idea of "separation."
In this matter, they did not fully consider the other person's feelings.
Perhaps it's because they're inexperienced in the ways of the world, but their thinking is still quite simple.
Of course, this is not a bad thing.
They felt it was right to say goodbye to good friends before moving.
That's why I don't understand.
Only by putting yourself in the little girl's shoes can you understand her.
As a girl herself, Ai naturally understood, and she said:
"It must be that she wanted to say it but couldn't bring herself to."
"Because goodbye is a sad word that will hurt each other's hearts when we part."
The three, being too young to fully grasp the perspective of a little girl, found it somewhat difficult to understand.
"But they just walked away silently without saying anything."
"This is just too heartbreaking."
After glancing at the two of them, Guangyou said:
"Actually, it would be very hurtful even if you said it to my face."
"Some people find it difficult to talk about sad topics like 'separation' in front of the other person."
"And I think she must have said something to the doctor, right?"
"She just didn't want to say goodbye to the doctor in person."
Everyone's eyes turned to Professor Agasa.
"She said something to me."
"That postcard is the one I found in my mailbox that day."
"But there's no stamp on this postcard," Mitsuhiko noticed the detail.
“This means she dropped it into the doctor’s mailbox before she moved,” Kōyū said, looking down at the contents of the postcard.
"What does it say?" Genta asked curiously.
Looking up at Professor Agasa and seeing him nod, Kōsuke read aloud the contents of the postcard:
"Thank you so much for these past three months."
"It's so great to have met Agasa. I'm really happy to have met Agasa."
"I don't like saying goodbye, so I'll just say goodbye."
"By the way, let's make a deal!"
"Ten years from now, before the sun sets, let's meet again in that place full of memories."
"If we don't see it, we'll wait until the next decade."
"Even when I become an old woman, I will keep waiting."
"So if you're free at that time, come and meet me."
"Give this to my very, very favorite Agasa."
"November 24th, Class 4-A, Kinoshita..."
"The words at the end are too blurry to read."
The words that followed have become blurred for some reason.
Although Kōyū knew that it was Fusae's name written on it, he didn't say so.
It's best to leave this to Professor Agasa himself.
"I think it probably got wet from the rain when I put it in the mailbox," Professor Agasa guessed.
"Is it really not because of the tears..." Kōyū murmured to himself, his hand tracing the wet stain on the postcard.
"I hope not."
In fact, even Ai herself didn't think it could have been from being wet by the rain.
But compared to tears, rain seems less sorrowful.
After she finished speaking, she asked:
"Then what?"
"Doctor, have you gone to see this Ms. Kinoshita?"
She already knew from Guangyou that the two had never met.
What she wants to know now is whether Professor Agasa has gone to look for him.
