Chapter 1 (Bonus Chapter): The Weather Changes, It Snows

The next day, Shen Mu Ning woke up early, but stayed on the kang (a heated brick bed) until the sun was high in the sky before finally waking up.

There was no other way; I had been constantly thinking about dealing with the Fu Rong organization and had been busy for a long time without stopping.

After attending the celebration banquet, I felt even more tired, both mentally and physically.

Many people knew her and Sun Wu's identities and had designs on her.

Every time I go out, I'm bound to bump into some outstanding gay men and chat with them.

Shen Mu Ning wasn't stupid; after several attempts, she naturally figured out what they were up to.

Even if you stay at home, you can't avoid being disturbed.

Therefore, Shen Mu Ning was physically and mentally exhausted during this period.

Now that things are finally quiet, she's going to stay in bed and sleep in.

However, thinking of Chu Mingxu, and his grandparents.

Shen Mu Ning still struggled to crawl out of her warm bed, get dressed, and eat.

I ran into Zhang Jiayang on my way out and asked him a question:

"By the way, Zhang Zhiqing, have you visited Grandpa and Grandma Chu yet?"

Although in that novel, Grandpa Chu and Grandma Chu's accident happened next year.

But now that she has already changed the plot of the novel, we can no longer take the events in it as prophecies.

Anyway, as Shen Mu Ning watched the snowflakes falling from the sky, she was still worried about whether the cowshed was sturdy.

With victory seemingly within reach, Shen Muling didn't want any unexpected events to occur at this crucial juncture.

Zhang Jiayang scratched his head. "I went to check on them a few days ago. Grandpa Chu and the others seem to be doing fine. What's wrong?"

Zhang Jiayang was a little nervous when he was suddenly asked the question.

His brother entrusted his grandparents to his care, so he has to make sure they are well taken care of.

"It's nothing, I'm just worried that something might happen because the snow is falling so heavily again."

"It should be fine, right?" Zhang Jiayang muttered. "Should I go and reinforce it for them?"

Although he had never seen a house collapsed under the weight of heavy snow, he did not know how terrifying the winters were in Lingbei.

But since Shen Mu Ning has said so, it's best to take precautions.

Upon hearing his words, Shen Mu Ning shook her head.

"No, I'll go talk to the captain and ask them to find someone to take care of it."

Although the situation is clearer now, it's still uncertain whether Grandpa Chu and the others will be able to return soon.

Now, in the eyes of the people in the brigade, they are considered "stinking intellectuals" and are not well-liked.

It's not good for Zhang Jiayang to be so impulsive and interact with so many people.

If someone with ulterior motives were to report it, that would be real trouble.

But having the battalion commander handle it is a different story.

Zhang Jiayang nodded without hesitation, since Mingxu had already said so before he left.

Shen Mu Ning is smarter than him; you can't go wrong by listening to her.

The two agreed that Shen Mu Ning would bring a pound of brown sugar and six feet of cloth, and brave the wind and snow to the home of the brigade leader, Gu Chengde.

The person who opened the door after hearing the knock was none other than little Gu Xiaohu.

Upon seeing Shen Mu Ning, he gave her a big smile without hesitation.

"Sister Chen, you're finally back! I missed you so much."

Gu Xiaohu was overjoyed to see Shen Mu Ning, the hero who hunts wild boars.

Who could blame him when he was the one among the children in the group who had the most contact with Sister Chen?

Even when we caught a wild boar, it was he who tipped us off.

Knowing Sister Chen gave him something to brag about; he's now the undisputed king of the kids in the brigade!

Of course, there's one more thing he has to admit: he was craving the candy his sister had given him.

"Pfft!" Shen Mu Ning smiled.

He pulled two candies out of his pocket. "Here, Little Tiger has such a sweet mouth. Eat two more, and you'll definitely be even sweeter in the future."

"Hehe," Gu Xiaohu took the candy and grinned foolishly, "Thank you, Sister Chen, please come in and sit down."

After accepting the candy, Gu Xiaohu led the person inside.

"Grandma, Sister Chen is looking for you."

He's a sensible kid; he knows that if Shen Mu Ning comes to his house, she must have something to ask an adult.

So after bringing the person into the house and handing him over to his grandmother, he went to find his grandfather.

"Little Shen, come and sit down." Li Guihua saw her and immediately told her to take off her shoes and get on the kang (a heated brick bed).

Shen Mu Ning didn't refuse. The kang (heated brick bed) was indeed warm, and she got along quite well with Aunt Guihua, so she didn't stand on ceremony.

"Aunt Guihua is sewing shoe soles!"

Li Guihua was layering layers of homespun cloth and paste together; it was clear at a glance that she was making shoe soles.

"Yes, it's snowing and we're hibernating in the winter. With nothing to do, we might as well make some shoe soles to store."

He kept talking while his hands kept moving.

This is her consistent practice, or rather, the practice of the vast majority of rural women.

The days of hibernation are leisurely; besides tidying up the house and the outside, one can only make shoe soles.

"Is there something wrong with Xiao Shen today?" She knew that Shen Mu Ning never liked to cause trouble for others.

If someone comes to your door with gifts, they definitely have something to do.

"Yes, I need to talk to Uncle Gu about something."

"Then you'll have to wait. Xiao Hu has probably gone to find someone."

Shen Mu Ning smiled and nodded. Gu Xiao Hu had told her before he left that he was going to find his grandfather and bring him back.

The two chatted casually, and Shen Mu Ning didn't just sit idly by; she helped Li Gui Hua out.

Gu Chengde returned shortly afterward.

"Uncle Gu, you're back!"

"Um."

Gu Chengde was shivering with cold, and Li Guihua urged him to sit on the kang (a heated brick bed).

The three of them were drinking sweet soup on the kang (a heated brick bed) when Shen Mu Ning finally revealed her purpose.

"Uncle Gu, the weather is about to change. I think many houses in the brigade need to be reinforced, right?"

Gu Chengde was somewhat confused. "Yes, the snow here is always falling heavily, and it's not safe to not reinforce the area in winter."

Today, I went out with the Party Secretary and others to remind everyone to pay attention to reinforcement.
