The sky was pitch black, yet the stars shone brightly, their brilliance undiminished by the moonlight.
The streetlights formed a warm yellow line.
At this time, the school gate was a chaotic mix of people, with the shouts of vendors drowning out the students' wails and complaints, as if trying to cover up everything that was happening on campus.
Ying Qian saw Chen Wenzhi searching for something in the crowd.
She knew they were looking for her, and even if she was jealous, she would never abandon her.
She stood there for a while, her burning gaze seemingly trying to penetrate her tall figure as she strode over.
"Weren't you angry?" she asked in a very soft voice.
Perhaps drowned out by the surrounding noise, Chen Wenzhi held her hand without saying a word.
Leave that noisy place.
The surroundings fell silent, and Chen Wenzhi, unusually, led her along a side path.
It was an alley with no streetlights at night. The area was inhabited by elderly people who had no one to rely on. At this hour, they were all asleep, making the alley even darker, so dark you could hear a pin drop.
Suddenly, the air was filled with the sound of their clothes rubbing together.
Upon reaching a certain point, Chen Wenzhi suddenly stopped.
He led Ying Qian to a corner. Ying Qian paused, and the scene that might happen next flashed through her mind. She took a few steps back in fear, and her wrist was firmly controlled by a force.
"...Chen Wenzhi...don't be impulsive..."
She tried her best to suppress the tremor in her voice, her legs going weak as the familiar breath approached.
His breathing grew closer and more disordered.
"..." Ying Qian swallowed nervously, not daring to say a word.
The next second, she was almost tackled by Chen Wenzhi. Chen Wenzhi hugged her tightly, burying his head in her fair neck and rubbing against her like a child being spoiled.
Ying Qian froze for a few seconds, then placed her hand, which was suspended in mid-air, on his back.
The wind howled past, blowing down a few leaves that rustled as they fell to the ground.
Ying Qian's earlier panic vanished instantly.
Soon, silence fell again.
Breaking all this was the sound of sobbing, Chen Wenzhi bowing his head and shedding tears... The tears were scalding hot in the cold winter night. They fell into her collar, and she trembled. Her glasses hurt from digging into them, so she took them off.
With no more restraint, Chen Wenzhi cried louder and more disheveled, snot and tears all over Ying Qian.
She didn't mind the dirt; she just wanted Chen Wenzhi to stop crying.
His body gradually convulsed as tears fell, his right hand gripping Ying Qian's thin sweatshirt tightly, and just an inch below was her skin.
The embrace grew tighter and tighter; he wished he could melt Ying Qian into his own body, so they would never be separated... so he wouldn't be disliked...
Ying Qian's lips twitched a few times as she suppressed a laugh, patting his back and trying to soften her voice, "Why are you crying? Don't cry, don't cry, sweetie, don't cry..."
She didn't think she had ever seen Chen Wenzhi cry so miserably before.
She was holding him so tightly that she had difficulty breathing, and she gestured by hitting Chen Wenzhi's back harder.
He then banished the morbid thoughts that had been swirling in his mind, and quickly loosened his grip, but kept the frail girl in his arms tightly within his embrace.
That's good... that's enough...
"Isn't there a saying that men don't easily shed tears? Don't cry."
Chen Wenzhi's voice broke with sadness, and he spoke haltingly, "I...I'm...sorry...you...don't...hate...me?"
After three intense evening study sessions, Ying Qian struggled to piece together the fragmented words in her mind.
I'm sorry, do you really hate me?
She recited it to herself, chuckled very softly, and silently patted his back to help him catch his breath.
"I won't hate you... I won't hate you... How could I hate you..."
Ying Qian's suppressed smile as she spoke automatically turned into sarcasm in Chen Wenzhi's ears.
Tears streamed down his face, but his voice steadied somewhat as he pleaded, swallowing his pride, "I shouldn't have been jealous, I shouldn't have distrusted you, I was wrong... Ying Qian, please forgive me..."
Upon hearing this, Ying Qian was filled with a huge question mark. She seemed helpless. "Who told you I was angry with you? I'm not angry. You see, if I were angry, would I still be walking with you?"
"Hmm," the man replied in a muffled voice, then pulled his hand away to wipe his tears.
Ying Qian couldn't see his expression clearly, but it must have been hilarious. Just thinking about it made her want to laugh. She raised her hand and gently wiped away the tears on his face, feeling helpless and heartbroken.
In this relationship, Chen Wenzhi was always the one who was most deeply involved.
Ying Qian seemed like an outsider. She would only respond when Chen Wenzhi stood in front of her. She dutifully held onto the identity of "girlfriend," but never knew how to be a proper girlfriend.
Thinking about it, she felt quite guilty.
The bent-over hug lasted for about ten minutes before ending.
Ying Qian quickly stretched her muscles and bones. Her joints felt like they were covered in rust, and it was extremely painful to stretch her arms and legs. The clattering sound between her joints was clearly audible when she moved.
Chen Wenzhi was probably still feeling wronged, so he carefully tugged at the hem of her clothes!
She finally understood why he had suddenly taken this shortcut. Chen Wenzhi was just too proud to let her see his face covered in tears.
Thinking about this made her even angrier: "Let me see what it'll be like when you cry?"
He stammered for a long time before finally uttering a single word: "ugly."
"Pfft." Ying Qian laughed, hooking her arm around his shoulder. "That lame excuse? You're afraid of the dark, yet you're running around in the dark..."
