"Red alert for hail. Widespread hail accompanied by thunderstorms is possible within the next three hours. Survivors are advised to plan their travel time appropriately and take protective measures. The base gate will close in 15 minutes and the reopening time will be announced separately."
After reading the message, both of them were obviously relieved.
The hail was a major disaster for those still outside, but inside the base, they didn't need to worry at all.
And it may be a good thing. Hail means rain, which will alleviate the drought on the earth. The base can also take this opportunity to collect some hail to replenish fresh water resources.
He Xiaobei was eager to try, and Qing Yuansi saw her thoughts:
"If you want to watch the fun, you can go to the base gate, or to the helipad, where there are fewer people."
As he said this, he stood up from the sofa and walked outside:
"I'm going back first. Take care of yourself."
He Xiaobei directly took out a coat from the space and put it on, then followed the old man out the door:
"Old man, don't you want to go and take a look?"
Qing Yuansi looked sideways at her. He had no interest at first, but when she mentioned it, he felt that it would be okay to go and take a look.
During the last years of the apocalypse, I was busy in the underground laboratory at first and never paid special attention to observing the situation outside.
The only time I'd see him was when I was at the official base in City S, on the way back from the lab to my apartment. It was even more of a sight when I was at the Kyoto base; I hadn't even left the house once in the past few years.
While others might see the end of the world as a series of natural disasters, he saw it as nothing more than experiments, experiments that would allow humanity to rapidly evolve. Especially after receiving the natural disaster assessment data from his superiors, he now rarely rested.
"Come on, I'll take you to the gate on the other side of the military restricted area. It's safer and there are fewer people there."
He Xiaobei, with a playful smile on his face, took the old man's arm, followed him into the car, and headed towards the military restricted area.
The military restricted area was not too far from He Xiaobei's home, and they arrived there after driving for about 10 minutes.
Because Qing Yuansi was there, and they just wanted to go to the gate and not enter the office building, the guard only checked their identities and sent two soldiers to take them to the gate.
The base's warning was to arrive within 3 hours, but the hail came faster than everyone expected. In less than half an hour, shortly after the gate was closed, a "crackling" sound was heard outside.
He Xiaobei and Qing Yuansi were brought to a small gate, which was only about 2 meters high and 1 meter wide.
The door had three layers, and now only the middle latch was closed. They could see what was happening outside through the gap in the latch.
In fact, the sky was not completely dark during the eternal night. There was at least some light before, but now it is pitch dark.
The frequency of lightning flashing across the sky became more and more frequent, and a strong wind blew up close to the ground, making a whistling sound, and the dust and gravel were blown into the air by the wind.
A gust of wind blew, and He Xiaobei quickly grabbed the old man to prevent him from falling:
"Protect my head. This wind is about to blow my hairline up."
Immediately afterwards, thunder rolled in, one after another exploding in my ears, and hail fell to the ground.
The temperature during the polar night was not high. Egg-sized hailstones fell rapidly and hit the ground without melting, and soon piled up into a layer on the ground.
The two of them were standing a little distance from the door, but they were still covered in dust. Looking at the situation outside, He Xiaobei spoke first:
"Maybe this isn't a natural disaster, but a good thing. At least the land isn't so dry anymore."
Qing Yuansi shook his head silently, his face solemn:
"Our base is inside the mountains, so we're not afraid of hail, but those bases on the ground are likely to suffer heavy casualties this time."
He Xiaobei turned his head and looked at him with a puzzled look:
"Didn't many bases start building underground bases a long time ago?"
"Yes, but apart from the official bases, the people at the private bases didn't build underground bases for the survivors, not even air-raid shelters. They only dug enough underground shelters for themselves."
He Xiaobei looked at Qing Yuansi with bright eyes. This was the difference between the backbone of the country and a petty citizen like her. She only considered herself and the people around her, while the other party would consider the entire country and even all mankind.
Just as she was about to speak, she heard a dull "bang" outside, and the ground shook a little.
