Chapter 245: Sad Retreat

Although the troops led by Ajige were larger than those of the Ming army, the disparity was not as huge as one or two times.

Therefore, Ajige adopted the tactic of feinting attacks on three sides to contain the enemy and attacking the main force on one side to break through.

Normally, there is nothing wrong with doing this.

But the Ming army commander was no fool. He quickly observed the distribution of Jiannu troops through a telescope, discovered the Jiannu's tactics, and adopted a counterattack plan.

After the deployment of troops was completed, the Ming army on the left and right wings took advantage of the setback of the main attack of the Jiannu army and suddenly launched an attack, using weapons that had been hidden since the beginning of the battle - hand-thrown bombs, which were black powder grenades.

Even when under great pressure during the attack, Kong Youde did not use this individual weapon, but instead used grenade vehicles with greater power and longer range to suppress and block the enemy.

Obviously, the grenade carriers were running low on bombs. Ajige could tell this. He continued to attack regardless of casualties, hoping for a lucky break.

But Ajige's hope was shattered by the fierce counterattack of the Ming army on both wings. The Ming army used volleys of guns and grenades to clear the way and launched a fierce counterattack against the Jiannu army's feint attack.

The explosion rumbled, clouds of black smoke rose up, shrapnel flew, lead bullets shot out, and the sudden and fierce firepower caused great chaos and panic to the Jiannu.

The lethality of black powder grenades naturally cannot be compared with that of later grenades; because they are thrown by hand, they cannot be made as big as sky bombs.

Therefore, there were many casualties, but few deaths. However, on the battlefield, everyone fought with red eyes, a contest of strength and skill. Injury meant a decrease in combat effectiveness, a psychological blow, and a stronger opponent.

What was more important was the panic and chaos caused by the grenades. When the grenades were thrown under my feet, my ears would buzz and I would even be scared to the point of jumping up and down!

On the one hand, the Ming army was in chaos, but on the other hand, the Ming army had been accumulating strength for a long time and had a strict battle formation. In the local counterattack, the Ming army's strength was greater than that of the Jiannu army's feint attack. The Jiannu army was caught off guard and was beaten back step by step.

"Kill, kill, charge!" Ming generals Zhang Dalu and Shang Keyi shouted loudly, leading the way, wielding the officers' standard swords, and slashing at the enemy mercilessly.

Crack! Guard Captain Ede raised his sword to block, but the scimitar was unexpectedly cut off by Zhang Dalu's powerful and heavy hard steel sword. The blade went down and slashed across Ede's face diagonally.

His skin was torn and blood was gushing out. Ede screamed and took several steps back, with a bloody scene before his eyes.

Puff! A Ming soldier rushed forward and thrust his bayonet into Ede's abdomen. With a twist of his wrist, the soldier pulled out the triangular bayonet, and bloody intestines and internal organs rushed out of the wound.

Ede raised his bloody face and let out an inhuman scream, trying in vain to cover his tangled and bloody intestines. He was kicked down by the soldier and twisted in pain on the ground.

"Kill! Kill!"

More than a dozen pairs of big feet stepped past Ede's body in a disorderly manner. Accompanied by passionate shouts, the Ming soldiers with bayonets rushed forward. No one paid attention to the battle-hardened Jiannu officer who was skilled in archery and horsemanship lying on the ground.

Cavalry Captain Tanaka brandished a scimitar and shouted and howled with several of his personal soldiers, trying to stop the defeated soldiers from retreating, but this attracted the attention of the Ming army.

More than a dozen grenades were thrown randomly, sending wisps of green smoke rising from the feet of the Jiannu. Even the brave Jiannu were frightened and subconsciously dodged.

The sound of the explosion shook the eardrums, black smoke rose, shrapnel burst out, hitting the bodies, legs and feet of the Jiannu, and set off a burst of screams.

The smoke had just dissipated a little, and in the blurry vision, Tanaka's eyes widened. More than a dozen Ming soldiers were either kneeling or standing, pointing the black muzzles of their guns here.

Bright lights flashed, white smoke rose, and more than a dozen lead bullets whizzed towards them.

Hot blood splattered on Tanaka's face. One of his bodyguards covered his neck, spun around, and fell down with his eyes wide open.

Severe pain shot through his chest and abdomen. Dazed, Tanaka looked down and saw two bullet holes oozing blood. It was too close, just over twenty meters away. Even his armor couldn't stop the spurting lead bullets.

His strength quickly drained away as blood gushed out. Tanaka staggered, used his knife to support himself, and barely managed to avoid falling down.

A team of Ming troops rushed forward shouting, killing the wounded Jiannu soldiers who had fallen to the ground and fighting hand-to-hand with other Jiannu soldiers.

Another Ming army unit arrived to assist, throwing a dozen grenades into the Jiannu ranks. Even as the smoke from the explosions filled the air, the Ming soldiers charged forward, bayonets thrust high. Their faces were grim and ferocious, like those of ferocious demons and monsters.

Tanaka could no longer hold on and fell backward. Puffs of smoke drifted across the clear sky, but his vision turned from gray to dark, and finally to permanent black.

Close combat is brutal and bloody, testing coordination and courage over martial prowess. Even the most skilled warriors wouldn't dare confront an army in battle.

Imagine a dozen or even dozens of bayonets coming at you head-on; it would be simply impossible to resist. After the army was equipped with firearms, the so-called "ten thousand enemies" and the so-called generals like Guan Yu and Zhang Fei lost their basis for existence.

In the face of spurting lead bullets, death is equal. Surviving a hail of bullets is not about skill, but about luck.

Obviously, the lucky Jiannu were a minority. Those who survived the fierce counterattack of the Ming army, or even managed to escape, were considered very lucky.

Before Ajige could mobilize his troops, the Ming army made a breakthrough on the left wing of the main attack direction and defeated the Jiannu army's feint attack.

If it were just a setback, it wouldn't have been a big deal, but the Ming army's breakthrough immediately exposed the Jiannu's flank. After a brief reorganization, the Ming army's flintlock soldiers fired a deadly hail of bullets at the Jiannu from dozens of meters away.
