Zhen Tian returned to the orphanage, clutching her chest, finding it hard to accept the feeling of her world being turned upside down.
She watched a group of people come and go in front of her, but it was as if no one could see her.
"Teacher, Niu Niu is missing."
Several children ran over; it was already lights out and bedtime. Niu Niu's roommate had only come to find the teacher because she hadn't appeared.
All the teachers at the orphanage were mobilized, but none of them could find her.
Zhen Tian frowned in surprise, "I'm here, I'm here."
She waved.
"Eh..."
Zhen Tian stared at her palms, then touched her face.
It looks like an adult.
"What's going on?" she asked, bewildered.
"Teacher, it was these guys who took Niu Niu away this afternoon." An older child brought along a few little boys.
"Where is Niu Niu?" the teacher asked anxiously.
The boys pushed and shoved each other, and the last boy to be pushed out stammered, "We went to play, and told her to wait for us over there. When we came back tonight, we couldn't find that spot..."
"You said Niu Niu is still outside!" The teacher's voice suddenly rose. She quickly contacted other teachers to go out and look for her. Only one teacher was left at the orphanage to look after the children.
Zhen Tian knew where she was waiting, so she ran up to the teacher and said, "I know where she is!"
But the teacher passed right through her body.
Stunned, she stood there for a long time before finally recovering: "Am I a ghost? Am I dead?"
She walked to the spot where she had been laid down, where the child was sleeping, leaning against a big tree.
Zhen Tian didn't know how much time had passed, but she seemed to see two days and two nights before finally the teacher appeared with a flashlight.
"Found it, it's here."
Several men in police uniforms followed behind him.
One of the officers approached Zhen Tian and tried to wake her, but failed. Finally, he checked Zhen Tian's breathing. The officer's expression turned serious, and he shook his head. The other officers understood his meaning.
The child is gone.
The police officers sighed. Although they were in charge of protecting lives, they couldn't help but feel something when dealing with children.
Zhen Tian watched as she was certified dead, saw herself cremated, and her ashes scattered beneath the tree where she had died. She saw that the orphanage only punished those who had lost their children by not allowing them to eat.
The orphanage resumed its operations as if she had never been to this world.
Zhen Tian was a little sad, but she could understand. Such a large orphanage had only a dozen or so teachers managing many children. They probably didn't have the energy to be sad or unable to continue working because of her departure.
Zhen Tian lingered under that big tree for a long time.
As drowsiness overcame her, she fell asleep leaning against a big tree, just like when she was a child.
Even as she slept, she was still thinking about where she would end up this time, whether she was dead or alive.
...
Ji Yuzhi went to the outside restroom and quickly washed up.
From a distance, I saw several doctors and nurses walking into the ward.
His heart clenched painfully.
Ji Yu ran at full speed, not even daring to imagine what kind of scene unfolded inside.
Zhen Tian opened her eyes and felt restricted, which made her feel a little uncomfortable.
She moved her nose; the ventilator on her nose was pressing uncomfortably against her face.
"Little sister!" Lu Yiran was the first to notice that she was awake. He stood up abruptly, and the stool tipped backward from the force of his movement.
A group of people gathered around.
Zhen Tian saw her parents' red and wet eyes, and the worried looks in her brothers' and uncles' eyes. She looked around again, but where was Zhizhi?
After discovering that she was awake, Zhen Yan pressed the red button on the bedside table.
At that moment, the doctors all rushed in.
"Let me check it out."
As usual, the nurse came up to measure her blood pressure, but Zhen Tian dodged away as soon as she touched her arm.
The ventilator was gradually covered by fog.
The nurse lifted her oxygen mask, and Zhen Tian's mouth was moving slightly, making very soft sounds.
"What did you say, baby?" Lu Ti leaned forward and tenderly touched Zhen Tian's face, which had red marks from the oxygen mask.
"Only...only..."
She had just regained consciousness, and was completely weak. Her voice was so soft it sounded like a kitten meowing.
Lu Ti's expression was complicated, but she still searched the ward.
"Where is Xiaoyuzhi?"
"He just went out to shower..."
Before Lu Lin could finish speaking, Ji Yuzhi rushed in from outside the ward: "Sweetie!"
"Perfect timing, come here quickly." Lu Ti didn't have time to think too much and pulled him directly to the bedside.
“Just…” Zhen Tian’s eyes crinkled with joy.
"You're awake." Ji Yuzhi licked his dry lips, his mouth twitching several times before finally managing a smile.
"I need to examine the patient. Should our family members move out first?" the nurse said.
Zhen Tian held onto Ji Yuzhi's hand tightly and wouldn't let go.
"If it's not a problem, let's continue the examination as is." Ji Yuzhi only came to his senses after seeing that she was awake.
The nurse's gaze swept over the two of them; it was the first time she'd ever seen anything like this. But having spent so much time in the hospital, she'd heard all sorts of strange requests.
This is nothing.
The nurse worked quickly and finished the measurement efficiently. The doctor then asked a few questions.
Every time he asked a question, Ji Yuzhi would repeat it before Zhen Tian would answer. Her clingy behavior was truly unheard of.
Zhen Tian was very weak, and after a brief inquiry, she fell asleep again.
"Don't leave." Zhen Tian said to Ji Yuzhi even as she was unconscious.
"I won't go, I won't go." Ji Yuzhi's hand was being pulled by her.
Lu Lin rolled his eyes.
"Thank you for your hard work, Yuzhi." Lu Ti walked over, her gaze falling on the hospital bed, but her words were directed at Ji Yuzhi.
"It's not hard work." Ji Yuzhi shook his head, finally managing a smile: "You guys go have lunch first, I'll call you when Tian Tian wakes up."
"Okay, we'll bring it to you when we get back. Is there anything you'd like to eat?" Lu Yinuo nodded in agreement.
"Whatever." Ji Yuzhi has never been particular about food: "Bring back a cup of honey water, Tian Tian will want some when she wakes up."
Zhen Tian, true to her name, loves sweets and is always carrying a beverage. However, for her health, Ji Yuzhi always forces her to drink water. Later, they compromised; Zhen Tian couldn't drink plain water, so they added honey, which she then loved.
"Alright." The people in the ward gradually left.
Ji Yuzhi lowered his head, trying to catch his breath. His heart, which had been pounding, finally calmed down.
He leaned over Zhen Tian's hand and closed his eyes.
But their hands remained clasped tightly together.
