Chapter 4: Reopening the Clinic...
For the first time, Chen Yin realized that her mother could have such a strong side, which was different from what she had known before.
She raised the corners of her mouth and smiled easily, "No."
"That's good." Wu Dongmei believed it and pulled her daughter inside.
When she looked up, she saw the luggage hidden behind her daughter. She thought her daughter was graduating and brought back some odds and ends that she didn't need for work.
Wu Dongmei took a quick step and picked up two luggage bags.
But how could Chen Yin just stand there and watch? She quickly picked up the remaining luggage bags on the ground and snatched one from her mother.
After a quarrel, the two men ended up carrying one each and then lifting one together, and finally they got in.
At this time, the two of them also came from the dim light of the front door to the bright main room.
Wu Dongmei felt distressed when she saw her daughter's pale lips and sweaty appearance, and frowned.
"You must have come home this morning by train, as you're at this hour. You must be terribly hot in such a hot day. I heard from others that the food on the train is just so-so. I'll make you something you like."
"Mom, I just want to eat the noodles you made."
Upon hearing this, Wu Dongmei seemed to have endless power bursting out of her body and quickly got busy.
"Okay, okay! I bought some noodles today, so I'll make them for you right away."
But when sitting at the dining table, Chen Yin looked helplessly at the fried bacon with watercress and steamed sausage on the table. She knew at a glance that her mother made them specially for her.
"Eat quickly! Eat quickly! They are all your favorites."
Wu Dongmei placed the mixed noodles in front of her daughter and urged her.
Chen Yin took it and, under her mother's gentle gaze, stuffed a spoonful of noodles into her mouth.
Suddenly eating such spicy food, she subconsciously wanted to breathe in to relieve the pain, but the memories that surged through her body quickly suppressed it, and she ate the noodles comfortably with big mouthfuls.
From time to time, he would take a bite of other dishes, his face turned red from eating, and he kept breathing in, feeling both unbearable and refreshed.
When Chen Yin finished a big bowl of noodles, she looked at the empty bottom of the bowl and her cheeks couldn't help but feel hot.
Wu Dongmei didn't notice her daughter's embarrassment and asked with concern, "Do you want another bowl? Mom will make it for you. There's plenty of food at home."
“No, no.”
Chen Yin waved her hands frantically, subconsciously puffing out her swollen belly, licked her lips and said, "My stomach can't hold any more."
Wu Dongmei checked it with her eyes and nodded with satisfaction, "If you like it, mom will make it for you tomorrow."
"Yeah." Chen Yin nodded heavily.
Late at night, after washing herself clean, Chen Yin lay on the bed filled with the scent of sunshine and fell into a deep sleep.
In the early morning, the melodious chirping of birds and the low voices of people can be faintly heard outside the window.
"Hey? Dongmei, aren't you going to work as a laborer in Boss Zhang's orange orchard today?"
Hearing this, Wu Dongmei showed a smug smile on her face and said in a low voice:
"I won't be going until my daughter comes back. I still have to make breakfast for her, so you guys go ahead and do your work."
After saying that, she turned and walked into the yard.
You know, Wu Dongmei is well-known among them for being hardworking. She suddenly stopped working, which stunned Liu Yan who was asking her questions.
The person standing next to her knew the reason and reminded her:
"Dongmei is the first girl in our town to go to a key university. She loves her dearly. How could she be willing to do hard labor when she returns home?"
As soon as this topic was brought up, other people in the group also became interested.
"I heard her daughter will graduate this year and will be a doctor in a big hospital in the future. Dongmei just needs to prepare to enjoy her life."
"Which hospital is this doctor from? It's much more convenient to have a doctor you know these days."
"It's definitely a big hospital anyway. If you have any headaches or fevers in the future, just ask Dongmei for help and find her daughter."
"Then it seems that we have to flatter her more in the future."
As soon as these words were spoken, some people in the crowd's expressions twisted uncontrollably and rolled their eyes in the direction of the Chen family.
Chen Yin, who had just woken up, knew nothing about all this. When she opened her eyes, she was still a little dazed. She sat there for a while before realizing that she had returned home.
She quickly got up and went downstairs, just in time to see her mother setting the dishes on the table.
In this situation, she was embarrassed and at a loss, "Mom, I..."
Wu Dongmei didn't feel anything unusual and said excitedly, "Hurry up! Go wash your face. Mom made you some noodles that you like. It's perfect for you to eat after washing your face."
Chen Yin felt ashamed of having to rely on her elders to cook for her all the time. Just as she was about to say something, her mother suddenly pushed her out.
