Chapter 40 The Mysterious First Wife

"Kuangyou, it's time to wake up!"

Guangyou rubbed his sleepy eyes, glanced out the car window, yawned, and got out of the professor's yellow Beetle.

"I really admire how energetic these kids are."

As soon as Kōyū got out of the car, he heard Ai say this, and immediately replied, "Well~ it's not easy to come out camping, so cheer up!"

Looking at Professor Agasa beside him, Kōyū seemed to remember him and asked hesitantly, "Professor, did you... did you bring a tent?"

Professor Agasa rummaged through the car's storage compartment, cold sweat beading on his forehead. He scratched his head and said, "I think I really did forget to bring it."

Guangyou slapped his forehead: "Damn it!"

The remaining three members of the detective team were extremely disappointed to hear that they hadn't brought a tent. There was nothing they could do; it was already quite late, and they could only hope that they could return to Beika Town before nightfall.

Conan glanced at the professor driving the car ahead, his dead fish eyes narrowing: "Looks like we'll have to camp out in the wilderness in this car tonight!"

Aside from his deductive reasoning skills, Conan is basically a master of face-slapping. Just after saying there was no one around, a blue castle came into everyone's view.

Seeing Conan's embarrassed expression, Kōyū chuckled. Suddenly remembering something, he took something out of his backpack and held it up to Ai Haibara's side: "Ai, try this! It's your favorite flavor!"

Ai turned to look at Kouyu, who was holding a sandwich in front of her. Seeing the expectant look in his eyes, she seemed to recall the scene at the park a few days ago. Her face flushed slightly, though it wasn't very noticeable in the sunlight.

Ai took the sandwich and ate it very ladylike. Looking at Kousuke, who was overjoyed at receiving a compliment, Ai was filled with thoughts. She sighed, lowered her head, and ate the sandwich in small bites.

The group arrived in front of the castle, and the three kids were full of admiration as they looked at the magnificent castle.

Yuan Tai has always been a reckless person. He ran straight to the castle gate without knocking and prepared to climb over the gate to enter the castle.

As soon as he landed, Genta was picked up by a gardener: "Hey, where did you come from, you brat? How dare you barge in like this?"

As the only one among the group who could be clearly an adult by his appearance, Professor Agasa said somewhat embarrassedly, "Actually, we're not bad people, it's just that when we saw such a magnificent castle, we..."

Only then did the gardener notice the others: "Who are you all?"

Professor Agasa scratched his head: "If it's alright, could we have a tour?"

Just as the gardener was about to tell Professor Agasa and his group to get lost, a voice from afar made him stop.

Who are these people?

The gardener turned around and immediately said respectfully, "Sir, these people have come here without permission, and we don't know what they want."

Pointing to Professor Agasa outside the door, he said, "Especially this old man with the stupid look on his face."

You might say Professor Agasa is fat, but to say that Professor Agasa, as a scientist, is stupid is unacceptable: "What do you mean by looking stupid?! I'm a scientist, after all!"

The man addressed as "Master" by the gardener showed a slight change in expression upon hearing this: "A scientist? In that case, you must be quite intelligent."

Upon hearing that they were scientists, the old man's attitude towards everyone suddenly changed from unfamiliar to warm: "Then please come in! Would you like to stay here for the night? There aren't many people around here."

This was exactly what Professor Agasa wanted to hear. He was still wondering how to bring it up when the castle owner spoke up first, so Professor Agasa naturally agreed.

Through the gardener's introduction, everyone learned that the gardener's name was Katsuo Tabata and the master's name was Mitsuru Mamiya.

Walking in the courtyard, Ayumi looked at the horse statue and exclaimed, "There are horses here!"

Genta looked at the black horse statue on the other side and exclaimed in surprise, "There are black ones too!"

Conan's deadpan expression had been fixed for a moment: "This is a chess piece."

Conan pointed to the grass: "Even the lawn has been turned into a chessboard."

Professor Agasa looked at Katsuo Tabata and asked, "Is there anyone here who likes chess?"

Gardener Katsuo Tabata shook his head: "Who knows? I just did it according to the old master's instructions."

"The old master? That..."

Katsuo Tabata nodded: "That man just now was Mr. Man, our wife's second husband, and our wife also perished in the fire four years ago..."

"Fire?"

Katsuo Tabata pointed to a charred stone tower in the distance: "Look, there's a charred stone tower over there. That place used to be the wife's bedroom. That year, the wife returned to this stone tower for the first wife's birthday. Before dawn that day, the flames engulfed the stone tower, and... sigh."

Katsuo Tabata sighed: "It wasn't just the wife, but also her friends from back then, as well as the steward and servants who served the first wife. More than a dozen people died inside. The only survivors were a servant like me who had just arrived, the first wife who happened to have a cold and was sleeping elsewhere, and finally, Master Man who had just arrived at the time."

Katsuo Tabata pointed to a man kneeling on the ground beside her: "That is the only son of Madam and the former Master Teisho, Prince Mamiya."

Looking at the nobleman touching the chess pieces, Katsuo Tabata said, "Young Master Nobleman was sent abroad to study when he was young. 23 days before the fire, Young Master Nobleman came back once. However, because of his studies abroad, that was the first time I saw Young Master Nobleman. It was also the first time I met Master Aman."
