When Chen Feng arrived home, he stroked his chin and began to ponder in his mind.
Now everyone in the village knows that he spends thousands of dollars at a time, which is not a good thing, as the bigger the tree, the more the wind blows.
Chen Feng understood the principle of not flaunting wealth, but since he had been going out with everyone to sell goods, he couldn't hide it from them no matter what.
So he decided not to hide it anymore. The weather was bad tomorrow, so he figured they wouldn't go gold panning. This was an opportunity for him.
He could easily hire Huang Fei's truck to go to the abandoned mine and pan for gold himself.
When we get back, we'll find an excuse to go to the county town and secretly sell the gold.
When he returned to the village, he said he hadn't found anything and had even spent the money on the trip, which would hopefully dispel some of the villagers' curiosity.
To prove that he is just an ordinary person, and that he was just lucky before, and that he also missed when he tried to make a move.
The more Chen Feng thought about it, the more feasible it seemed, so he decided to do it that way.
He came out to pack his backpack, and Liu Ping casually asked him about it.
"What, going to the abandoned mine tomorrow?"
"Okay, I'll hire Huang Fei's car myself tomorrow," Chen Feng said, tossing a pack of cigarettes into his bag.
"Go by yourself? Why are you going by yourself? Aren't they going?" Liu Ping said in surprise.
“They’re not going; the weather’s bad,” Chen Feng replied.
"You're still going even though the weather's bad?" Liu Ping didn't understand what Chen Feng meant at first.
Chen Feng turned around and explained it to her, and Liu Ping finally understood what was going on.
"That's true. You earn several thousand every time, it's too eye-catching," Liu Ping said with some concern.
"I'll go by myself this time, and nobody will know how much money I make. When I get back, I'll just say I'm from the Air Force, and let those bastards have a good laugh," Chen Feng said with a smile.
He knew that countless people in the village were waiting to see him make a fool of himself. If word got out that he had paid for his own travel expenses, many people would probably gloat.
“It’s possible, but the key is that you’re in the middle of nowhere, with no one to look after you. What if something unexpected happens?” Liu Ping said with some concern.
"It's alright, what could possibly happen? I've been there a few times and I'm already familiar with it, and I even have my phone," Chen Feng reassured her.
After finishing his tidying up, Chen Feng wanted to go to Lu Dahai's place to buy some food in advance, but then he thought he shouldn't do that.
With so many people in the grocery store, if I buy something, they'll definitely know I'm planning to go gold panning tomorrow.
We can't make arrangements with Huang Fei in advance. Once we do, Huang Fei will definitely tell others, and when they hear that I'm going, some people will probably have to come with me even if they don't want to.
You have to go on short notice to prove that it was a spur-of-the-moment decision, not something you were prepared for.
After finalizing the plan, Chen Feng prepared to wash up, but when he turned around, he saw his mother glued his shoes.
The sole of the shoe was split in the middle, and both sides were also torn. Chen Feng glanced at it and couldn't help but ask, "Can it be glued back together?"
"It seems like it won't stick together; the tear is too big." Liu Ping sighed, pressing her hand against the shoe upper, hoping to glue it back together.
After using almost half a tube of glue, the shoes were barely glued together, but Chen Feng estimated they wouldn't last long before cracking again.
"Forget it, I'll go to the county town tomorrow and buy you a pair," Chen Feng said.
Liu Ping knew these shoes wouldn't last long, so she nodded and said, "Then don't buy anything too expensive, just buy something that costs ten or eight yuan. You don't need anything fancy for work."
"Okay, I understand."
Although Chen Feng wanted to say that buying cheap shoes would only lead to them breaking after a month or two, he ultimately didn't say it. He knew that Liu Ping was just worried about the money.
I'll just buy whatever I want and not tell her how much it costs.
After washing up, Chen Feng went to bed on the kang (a heated brick bed). The weather was indeed bad today, and it was especially cool at night; you could hear the wind howling outside.
Chen Feng rolled up the quilt; it was still warmer inside the quilt, and the small kang (heated brick bed) was scalding hot.
On the other side, Old Wang and his wife lay on the kang (a heated brick bed), and a strong wind howled in through the broken window, making the room feel like an ice cellar.
Old Wang's wife pulled the blanket over herself, cursing from the cold: "Damn it, that damned Chen Feng, that bastard!"
"Why did you smash my window for no reason? Damn it, your legs are freezing!"
Old Wang sighed and curled up in bed.
It was so cold inside that he had just lit a whole stove full of wood, which would normally only need to burn half.
This has resulted in the kang (heated brick bed) being scorching hot, making it almost unbearable to lie on, while the outside is still freezing cold, with the cold wind making one's head feel chilly.
"Could you find something to block the window? It's been blowing in all night, what's the point?"
"You'll either be burned to death by the kang (heated brick bed) or blown to death by the wind!" Old Wang's wife kicked him hard and said irritably.
"What can we use to block it? This kid smashed the window to pieces. We don't even have a big enough plastic sheet in the house. I can't even stick it up," Old Wang sighed.
"Then let the wind blow it away, let it blow your mother to death!" Old Wang's wife cursed.
Old Wang rolled up the blanket and said impatiently, "Go to sleep, you won't be cold if you're asleep."
In the end, it's all because of your foul mouth, otherwise we wouldn't be freezing tonight.
However, he only dared to think these words; he didn't dare to say them aloud.
"Damn it, God, couldn't the weather be nice for once? Why did it have to change when I don't have a window?"
Feeling the howling wind, Old Wang's wife couldn't help but shrink back and curse.
"Damn Chen Feng, damn God, they're all bastards!"
Old Wang, who was listening nearby, was extremely annoyed. He wished he could throw a ladle of water in his wife's face and then throw her by the window so that her mouth would freeze together.
That would make the world much quieter.
As if God had heard his wife's words, a sudden gust of wind blew into the house, making a rattling sound.
"Damn, why are you getting more and more excited as you talk about it!" Old Wang's wife said, burying her head deep in the quilt.
"Shut up already, what if it rains later?" Old Wang sighed deeply.
If it rains again with this wind direction, the house will be a waterfall by midnight.
"Then it's my fault, it's all your fault. If you had stopped Chen Feng a little, he could have..."
Old Wang's wife was fine until she started talking, then she got even more excited and started chattering like a machine gun.
Old Wang buried his head in the blankets and ignored her.
Although it's stifling in bed, it's still better than being riddled with machine gun fire.
Finally, after an unknown amount of time, the two of them drifted off to sleep.
By midnight, Old Wang's lower body was sweating profusely from the heat, while his head was shivering from the cold.
He was so sleepy he could barely keep his eyes open. He crawled out of bed, grabbed a cotton hat from the cabinet, put it on his head, and then crawled back into bed.
"What are you doing?" Old Wang's wife asked, her eyes wide open, after he woke her up.
"It's alright, just put on a hat, it'll freeze your head," Old Wang said, then fell asleep again.
