It was obvious from her tone that she was overjoyed.
But this fleeting joy was short-lived.
The next moment, she turned her head again and looked deeply at Professor Agasa, as if saying goodbye in silence.
"I think he probably forgot about it long ago."
After she finished speaking, she looked away and pulled her hat down.
The brim of her hat obscured her facial expression.
"Billy, I'm so sorry," Fusae said apologetically.
She said:
“You’re just a friend of my mother’s remarried partner, yet I trouble you to come and do this silly thing with me every ten years.”
Don't say that.
The man called Billy shook his head, unconcerned.
Thinking of his wife at home, he said with a smile:
"My wife will definitely be angry if I refuse."
"Who told her to be such a loyal supporter of the 'Fusaie' brand?"
"I'm still very embarrassed."
"but..."
Taking a breath to calm herself, Fusae's voice trembled slightly, but quickly returned to normal.
She pulled her hat brim down a little further and said:
"However, this matter ends here today."
"We should go too."
After saying those words, Fusae felt a sudden emptiness in her heart.
She wanted to look back one more time at the person who was the first besides her parents to compliment her blonde hair and to help her overcome her psychological trauma.
She wanted to get out of the car and ask him face to face:
"Are you really married?"
But reason stopped her.
She lowered her head, gripped the edge of the chair tightly, and pursed her lips, which were painted with pink lipstick.
"Are you really leaving?" Billy could tell she didn't want to leave at all.
"Let's go." Fusa's answer was just that simple word.
But for her, saying that word was difficult enough.
After ten years of waiting, now that we know Professor Agasa has a family, it's time to put an end to this matter.
"Aren't you going to ask...?"
Before he could finish speaking, Fusa interrupted him directly:
"Stop talking, let's go."
She worried that if she continued talking, she would break down in tears, just like she did back then.
Back then, she worried that her hair color, which was different from those around her, would cause her to lose Professor Agasa as a friend.
This time, in order not to disrupt Professor Agasa's current happy life, she has to leave.
Even if her inner answer is the opposite of her current decision.
"Alright." Seeing that she had made up her mind, Billy didn't try to persuade her any further.
He started the car and drove along the road.
But he stopped before he had gone very far.
"What's wrong?" Fusae asked.
“I just remembered that the kid named Guangyou gave me a note before.”
"He asked me to give this to you when I leave."
As he spoke, Billy took a slip of paper out of his pocket and handed it over.
The note was given to him when I went to the convenience store to buy something.
He had kept it in his pocket and almost forgot about it.
Fusa took the note and opened it.
The note had a line of text on it:
"Some things cannot be judged by appearances alone."
“Kuyou, this is…” Fusae suddenly thought of a possibility.
She didn't know what Guangyou was trying to tell her when he wrote those words.
But whatever Guangyou was thinking back then, her thoughts now are:
"Is he not married yet?"
She turned her head for the third time and looked at Professor Agasa through the window.
At this moment, Professor Agasa was smiling as he spoke these words to Genta and the others.
From a distance, Fusae didn't see the helplessness in Professor Agasa's smile.
After a moment of silence, she ultimately did not push open the door, get out of the car, and confront Professor Agasa.
She said:
"Let's go, Billy."
“Okay.” Billy didn’t try to dissuade him.
The car started again, but Billy deliberately slowed down.
He knew that Fusae didn't want to leave.
I knew that trying to persuade her would definitely fail.
Perhaps we should slow down and let her decide for herself.
Fusae, lost in her memories of the past, was unaware of this.
But just then, a voice suddenly came, waking her up:
"My favorite tree is still the ginkgo!"
These words seemed to transcend time, allowing Fusae to once again experience the feeling she had forty years ago when she heard the words, "But I like it very much!"
She suddenly raised her head, then turned it for the fourth time to look at Professor Agasa through the window.
At this moment, Professor Agasa, with a smile on his face, waved goodbye to her.
There is no helplessness, no regret, only the most sincere feelings and blessings.
Although Professor Agasa's hair on top of his head had disappeared, the rest of his hair had turned white, and he was wearing glasses.
The changes are enormous compared to back then.
But the scene where Professor Agasa picked up the ginkgo leaf from the ground and told her he "liked" it gradually overlapped with the scene that Fusae was seeing at this moment.
Seeing the smile on Professor Agasa's face, Fusae pursed her lips, and tears welled up in her eyes, shimmering in the afterglow of the setting sun.
The dusty postcards reminded Professor Agasa of the past.
Professor Agasa's smile made Fusae feel as if she had returned to that late autumn.
She looked away and lowered her head slightly.
The brim of her hat covered her eyes, but revealed her slightly flushed cheeks.
Although Fusae is nearly fifty years old this year, you can still see the appearance of a young girl experiencing her first love in her.
That makes sense, after all, Fusae has never been in a relationship.
