"Mm." Chen Feng pulled out a chair and sat down opposite her.
This was the first time Chen Feng had seen Xia Yingying without makeup. She was still as beautiful as ever, but she no longer had that powerful aura; instead, she had gained a touch of innocence.
"Did I disturb your sleep?" Chen Feng asked with a smile.
"No." Xia Yingying shook her head and said softly, looking at the pastries on the table.
"Eat up." Chen Feng noticed that she kept looking at the snacks and gently pushed them forward.
Xia Yingying didn't make a move, but changed the subject. She was just a little afraid to look Chen Feng in the eye, so she kept staring at the snacks.
"Will the harvest there be acceptable?"
“Yes, the harvest was quite good, but the cargo was really deep. I hired an excavator, and my friend and I have been digging there.” Chen Feng told Xia Yingying about his experience a while ago.
"As long as there's stock, it seems he's telling the truth." Xia Yingying nodded.
"It's true, but there's no one there. We ate canned food every day, and my friend got tired of it and thought it would be great to have some stir-fried vegetables."
Thinking of Lin Nian, Chen Feng couldn't help but laugh. At first, the kid was overjoyed to learn that he could eat canned food every day, but in the end, he got tired of it too.
"There's no one around there, it's a no-man's land, there's nothing we can do."
"When are you planning to leave this time?" Xia Yingying asked, her eyes lowered.
"Tomorrow, I'm going back to that place with my friend. This time, we're planning to work there for a whole month. We won't go home until we finish," Chen Feng said, revealing his plans.
Hearing that Chen Feng would be leaving tomorrow, Xia Yingying remained calm and got up to boil a kettle of water.
Chen Feng was somewhat surprised by Xia Yingying's actions. Wasn't she supposed to leave after saying a few words? Why was she boiling water?
While waiting for the water to boil, Xia Yingying took a teacup and put some tea leaves in it.
"Is this a final pot of tea to send me off before I leave? Why is it so bleak?"
Chen Feng took the teacup and joked.
"I guess so. After you leave this time, I'm afraid you'll never come back," Xia Yingying said calmly, holding a water bottle in her hand and looking into Chen Feng's eyes.
These words silenced Chen Feng. He had indeed planned to do so before, but if he were to say now that he would never come again, wouldn't that seem a bit inappropriate?
"Not necessarily, what if he comes back someday?" Chen Feng replied vaguely.
"Why come back? I've already repaid all the favors, and there's nothing here that you want. There's no need to come back."
Xia Yingying poured him some water, then sat back down, holding her own teacup and unconsciously twirling around.
"What if I just want to come back and see you?" Chen Feng said with a carefree laugh.
"I?"
Xia Yingying raised her head, her eyes filled with self-mockery, her smile tinged with sarcasm.
"What's so interesting about a whore whose reputation is like a rat in the street?"
"Don't say that. Nobody knows what you've been through. Everyone has things they have to do in life."
Chen Feng felt inexplicably awkward upon hearing her words.
Shouldn't a woman who's only after money be smug and mocking others right now?
Why would she react like that?
"There was no reason I had no choice. I married him for his money. If I hadn't married him, how could I live in a big villa and drive a Porsche?"
"What a wonderful life this is! It's the kind of life that so many people envy."
Xia Yingying leaned back in her chair, staring blankly at the magnificent chandelier on the ceiling.
"Someone as frank as you is indeed sincere," Chen Feng said half-jokingly.
"Are you serious? You can't believe you're praising someone like that?" Xia Yingying couldn't hold back any longer and looked at Chen Feng with a laugh.
"There's no exaggeration here. These days, there aren't many people as honest as you. Who dares to openly reveal their desires? Aren't they all just wearing a noble cloak?"
Chen Feng shrugged and took a sip of tea.
Xia Yingying pursed her lips, hesitated for a moment, and then said, "The outer perimeter of this gold mine is an area that has not yet been developed."
"Initially, after the exploration, he felt that it was just like the no-man's land, a useless place, so he didn't continue to develop it, but just cleaned up the most valuable parts."
"Of course, I think there are definitely more goods in the no man's land. If you've searched the no man's land and have nowhere else to go, you can try using an excavator here."
Even Xia Yingying herself didn't know why she told him this, since the harvest in the no-man's land was clearly greater than here.
But I still brought it up, as if I was secretly hoping for something.
"There are some here too, is it on the outermost edge?" Chen Feng asked in surprise.
He thought the area had been completely exploited long ago, but he was surprised to find that there was still some left.
Yes, look, this is it.
Xia Yingying opened her phone, brought up the map, turned the phone horizontally, and pointed it out to him.
"This whole area is like this."
Chen Feng leaned closer and stared at Xia Yingying's phone. The two of them had unknowingly gotten very close, and Chen Feng could even smell the fragrance of Xia Yingying's hair.
However, Chen Feng's attention was focused on his phone at the moment. He was combining the map with the real-world view, trying to figure out exactly where that place was.
"It seems like it's only a dozen kilometers from here to the villa. Should we turn left on the road we came in on?" Chen Feng asked instinctively, turning his head back. Xia Yingying also turned her head.
Their eyes met, the two of them no more than a dozen centimeters apart. Chen Feng could count the number of Xia Yingying's eyelashes and see the panic hidden deep in her eyes.
The air went quiet for a moment, and the two of them pulled back at the same time.
Xia Yingying's eyes darted around, and she casually smoothed her hair and pointed in a direction.
"Yes, that's it, it's very close to here."
"Okay, I'll think about it."
Chen Feng considered it in his mind. Although Xia Yingying said that the harvest here was not as good as in the no-man's land, how would he know if he didn't try? What if there really was something there?
Even if it really doesn't work out, it's not too late to leave on your own. You should always compare and see.
"Hmm." Xia Yingying picked up her teacup, took a sip of tea, and lowered her head without saying anything else.
"Well, if there's nothing else, I'll head out now. You should get some rest." Chen Feng finished his tea in one gulp and stood up to say this.
There's not much else to say, but it would feel a bit awkward to sit any longer.
"Okay." Xia Yingying also stood up, as if to see him off.
After Chen Feng left, Xia Yingying stood up, locked the door, and came back to look at the boxes of pastries.
Carrying the boxes of pastries, Xia Yingying went upstairs.
Back in her big bed, Xia Yingying opened the rainbow cake box, gently forked off a little bit with a fork, and put it in her mouth.
She savored the sweetness of the cake, even though she had actually eaten cakes from this shop a long time ago.
