After realizing what had happened, Miwako gently withdrew her hand. There was still a slight pain in her hand, but in this atmosphere, she seemed not to feel the pain at all.
Her heroic face melted instantly, her eyes became watery, and her cheeks flushed. Takagi, who was opposite her, was in the same state.
Takagi stood frozen in place, a barely noticeable blush rising on his face. He stared at Miwako, who had her back to him, lost in thought.
There was no conversation between the two, but Takagi took the initiative to speak.
The blush on Takagi's face vanished instantly, and she asked in a slightly heavy tone, "Officer Sato, what did you want to say to me earlier?"
“Um…” Miwako pursed her lips, looked down at the ground, hesitated for a while, then suddenly smiled and said in a casual tone, “I was originally going to say that we shouldn’t go on a date.”
Under Takagi's surprised gaze, she continued, "Because I was cursed long ago."
"curse?"
Takagi repeated those two words softly.
"Yes, I think that anyone I consider important will disappear from my life soon."
Miwako then started counting on her fingers: "For example, my dad, my elementary school PE teacher, the president of the baseball club, plus..."
"And he's the same way..."
Takagi noticed the change in Miwako's emotions and felt a pang of bitterness in his heart.
Miwako didn't mention the person's name, perhaps out of consideration for Takagi's feelings. But Takagi already knew the situation, so how could he not know that Miwako was referring to Matsuda Jinpei?
"I really don't want to suffer this pain anymore," Miwako said to Takagi with a forced smile. "So, I think we should just be ordinary colleagues like before."
For some reason, Takagi suddenly reached out and grasped Miwako's slender hand.
Yumi, who was watching intently from a distance, suddenly sensed a murderous intent behind her. Looking back, she saw most of the single police officers in the Metropolitan Police Department glaring at the despicable Takagi Wataru with gritted teeth.
The atmosphere between the two was somewhat subtle. Countless thoughts flashed through Takagi's mind. He had already made up his mind, but for some reason, the words that came out of his mouth were the ones he least wanted to say.
"Officer Sato, actually I think so too, hahaha."
Guangyou had already reached into the bag with his other hand, ready to throw a beer at Takagi, hoping to sober him up, so that all his words would have been for nothing.
Miwako felt a sense of loss, but also a bit of relief, and said with a smile, "A boy as good as Officer Takagi will definitely have even cuter girls who like you."
Takagi scratched his head and chuckled awkwardly.
He was forcing a smile, while the group of male police officers in the distance were genuinely laughing.
Yumi gritted her teeth: "That coward Takagi is truly hopeless."
Miwako forced a smile and said to Takagi, "Then I'll be going now."
After saying that, she turned around, lowered her head, and slowly walked away into the distance.
Watching Miwako wave goodbye with her back to him, Takagi regretted saying those words. He suddenly felt that Miwako was walking much slower, and the passage of time seemed to have slowed down as well.
Images flashed before his eyes, the last one settling on Guangyou, who placed his hand on his chest, his eyes serious, and said to him earnestly, "This place will tell you whether you like it or not. If you like it, go. If you don't, then pretend I didn't say anything."
"If you haven't even tried it, how can you say you like it?"
...
Takagi took a few deep breaths, feeling as if something was stuck in his throat, and he reached out to cover his chest.
"If you can't speak, can't you at least move?"
A flame seemed to ignite in Takagi's heart, and he walked toward Miwako, his pace gradually quickening.
He almost ran to Miwako's side, stretched out his hands, and forcefully turned Miwako to face him.
Miwako was a little nervous by the sudden action; it was the first time she had seen Takagi with such a serious expression.
Takagi lowered his head, his chest heaving violently. After a while, his voice sounded almost hoarse: "The cutest girl in my heart is you."
The sound wasn't loud, but it was loud enough for Miwako, who was standing right in front of him, and the person spying behind him to hear it clearly.
"Takagi..."
Miwako didn't even notice the change in how she addressed Takagi.
"He's right. I tried asking my heart, and my heart tells me that I love you, Miwako..."
Takagi grew bolder. "I don't know the specifics of your relationship with that person, and I don't want to know. I just want you to know that I am who I am, and I am different from him."
Takagi continued, "Today's disguise was an accident, so I apologize in advance."
Miwako shook her head and said softly, "I'm the one who should apologize. I was too impulsive. If it weren't for that child, I probably would have hit you in the face."
Takagi and Miwako looked at each other, and he said seriously, "As for the curse you mentioned, I am not afraid. Even if it really exists, I will have no regrets."
Takagi hesitated for a moment, as if making up her mind, and said, "Miwako, you...you can..."
"I'll think about it. I'll be going now."
Before he could finish speaking, Miwako's face was already flushed pink. She quickly broke free from his grasp and ran away into the distance.
Gao Mu stood there, hesitating for a moment. The evening breeze seemed to extinguish some of the fire in his heart. He looked at his hands and recalled everything that had just happened. He felt his legs go weak.
