"Knock knock"
The light was still on in Meng Beiyan's room as he sank into the soft sofa.
This small county town won't have skyscrapers that stay lit up all night, nor will it have a bustling nightlife.
Only the sound of the north wind howling could be heard.
The person outside the door called out hesitantly, "Brother, it's me."
The string hanging in Meng Beiyan's heart snapped with a "thud." He got up, feeling dizzy. He opened the door; the corridor was dark, and the dim light inside reflected in her clear eyes.
She looked somewhat haggard in the light, and tugged at the man's sleeve with her small hand, stammering as she explained her purpose: "I... I have cockroaches in my room... I'm afraid to go back..."
She boasted that she was fearless, except for cockroaches!
Cockroaches are like this: if one appears, there will be a whole nest of them.
She screamed at the sight of each cockroach, but when she saw a nest of cockroaches by the bedside, she thought everyone else was resting, so she covered her mouth to keep quiet and quickly ran to Meng Beiyan's door to knock.
The next second, the man leaned over and embraced her, his shadow enveloping her small figure.
She was enveloped in a refreshing minty scent mixed with the aroma of cologne.
She was trying to break free.
Meng Beiyan's soft sobs reached my ears.
She patted his back. Meng Beiyan had been too sensitive lately, bursting into tears at the drop of a hat. She couldn't do anything about it and didn't want to know why.
If a hug makes him feel better, then so be it.
The draft made Ying Qian shiver, and Meng Beiyan retreated into the room, the wind blowing the door shut.
Meng Beiyan's voice was deep: "Did Chen Wenzhi ever hug you like this?"
She hesitated for a few seconds, then said, "No."
He smiled wryly; his sister had lied.
It doesn't matter anymore...
Reason prevented him from doing anything to Ying Qian. His red, tear-filled eyes stared at her blankly, as if in a trance. She gently shook her head and raised her hand to wipe away her tears with a pained expression.
"Don't cry, you're the older brother. I haven't even cried yet, how can you cry?"
After comforting Meng Beiyan, she poured him a glass of water.
The room wasn't warm, but the hot water brought him some warmth.
The two snuggled together, the man's head resting obediently on the girl's rounded shoulder.
The light bulb flickered due to unstable voltage, but the house did not develop any eeriness or other atmosphere as a result.
Ying Qian asked, "What's the reason this time?"
Why are you crying?
Meng Beiyan: "Cold."
He's a burly man, 1.9 meters tall, yet he uttered the word "cold" in a delicate voice.
Ying Qian let out a soft laugh, then, as if remembering something, her smile vanished instantly. She abruptly touched his forehead with the back of her hand; it was frighteningly hot.
She turned pale and frantically searched for a thermometer in the room, the warmth of his forehead still lingering on the back of her hand.
"Brother, do you have a thermometer?"
"No." He closed his eyes, his voice sounding tired.
Seeing his sickly appearance, Ying Qian covered him with a blanket and hurriedly called a car on her phone. She was only wearing a nightgown, which wasn't warm enough, but she didn't feel cold at all.
While waiting for the bus, I put a towel on his forehead.
He seemed to be asleep, with traces of his body still on his face and the flush not yet completely gone. Ying Qian held his cold hand, rubbed her cheek against his face, and almost squeezed out tears.
He gripped her hand even tighter, as if afraid she would leave.
She kept reassuring her, "I won't go, I won't go..."
Meng Beiyan's reaction improved.
The car has arrived.
Ying Qian thought it was really lucky that she could call a car in the middle of the night.
She carried Meng Beiyan out of the room in her slippers. He cooperated, his legs too weak to stand. When Ying Qian finally got into the car, she was covered in sweat.
The driver didn't ask where we were going; he knew just by looking at the man.
Ying Qian wrapped the thin blanket around him even tighter; the car had air conditioning, so it was much warmer.
He stubbornly leaned against Ying Qian, his brows furrowed into a deep frown, his hands trembling uncontrollably, and he kept muttering, "Don't go, don't go... Mom... don't leave me..."
Upon hearing what he was saying, Ying Qian's expression suddenly turned serious, her pupils dilated, and even her fingertips began to tremble. Regaining her composure, she gently pressed his shoulder and whispered, "I won't go... I won't go..."
The man in her arms finally calmed down.
The hospital emergency room was crowded and chaotic. Ying Qianxin was also confused, but luckily the driver was kind and, seeing that she was a girl and not very strong, helped her out.
Ying Qian repeatedly said, "Thank you! Thank you!"
The driver wiped his sweat and waved his hand dismissively: "It's alright!"
Ying Qian didn't have time to say thank you again and hurriedly went to register Meng Beiyan.
They worked on it until the early hours of the morning.
He lay quietly on the makeshift hospital bed in the corridor. After the IV drip finished, she finally fell asleep beside the bed.
Tonight is unusually short.
When she woke up, strands of her hair were tangled around Chen Wenzhi's fingertips. He tugged at the corners of his mouth, a pale smile spreading across his lips. "Sleep a little longer..."
Ying Qian found that she couldn't open her eyes wide enough, and her brain seemed to have crashed. She actually fell asleep.
Meng Beiyan's eyes were filled with obsession, and the small amount of tenderness he felt was squeezed out.
"Thank you, I love you, Ying Qian."
After he finished speaking, he closed his eyes, unsure if Ying Qian had heard him.
Judging from the way she was drooling, she probably didn't hear it. That's good, that's good...
The nurse came over and put an IV drip on him.
"Sir, why don't you let your girlfriend sleep on that chair over there? It's uncomfortable for her to sleep like this," the nurse said.
"No need, I'm afraid of waking her up," Meng Beiyan said softly.
The nurse didn't say anything more. After giving Meng Beiyan the injection, she went to take care of other patients.
The temperature has dropped sharply recently, and many people are getting sick.
Meng Beiyan sighed and turned on his phone, which was switched off.
