Chapter 960 Deserved to Die

"There is always something hateful about a pitiful person."

This proverb is widely circulated.

The original meaning was:

The misfortunes of a seemingly pitiful person in reality must be the result of past mistakes; they are only reaping what they sow.

Simply put, it's because this person did something hateful and had something hateful about them that they later became pitiful, but in reality, it was their own fault.

However, once it spreads widely, it is easy for errors to occur.

Some people who are unwilling to think and can hear the sound of waves just by shaking their heads have misinterpreted the meaning of this sentence as:

“There must be something hateful about a pitiful person; their current pitifulness is all their own fault.”

They didn't realize that while this proverb has some applicability, it lacks universality.

It is not advisable to generalize and condemn everyone.

For example:

A beggar, barely clothed, tearfully begged for money, saying that his wife and children had abandoned him and left him without a care.

Is this beggar pitiful?

They look quite pitiful.

But if this beggar starts cursing when others don't give him money...

Once he got the money, he treated it as gambling money, ready to gamble and have some fun, to see if he could turn his fortunes around and win back all the money he had lost before.

This is the essence of the saying that even the most pitiful person has something hateful about them.

One person lost both parents at a young age and suffered bullying and contempt from others.

He's pitiful, but there's nothing hateful about him.

Getting back to the main point, the condition for this statement to hold true is that the pitiful aspect is based on the hateful aspect; the reverse is not true.

It's not that Shi Kuanren isn't hateful.

It's just that his pitiful state wasn't caused by himself.

The phrase that best applies to Hiroto Akashi is the second half of the saying, "Every pitiful person has something hateful about them."

"Those who are hateful must have suffered pitiful misfortunes."

Of course, this statement is somewhat absolute.

Not every hateful person has a tragic fate; some people are simply hateful.

But for Hiroto Akashi, this statement certainly applies.

He personally murdered his adoptive father who had raised him for many years, so he must be hateful, and that's what Conan thinks.

However, Conan had to admit that Akashi Ichio had caused Akashi Hiroto psychological harm, and it was very serious.

It's hateful, but also pathetic.

He is sensible, filial, devoted, kind, and always willing to help others...

But he encountered Akashi Takeo, who treated his adopted son like a toy.

Even though his daughter-in-law's accidental death was due to his own fault, he felt no remorse and even said those chilling things.

What about "finding a more durable toy next time, one that's as sturdy and obedient as my son"...?

He was still laughing after he finished speaking.

They simply don't treat people like human beings.

What wrong did Akashi Hiroto do in his treatment of Akashi Nobuo?

He was dutiful and responsible, even more so than some of his own children.

What's so hateful about it?

Of course, his murder of Akashi Takao was indeed hateful, and Conan has always thought so.

But Akashi Hiroto was very clear that he was pitiful and pathetic first, and then hateful.

Seeing things clearly naturally leads to deeper feelings. Conan looked at Hiroto Akashi, who was trying hard to appear calm, and couldn't help but sigh softly.

If he had experienced something like that, although he wouldn't make the same choice as Hiroto Akashi, he would still inevitably feel heartbroken.

The somber atmosphere plunged everyone in the living room into silence once again, with only the wall clock continuing its incessant ticking.

No one offered words of comfort, nor did anyone need to.

However, remaining silent wasn't a solution, so Hiroto Akashi broke the silence and said:

"To be honest, before I heard what my father said, I always believed it..."

"I believe that the reason my father makes some unreasonable demands on me is evidence that he treats me like his own son, without any reservations, and not as an outsider."

He didn't have to say these things.

But he thought that since he had already said so much, a few more words wouldn't make a difference.

And after saying all this, he felt much more relaxed.

He had kept these words to himself for three whole years.

He had no one to confide in, and could only take out a photo of himself and his deceased wife when he was alone, telling her everything.

Sometimes, as I'm talking, my eyes will suddenly well up with tears, my nose will sting, and my vision will blur.

But after he finishes telling his story, he has to put on a "mask" and pretend that he doesn't know the truth.

Now that his father has been killed by his own hands, Akashi Hiroto no longer needs to wear that "mask".

Before, he could only confide in the photos for a while, but now that he has an audience, he can't stop talking once he starts.

It was as if he wanted to say all the things he had kept in his heart for the past few years all at once.

He picked up his cup, took a sip of water, and then said:

“We built a house in these deep mountains, and the three of us lived together in this place. It was also because my father said he wanted to live a life away from the world.”

He looked up at the light cord in the living room.

To be precise, it's the fishing knot on the light cord.

Under the dazzling lights, Hiroto Akashi seemed to see a phantom woman's figure.

The figure seemed to be smiling at him.

He subconsciously reached out and grabbed at the figure.

But he caught nothing.

At this point, Hiroto Akashi came to his senses.

Without pausing for long, he looked at the light cord with a reminiscing expression and continued:

"Of course, extending the light cord was also my father's idea."

"He suddenly extended the light cord in his room a little, and then told my wife and me that we should do the same in the other rooms."
