Chapter 968 Rescuing the Car

By the time everyone else had woken up, washed up, and eaten breakfast, the sun had fully risen and was high in the sky, radiating a warm glow.

Even with the sunlight shining on him, Uncle Mori didn't feel any warmth at all.

He was a little troubled.

The reason he was upset was that his rented car had been washed away by the river.

If he can't drive the car back, it will be difficult for him to explain to the rental shop.

Whether the car is broken or not is another matter; the main problem is that he doesn't even know where the car is now.

"Why does my rented car always have accidents?" Uncle Maoli thought for a long time but still couldn't figure it out. "Busts, explosions, being swept away by the river..."

"well..."

He was puzzled as to why these things kept happening.

Fortunately, the rented cars were all insured, so as long as it was proven that the cause of the accident was not his fault, the insurance company would cover all the compensation.

Otherwise, the compensation alone would be enough to buy two or three mid-range cars.

Actually, he had been saving up to buy a car recently, but now it seems he should give up on that idea.

If a rented car gets into an accident, it's insured, so he doesn't feel bad at all, since it's someone else's car that got damaged, and he doesn't have to pay for it.

But if his own car gets into an accident, he'll be heartbroken even if it's insured.

After much thought, Uncle Mori decided that renting a car was more convenient. He could rent one whenever he needed it, and if something went wrong, he wouldn't have to worry about it as long as the cause wasn't his fault.

However, he needs to find the car that was swept away first.

If it can still be driven, that would be best. If it can't be driven, he'll find a place to repair it and see if it can be fixed.

If it can't be repaired or the repair cost is too high, he will have no choice but to tell the rental shop the truth.

"Uncle, are we going to look for our luggage later?" Guangyou asked, sitting by the window and enjoying the warm sunshine.

"Of course we'll go." Uncle Maoli couldn't wait to find a car. He checked the time and said, "We'll leave after they've finished packing."

Although this house is unlikely to be inhabited for the next ten years or so, it still needs to be cleaned up.

Of course, they were just tidying up the kitchen they had used.

The task of cleaning up the kitchen was left to Xiaolan and Yuanzi.

The two chatted as they tidied up, discussing whether they slept well the night before, whether they had any nightmares, and what they dreamed about.

This house has been the site of a death, so it can be considered a haunted house.

Moreover, the two were the ones who discovered the body.

With the lights off and their eyes closed, the two couldn't help but recall the moment they pushed open the door.

However, since the two of them slept together, they could chat, and eventually fall asleep.

As for Conan, his throat wasn't better and he couldn't speak yet, but he didn't have anyone to talk to, so it didn't matter.

He was sitting at the table, engrossed in reading a book he had taken from the living room bookshelf.

He had brought several mystery novels with him on this vacation, but unexpectedly, his luggage and car were washed away by the river.

Soon, Xiaolan and Yuanzi finished cleaning up the kitchen.

After confirming that nothing had been left behind, the group left the house.

Their goal is clear: to find the car that was swept away by the river yesterday.

The search strategy is already in place:

Walk downstream along the same river as yesterday.

Given the car's weight, they should find it somewhere downstream if nothing unexpected happens.

"I hope the car isn't broken." Uncle Mori walked in front, thinking that if the car wasn't broken, he could save some money to buy beer.

"Uncle, do you know which way to go?" Sonoko looked around at the trees and asked with some doubt, "Aren't we going to get lost again?"

There are no road signs in the forest, and the surrounding environment is mostly the same, making it easy for inexperienced people to get lost.

They had gotten lost before, so Sonoko was a little worried.

"How could that be! We definitely won't get lost this time." Uncle Mori said this, but he wasn't sure himself.

He is now simply following his memory, walking in the direction he came from.

But whether he could ultimately find that river, he didn't actually know.

"Looks like being bad at directions is hereditary..." Guangyou teased, glancing at Xiaolan, who was also bad at directions.

He wasn't worried about getting lost.

Even without a compass, he could determine direction by the information left by nature.

Moreover, they are heading in the right direction and have not gotten lost.

So he didn't say anything.

After walking for nearly forty minutes, Guangyou suddenly heard some noise and said, "I think I hear the sound of water."

His words made everyone stop in their tracks.

After it quieted down, the sound of water became even more noticeable.

"Then let's hurry up." Uncle Mori wanted to find the car as soon as possible, so he quickened his pace and walked towards the direction from which the sound of water was coming.

"I don't know if it will still be open."

The river is much calmer than yesterday. At this current speed and flow rate, it probably wouldn't even wash away a person, let alone a heavier vehicle.

Upon arriving at the riverbank, Guangyou first observed the surroundings to see if this was the spot where they had been fishing the day before.

After his gaze fell on a rock on the shore, Guangyou realized that they had been fishing in this spot yesterday.

He saw this rock yesterday when he went to rescue Conan.

It is recognizable because of its unique shape.

The next step is to walk along the riverbank downstream.

Unlike Guangyou, the others were more concerned about the car. As soon as they arrived at the riverbank, Uncle Maoli called everyone to walk downstream.

After walking along the riverbank for nearly twenty minutes, a car parked in the middle of the river came into view.
