Chapter 424 Who won, who lost?

"I smiled smugly~"

Kwang-woo strode toward the office with an air of indifference, as if he didn't recognize anyone.

The scene of Ai carrying his clothes into the room was still vivid in his mind, making him happy and feeling that their relationship had taken another step forward.

On the way back, Guangyou felt that the stars were a bit brighter, and even the azure night sky seemed much clearer because of their presence.

Even the stray cats that occasionally dart by seem much cuter. If he had cat food on hand, Guangyou might have squatted down to feed them some.

The sounds of a couple arguing over trivial matters coming from a house on the street didn't sound as unpleasant as usual; instead, they sounded somewhat warm.

Guangyou doesn't want the two of them to argue like this in the future, as it could easily damage their relationship, which would be a loss.

A little quarrel, no, it would be more accurate to say a bickering.

A little playful banter in life, without arguing or fighting, can lead to a good laugh and even strengthen a relationship.

But even a big argument leaves a crack in the relationship, no matter how insignificant that crack may be.

Humming a song, I returned to the office. Ran was washing dishes in the kitchen, Uncle Mori was watching a mystery show on TV, and Conan was sitting on the sofa playing chess by himself.

"You're back just in time. Want to play chess?"

Conan looked up at Kōyū and gestured to the seat opposite him on the sofa.

"OK."

Kōyū sniffed and sat down on the sofa to help Conan set up the chessboard.

Since I have nothing else to do, playing chess with someone to exercise my mind is a good idea.

After setting up the chess pieces, Conan looked at their positions, raised his head, and asked, "You're red, I'm black?"

"Suit yourself." Guangyou waved his hand and urged, "I'll let you go first."

Conan didn't deny it. After thinking for a moment, he reached out and moved Bing forward a step, then asked, "I forgot to ask before, did you do that?"

Guangyou looked at the chessboard, reached out and placed a piece, hesitated for a moment before nodding: "I did it."

Upon hearing this, Conan's eyes dimmed. After making his next move, he asked, puzzled, "Why?"

Guangyou's tone was calm, his eyes were filled with determination, and the force with which he placed the chess piece seemed to increase: "Whether intentional or unintentional, he should never have tried to put my family in danger."

After hearing the answer, Conan's hand, which was about to place a piece, suddenly froze in mid-air.

He was referring to...family?

These two seemingly light words now felt as heavy as a thousand pounds pressing down on Conan's heart, and that sentence kept lingering in his mind.

Conan hadn't misheard; he remembered all the care that Ran, Uncle Mori, Eri, and Kōyū had given him.

He was staying here temporarily, so he was an outsider, but the Mori family didn't treat him like one.

I'll bring him some good food, and I'll remember him when I have something fun to do.

Professor Agasa is like a doting grandfather who goes camping every now and then. He could have used that time to invent gadgets to make money.

Not to mention Ai, who will become family in the future.

In Guangyou's heart, although there may be no blood relation, they are no different from family.

After a long pause, or perhaps in an instant, Conan's myriad thoughts turned into a sigh, and he placed the chess piece he thought he hadn't placed in a long time: "What you shouldn't have done, he will be punished."

Guangyou nodded, neither objecting nor agreeing, and silently made his next move.

After pondering for a moment while looking at the chessboard, Conan placed a piece, his words filled with regret: "You really shouldn't have done that. Our duty is to catch the criminal, and he will naturally be judged by the law."

He didn't want Guangyou to continue doing such things; he wanted to try to change Guangyou's mind.

However, Guangyou's mind was not so easily changed.

After placing a piece, Kōyū looked up, his expression calm: "You're a detective, I'm not. I have my own code of conduct and bottom line. If he wants to bomb Tokyo Tower, I don't care."

“Even if he harmed 12 million people in Tokyo, I would not be moved at all. At most, I would catch him, cripple him, and hand him over to the Metropolitan Police Department.”

“But now he’s trying to put people who are family members in danger, and that’s something I can’t tolerate.”

"You can call me cold-blooded, but that's just who I am."

Conan remained silent, unsure how to respond to these words.

After a moment, a different meaning appeared in his eyes, and he said, "But you didn't have to kill him."

"I heard the scene was terrible."

"It looks terrible, but it's not bad for him. He was smiling in the last second, and he will always have that smile on his face. It seems like he got off easy."

With a blank expression, Guangyou placed his last piece, then propped himself up on his knees and walked upstairs, leaving behind only a soft, lingering voice: "Checkmate, I win."

The two deliberately kept their voices down, so Xiaolan and Uncle Mori naturally didn't hear them.

Conan stared at the finished game, shook his head, and murmured, "You won the game, but you were still wrong, terribly wrong."

"You're wrong..."

...

His murmurs went unheard by Guangyou, who was sitting at his desk. If he had heard them, he would have simply curled his lip in disdain.

As for regret?

Well, everyone has their own values, and you can't force them to have them.

If the murderer really only wanted to harm those twelve million people, he wouldn't really feel anything.
