Chapter 4 Newcomers Join the Team

"By the way, Lao Han, you just said someone in the next village found 20,000 yuan worth of gold?"

The group looked at Old Han, who chuckled and said, "I forgot too. I only heard it from someone else. Who knows what his name is?"

In reality, there's no such thing at all. It was all made up by Lao Han to exaggerate the quality of his tools.

If someone really found 20,000 yuan worth of gold, the nearby villages would have been in an uproar long ago, and there would be no need for Old Han to spread the word.

Let alone finding 20,000 yuan worth of gold, even if someone finds a few hundred yuan worth of gold, that's enough to make the whole village talk about for half a month.

When they got home, Liu Ping was cooking. She looked back at the things Chen Feng had brought back with curiosity.

After she finished cooking the vegetables in the pot, she walked over and looked at the metal detector, saying, "This is the gold panning thing. How much does it cost?"

"Two thousand six, I bargained down fifty, plus the bag, shovel and stuff, it's two thousand six hundred three in total," Chen Feng said, pointing to the bag on the table.

"This thing is really expensive. It's so big and it costs so much," Liu Ping said, sounding a little pained.

"You can't catch a wolf without risking your cub. I'll go find Brother Zheng after we finish eating."

"Have him take me with him when he goes gold mining tomorrow, and also ask them what time they start, and if there's anything else I need to be careful about." Chen Feng picked up a large cup of boiling water that was cooling on the table and poured some into his own cup.

"Okay, find out what happened and learn from them," Liu Ping instructed.

"Okay." Chen Feng picked up his cup and drank it all in one gulp, ready to start the meal.

After dinner, Chen Feng went to Zheng Ping's house.

In rural areas, there's no such thing as knocking; you just push the door open and go in.

As soon as I entered, I saw Zheng Ping's wife wiping the floor, while Zheng Ping sat at the dining table smoking. The dishes and chopsticks hadn't been cleared away yet, so he must have just finished eating.

"Xiao Feng, come and sit down." The two were surprised to see Chen Feng. Zheng Ping was taken aback and then invited Chen Feng to sit down.

Zheng Ping is thirty years old this year. He is an honest man and has a strong physique due to years of farm work.

He has been married to his wife for six years. His wife is twenty-eight years old this year, and the two of them are good people.

"Sister-in-law is mopping the floor. Brother Zheng just finished eating?" Chen Feng smiled and sat down opposite Zheng Ping.

"We just finished eating, do you want a bite? It's all leftovers," Brother Zheng said warmly.

"I'm not eating. I just finished eating at home," Chen Feng said, waving his hand.

"Why don't you have a smoke? Here you go." Zheng Ping took out a cigarette from the pack; it was a pack of Ganoderma lucidum cigarettes that cost six yuan a pack.

Chen Feng took the cigarette, and Zheng Ping lit it for him. Chen Feng shielded the flame with his hand and gently touched Zheng Ping's hand as a way of saying thank you.

"Brother Zheng, I also bought a metal detector," Chen Feng said, exhaling a puff of smoke.

"You bought some too? You want to strike it rich too?" Zheng Ping said in surprise.

"Nothing much to do, just browsing around for fun," Chen Feng said with a smile.

"Well, to be honest, I thought it looked pretty good before I started, but after I started, I realized that this thing is purely based on luck."

"After a day's work, all I find are scraps of copper and iron. If I'm lucky, I might find a little silver. But I'll hardly ever find gold, maybe once every ten days or half a month."

"Sometimes we order the wrong thing and end up spending all our travel expenses," Zheng Ping said with a laugh.

"When are you going? Will you come with us in a chartered car?" Zheng Ping asked before Chen Feng could even speak.

"Yeah, I was thinking of coming with you guys to save on travel expenses, and it's good to have someone to look after us," Chen Feng said with a smile.

“Okay, then I’ll count you in tomorrow. The travel fare is fifteen yuan for a round trip, you know that, right?” Zheng Ping flicked his cigarette ash and said.

"Okay, I'll give you the money now. What time are you leaving?" Chen Feng said, reaching for his money, but Zheng Ping stopped him.

"Oh, no rush, we'll talk about it tomorrow. We usually leave at six in the morning and return at six in the evening."

"Remember to eat breakfast, and take some food and water. There's nowhere to eat lunch, so you'll only have dry rations," Zheng Ping thoughtfully reminded him.

"Okay, I'll go to the convenience store to buy something later," Chen Feng nodded.

"You've bought everything, right? Did you forget anything, like a backpack or a shovel?" Zheng Ping asked.

"No, I bought it from Han Jianguo's all-inclusive store, and he even gave me two small bottles as a gift," Chen Feng said.

"Okay, that's fine. I have some other miscellaneous tools here, so you don't need to buy any more. Just use mine if you need anything. After all, we're just starting out, so don't buy too many useless things." Zheng Ping said with deep understanding.

"Alright, then I'll be going now, Brother Zheng. Let's go make a fortune together tomorrow, haha." Chen Feng stood up and laughed.

"Okay, okay, feel free to ask me anything you don't understand," Zheng Ping said as he stood up to see Chen Feng off.

After leaving the house, Chen Feng turned towards the convenience store.

A group of people were playing cards inside the shop, and a few others were watching.

The shop owner, Lu Dahai, was around fifty years old, with a beer belly and a receding hairline. He was very familiar with Chen Feng, since Chen Feng always bought things from his shop.

"You're here! What would you like to buy?" Lu Dahai greeted Chen Feng as he arrived.

"Take two bottles of mineral water, two pieces of bread, two sausages, and a box of white tarts."

"Get me another bottle of Sprite."

Chen Feng glanced at the shelves and said.

"Okay, here you go." Lu Dahai didn't even look at it and just took the item out from behind the bar.

Having run a grocery store for twenty years, he could practically know where everything was with his eyes closed.

Chen Feng picked up the bottle of mineral water, glanced at it, and couldn't help but sigh slightly.

He didn't know which no-name brand it was from; the bottle was so soft it made a creaking sound. He even wondered if it was just locally bottled tap water.

Fortunately, the bread and sausages were decent enough.

But something seemed off about the Sprite, so Chen Feng picked it up to take a look.

Sure enough, you idiot!

"Take it aside, what is this? I want Sprite. Why are you selling all sorts of fake stuff?" Chen Feng said, returning the drink.

"Hehe, they taste pretty much the same. This one is two yuan, Sprite is two yuan and fifty cents. If you want Sprite, I'll switch it for you." Lu Dahai took the Lei Bi back and replaced it with a bottle of proper Sprite for Chen Feng.

Lu Dahai took a plastic bag and helped Chen Feng pack everything, then took a bag of Baitashan cigarettes from the shelf and handed it to him.

"This cigarette isn't fake, is it?" Chen Feng asked, picking up the cigarette and glancing at it.

He wasn't so good at spotting fake cigarettes at a glance; it's just that the things Lu Dahai sold were all counterfeit if you weren't careful.

"Hey, you can't just say that, selling counterfeit cigarettes is illegal." Lu Dahai shook his head quickly upon hearing this, and then, taking advantage of the fact that the onlookers weren't paying attention, he switched Chen Feng's pack with a different one.

Chen Feng, speechless at his actions, pointed at him. Lu Dahai chuckled and mouthed that he had taken the wrong thing.

"Fengzi, I heard you went to Han Jianguo's to buy a metal detector. Are you going to pan for gold too?" Lu Dahai asked, leaning on the counter.
