After chatting with Mr. Tan in the study for a while, Li Yao also learned about some of the Cui family's situation.
The Cui family used to be a large family. During the war, they supported learning from the enemy's superior skills to control the enemy. Therefore, every generation had people who went abroad to study and then came back to save the country.
By the time of Cui's maternal grandmother, a large portion of the family's businesses were located overseas. Both of Cui's maternal grandmother's brothers had also gone abroad. Cui's mother, being a woman, studied in China and eventually married Mr. Zhou, after which she remained in the capital.
Given the Cui family's reputation among the upper class and their contributions during the war, there shouldn't have been any major problems during those turbulent ten years. Moreover, both of them were former professors at Peking University and had students protecting them, so there shouldn't have been any issues.
But at that time, the person in charge was seriously ill, and everyone below began to take sides. The two factions fought fiercely, and someone coveted the Cui family's property, so he persuaded their students to take action.
In the end, all of the Cui family's properties and shops were divided up. Even with Old Master Tan's intervention, he could only save Old Master Zhou's house and some calligraphy and paintings.
Li Yao secretly used her mental power to find out the list of people who attacked the Cui family. At first, Old Tan was very resistant, fearing that Li Yao, his only son, would get into trouble again. Later, he only told her after Li Yao used her mental power.
There were eight families in total. Two of them were later demoted and have recently returned. The other families were all prominent figures.
After silently making a note of it, Li Yao planned to make a trip there in a few days.
Li Yao assured Old Master Tan that she would be fine, but that he should be wary of others. Her visit to the Tan family today would surely be noticed by those with ulterior motives, so she needed to be well-informed and avoid being targeted without being able to find the mastermind.
The Tan family was convinced by Li Yao and told her to be careful in everything and to tell him if anything happened, as he was still able to move around despite his old age.
Finally, Li Yao asked Old Tan if he had any news about his maternal grandmother's brother. Old Tan sighed and said, "In the past ten years, we've basically lost contact with the outside world and the country. I haven't heard any news about the Cui family since. However, Old Cui's brothers are five and seven years older than her, and if they were still alive, they would be about the same age as her."
Li Yao nodded to indicate that she understood, and said that it would be up to fate, and that she would meet him when the time was right.
However, Li Yao is 25 years old and still not married. Old Tan said that if there is someone he likes, he should bring her to meet him.
Li Yao readily agreed.
Both the elderly person and the child were quite satisfied with this conversation.
Li Yao was asked to stay for lunch and became acquainted with most of the younger generation of the Tan family.
Knowing that Li Yao was the granddaughter of Old Zhou and Old Cui, Tan's eldest and second uncles each gave her a red envelope, instructing her to call them "elder uncle" and "second uncle" along with Tan Xinxin.
They also told Li Yao about their childhood, saying that their family was educated by Old Zhou, and also told Li Yao about her maternal grandparents when they were young. This allowed Li Yao to learn more about the two elderly people.
After dinner, Li Yao was driven back by Tan Guangyao, the eldest son of Uncle Tan's family and Tan Xinxin's cousin, and Tan Xinxin herself. They said that Tan Guangyao, her cousin, should get acquainted with the family and would take her and Xinxin to play when they came over in the future.
Li Yao did not refuse this kindness, and even invited Tan Guangyao and Tan Xinxin into the house to have some fruit and tea. She also brought them some snacks made by her own chef before sending them off.
Tan Guangyao has a good personality. He even said he envied Li Yao for living alone and jokingly said that if he ever angered his father, Li Yao should definitely leave him a room to stay in.
Li Yao happily agreed; Tan Xinxin, her cousin, knew how to get close to people.
