Side Story (5): Message Left Thirteen Years Ago

"Organize the book information here like this."

"I really miss those days!"

"Upright? Library committee member? Computer?"

It was as if a switch had been flipped; Guangyou felt he had found the right approach.

To verify this, as soon as Kobayashi Sumiko finished reminiscing and got up from her chair, Kōyū glanced at the keyboard.

After a moment's thought, he couldn't help but laugh out loud.

"What's wrong?" Ai asked curiously. "Is there any progress?"

“Let’s go, I’ll take you to get the time capsule.” Kwang-woo raised an eyebrow at her, without saying where.

"Kuangyou, do you know where it is?"

Just now, Kobayashi Sumiko overheard Kōsuke's words and subconsciously asked the question.

"Okay, let's go." Guangyou didn't intend to hide it from them, and after saying that, he simply led the way.

Led by Guangyou, the group arrived at the meeting place for today—the animal shed.

"Here?" The group was somewhat surprised.

"Wait me a moment."

After saying that, Guangyou went into the animal shed.

Less than two minutes later, he came out of there carrying a package.

"It's really here?" The group was even more surprised.

"It's stuck to the ceiling of the animal shed; she even made a hidden compartment to cover it up," Guangyou told the others.

He showed one side of the package to the group and said:

"A piece of paper was also pasted on it to prevent it from falling suddenly."

The contents of the paper were roughly: This is a time capsule for sixth grade, class A. If anyone finds it, please give it to the teacher.

After saying this, the others couldn't wait any longer.

"That would be wonderful if we found it." Yanagimachi Yue's expression changed slightly, but he pretended to be calm and said, "How about I take mine first?"

Noticing his unusual behavior, Guangyou raised an eyebrow and said:

"I think we should wait for everyone else."

The other two were also saying:

"I think it wouldn't be bad to take ours first."

The words were fine, and taking them was fine too, but the three of them looked obviously wrong; something was definitely wrong.

Not to mention Mitsuyu, even Kobayashi Sumiko noticed that something was off about the three of them. She asked:

"I have a feeling that the three of you seem to have something on your mind."

"How is that possible?"

"That's not true."

"Ms. Kobayashi, you're mistaken."

The three shook their heads in denial, and what they said was almost identical.

After speaking, the three of them exchanged glances.

In the end, the two grown men remained silent. Ichihashi Seiko sighed and said:

"Once during a Chinese exam, Mingmei sat in front of me. I cheated by peeking at her answers, and as a result, we were both called out by the teacher..."

One person spoke up and confessed, while the other two hesitated for a moment before deciding to tell the truth.

“Actually, my painting shouldn’t have won the award,” Murata Takumi explained. “If Miyano painted a similar one in the same place, hers is clearly better than mine.”

As for me...

When he confessed, Yanagimachi Gaku's face showed panic. He lowered his head and said:

"The fire in the music classroom was caused when I and some other kids from the neighborhood sneaked into the school to play with fireworks."

"That incident was discovered by Miyano, who happened to come to the school that day."

"I think the fire in the music classroom was caused by our failure to clean up properly before we left."

“I’m terrified she’ll tell everyone about this.”

"The active-duty firefighter was previously an arsonist..."

"How ironic."

After hearing the three men's confessions, Kwang-woo couldn't help but scoff and say:

"Aside from the fire being quite serious, what other things are really serious?"

"Who hasn't made some mistakes when they were young?"

"Besides, how could someone as kind, gentle, and popular as Akemi in the whole class leave behind such a message?"

"What if?" Yanagimachi Yue was still a little worried.

"There's no 'what if,' she's not that kind of person."

As he spoke, Kōyū took out Akemi's message card and showed it to everyone:

“Mingmei’s message card is written on the back of the group photo.”

Everyone could see clearly that what was written on the back of the group photo was not anyone's secret, but rather:

"I wish everyone's dreams could come true!"

"6th Year, Class A, Miyano Akemi"

The three of them couldn't help but feel ashamed.

"Oh, right," Kobayashi Sumiko suddenly remembered something and said, "Actually, that fire wasn't caused by your failure to clean up."

Upon hearing this, Yanagimachi Gaku raised his head, which had been lowered in shame, and asked:

What could be the reason?

"I remember it was caused by an accident when the air conditioner in the music room was too old and leaked electricity, right?"

Ai had some recollection of this matter.

“Yes.” Guangyou also knew about this.

The day before the holiday, teachers will remind students to pay attention to safety during the holiday.

This incident was used as a negative example.

“On graduation day, I remember her telling me to ‘have courage.’” Yanagimachi Yue still had a question in his mind: “If it weren’t for the fire, what did that sentence mean?”

"They probably want you to stay away from those kids," Guangyou guessed.

"I wish it to be so." Yanagimachi Gaku chuckled self-deprecatingly.

With their worries gone, the other two recalled some details from that time.

Recalling the details of that time, Seiko Ichihashi said:

"Looking back, after that, Mingmei often invited me to the library to study together."

"My grades only started to improve after that."
