Guangyou seemed to read something in her eyes, pointed to the moon that was silently radiating its light in the sky, and smiled brightly: "Do you see that bright moon?"
Ai nodded, puzzled, looking into Kousuke's starry eyes, seemingly lost in thought.
Guangyou took a deep breath: "The moon needs the sun's light to shine. Without the sun, the moon is just an ordinary satellite."
Ai knew this, of course, but she didn't understand what Kousuke was trying to say.
Kōyū's expression was complex, an expression that shouldn't appear at his age. Looking at the moon in the sky, Kōyū pointed to Ai beside him: "If I am the moon, then you, Ai Haibara, Shiho Miyano, are my sun!"
These words directly revealed Kōyū's attitude towards Ai, and Ai's face flushed slightly.
Guangyou didn't continue, changing the subject instead: "Do you know what it means to be called a person?"
Ai's face was still flushed with embarrassment. She nodded and then shook her head. Kōyū smiled and said, "The difference between humans and animals, besides intelligence and obvious physical characteristics, lies in their hearts."
"Heart?"
Guangyou nodded: "To use the starry sky as an analogy, some people have a starry sky in their hearts. People around such people feel very happy and think that such people have a great sense of humor and can bring laughter to others."
"Some people suffer setbacks, and their hearts are like the starry sky right now, where it's hard to see the stars. But no matter what, there is always a bright moon in their hearts that gives them hope."
"Those who see no light in the starry sky of their hearts have two possibilities: either they will commit suicide, or they will become like animals."
"Many animals survive purely on instinct, without any thought." Although Guangyou's words were not fully explained, they were very easy to understand.
The blush on Ai's face had long since faded, and she nodded: "That's a very vivid description."
"What I mean by saying this is that I know what you've been through, and I completely understand. I just hope you won't think about any other messy things. I'll take care of everything." Kōyū was afraid that Ai would have the same thoughts as in the original story, that she felt like she was superfluous.
Kōyū's words touched Ai deeply. After her parents passed away when she was young, only her older sister could give her a little warmth. Apart from that, there were only cold, lifeless machines.
Xiao Ai nodded heavily.
Kōyū took two lollipops out of his pocket, tore off the wrappers, and handed them to Ai.
Ai, holding a lollipop, asked curiously, "How many do you have left?"
Guangyou patted his pockets and said regretfully, "It's all gone."
Ai put the lollipop in her mouth: "Mmm, it's blueberry flavored."
On the horizon, a sliver of the sun peeked out, turning the entire sky orange. Ai turned to look at Kōyū, who was leaning against the railing with his eyes closed, seemingly asleep.
Turning her head to look at the beautiful scenery before her, Ai, chewing on a lollipop, smiled in the sunlight with an exceptionally beautiful expression: "Am I... the sun?"
