Chapter 1, Third Position

"The exam is over. Please stop answering."

The joint entrance exam for eight schools in City S ended with the cold sound of a bell.

There were no sighs or laughter in Examination Room No. 1 of No. 6 Middle School; everything was calm and ordinary.

Ying Qian stretched and looked around. The first and second seats were occupied by girls, and the third seat was occupied by a boy, whose body was bathed in sunlight.

It was as if this beam of light belonged to him alone, making people unable to resist taking a second look.

His profile was sleek, with frameless glasses perched on his high, straight nose. Everything was just right, but what was unforgettable was the vermilion mole at the corner of his right eye.

Ying Qian rested her chin on her hand, gradually becoming engrossed.

The boy lowered his eyes, his eyelashes dark and thick, his gaze fixed on the watch on his wrist.

Before they could look at the papers more closely, the proctor counted them carefully, waved his hand, and the students leisurely took their scratch paper and stationery and left.

Ying Qian had already packed her things and was the first to rush out the back door. Without thinking, she grabbed the bag leaning against the back door and then quickly ran upstairs to find someone.

The third boy walked to the back door, but his backpack disappeared. He pushed up his glasses and found it at the front door.

I picked up the bag and stuffed the stationery into the front compartment of the outer bag.

"Old Chen—" Wei Ji rushed over from the direction of the restroom, excitedly saying, "Let's go for barbecue tonight!"

Chen Wenzhi didn't react much, his voice flat and indifferent, "I'm not going, I'll go back and do my homework tonight."

Seeing his bitter and resentful look, Wei Ji asked abruptly, "What? Our Chen University top student didn't do well on the exam? No way!"

"Get out." The word was pronounced clearly and distinctly.

He saw Wei Ji come over and zip up his backpack.

"You did very well on the test?" He dodged aside, sneering, "What was your lowest score this time?"

"Tsk." Wei Ji smugly smiled, his eyes half-closed, his right leg involuntarily trembling. "I'm awesome this time! Going back to school next week to check the answers with the teacher?"

Chen Wenzhi slung his backpack over his shoulder, nonchalantly walking towards the school gate, and casually said, "Okay."

"Hey! Chen Wenzhi, what's with your attitude? Tomorrow's the weekend! Aren't you planning to go out and have some fun?" Wei Ji immediately chased after him, "Chen Wenzhi..."

Chen Wenzhi ignored him, muttered "idiot" under his breath, and walked straight ahead.

The long street in front of the school is very crowded, especially at this time, around five or six o'clock, when the stall owners all begin their day's money-making journey.

These delicious and inexpensive roadside stalls are students' favorites.

"Boss, I'll take one of everything you have here!" Wei Ji patted the several hundred silver dollars in his pocket, extremely extravagant.

The owner, busy frying the skewers ordered by others, heard such an unreasonable request, curled his lip, and said in an unknown dialect, "Eh! My goodness, young man, can you finish all of this by yourself?"

"No way!" Seeing the boss's strange expression, Wei Ji quickly pulled Chen Wenzhi to his side. "Him! My brother! He can eat three bowls in one meal!"

Chen Wenzhi's eyes dimmed, and he rolled his eyes at Wei Ji.

Two girls holding grilled sausages nearby set their sights on the two men.

Meng Xuhe nudged Ying Qian's shoulder. "Look, that boy's bag is the same style as yours."

Ying Qian followed the gaze and saw the bag on the boy's shoulder.

She nodded, and as she looked at the boy's appearance, she happened to catch a glimpse of a red birthmark at the corner of his eye...

She kept staring at it, her eyesight wasn't very good, so she squinted to focus.

Chen Wenzhi keenly sensed the intense gaze and subconsciously looked into the crowd. His gaze swept over them, cold and sharp.

Ying Qian knew he had turned around. Pushing through the crowd, her round almond-shaped eyes shone with a deep smile as she raised her hand and waved twice as a greeting.

"..." Chen Wenzhi's ears turned red, and he acted as if nothing had happened, even though he felt at a loss standing next to Wei Ji.

As the setting sun faded on the horizon, the pale orange hue of the sky was gradually obscured by twilight, and night was approaching.

The bus was packed with people.

Ying Qian said, "He and I were in the same exam room."

"That boy?" Meng Xuhe smiled and said, "You two really have an inexplicable connection."

Ying Qian sighed and couldn't help but complain, "You know, this joint entrance exam makes us have to go to different schools, which are way too far from home."

Meng Xuhe was both amused and exasperated. "You'll get used to it. After all, you came here just in time for the exams. It must have been tough for you."

“We basically don’t organize joint entrance exams where I’m from,” Ying Qian recalled of her life in Qincheng. “I really miss my teacher.”

"Since we're here, let's make the best of it."

When Ying Qian was young, her father was transferred to another job, and she studied in Qincheng. She did not return until the second semester of her first year of high school to prepare for the college entrance examination. Due to her parents' divorce, her mother asked Meng Xuhe's family to adopt her.

When I returned to S City, I happened to contract a rather severe viral pneumonia. I only recovered in early September, just in time for the annual joint exam that I took in my second year of high school.