Helplessly, she could only wash up first.
When she sat at the dining table again, Chen Yin said solemnly, "Mom, I'll cook from now on... You teach me how to cook, and I'll cook for you too."
She was about to say that she would do it herself, but she quickly realized that neither her previous self nor her current self seemed to be able to cook, so she changed the subject immediately.
Wu Dongmei didn't notice anything unusual and nodded in agreement.
"When I start working and live on my own, I'll have to learn how to cook. Food served outside isn't as delicious as what I cook myself, and it's expensive, so it's better to learn more."
Having said this, Chen Yin couldn't bear to hide it any longer, so she sat up straight and looked directly at her mother.
"Mom, I decided to go home and reopen Dad's Chinese medicine clinic. I won't work outside anymore."
At first, Wu Dongmei thought she had misheard.
She was stunned for a while, and when she saw her daughter's serious eyes, the confusion on her face instantly turned into joy.
"Really? You've made up your mind!"
"It would be best if you could go home!"
At this moment, Wu Dongmei's mind was overwhelmed with joy, and she was so excited that she didn't know what to say.
In her opinion, no matter what decision her daughter makes, she agrees with it.
But compared to working alone outside, she would rather her daughter go home and open a clinic, so that she doesn't have to worry about her daughter not being able to take care of herself alone.
What made her even more excited was that her daughter planned to reopen her husband's clinic.
Looking back on the happiest time in her life, it was when her husband diagnosed her pulse and prescribed medicine while she took care of the household chores and her daughter learned to speak.
This clinic carries the most unforgettable times of their family, and it is worth cheering that it can "see the light of day again."
While thinking, Wu Dongmei's eyes unconsciously drifted away, as if she saw her husband's appearance.
After breakfast, Chen Yin hurried to the post office to deliver a letter of denunciation, and then the mother and daughter took quick action.
It has been eight years since the clinic in front was opened. Even though Wu Dongmei cleaned it several times a year, it could not hide the influence of time and it was dilapidated.
Some items that cannot be used but are still wanted as souvenirs are moved to other places for storage.
It can still be used, so the mother and daughter washed it and dried it in the sun.
When Chen Yin was wiping the medicine cabinet, she was surprised to find that some of the cabinets still contained medicinal materials.
Those stored at the top are in good condition, but some at the bottom are damp and deteriorating and are in urgent need of sorting.
She checked them all and took out those whose medicinal properties were intact and spread them out to dry, and threw away all those that had gone bad.
After working together, it was already late at night.
Chen Yin looked around and saw that the entire clinic looked as clean as new. She couldn't help but nod in satisfaction.
She stretched her neck to look into the yard and saw her mother bending over to wash the rag. When she straightened up, she pounded her lower back hard. It was obvious that her mother was very tired.
A tingling sensation spread through her heart, and she quickly ran to her mother and helped her up.
"Mom, you rest first. I'll clean the last bit of the attic and then go back to bed."
Wu Dongmei thought about the attic that her husband valued most, nodded and said:
"I clean the attic almost every week. Just wipe it down and go back to bed. Don't stay up too late."
"I know."
Chen Yin watched her mother enter the house before turning and walking towards the attic.
I pushed open the door, and with a "click", the light came on.
At this moment, Chen Yin understood why her mother had to clean the attic room every week, because the attic room was full of various medical books.
The yellowed pages show how precious these books are. Most of them are medical records, and it seems that they were passed down from my father's family.
Chen Yin couldn't help but rush over, feeling the scent of the book with her fingertips, and a smile unconsciously appeared on her face.
For a doctor, there is nothing more precious than what is in front of him.
Chen Yin was surprised and slowly pulled out the nearest book to check.
The cover clearly reads "Chen Zhongbai, April of the Bingyin year." It seems that this should be the pulse diagnosis left by my father.
She quickly opened the cover and eagerly absorbed the knowledge inside.
Before I knew it, the moon was at its zenith.
When Chen Yin was about to take her eyes away from the book reluctantly, she couldn't see the situation in front of her for a moment.
She blinked hard, closed her eyes for a moment, and opened them again to return to normal.
Then, she scanned the entire wall of medical books in front of her, silently arranging the reading time for each book in her mind.
Suddenly, Chen Yin noticed that there seemed to be something different in the position of the bookshelf.
She walked forward slowly, pulled out a book and prepared to take a look at the situation.
However, she never expected that her action would instantly trigger a chain reaction.
The next second, the other medical books placed in the same frame fell down one after another.
When Chen Yin thought about the precious medical books being damaged by the fall, she panicked and quickly stepped forward, squatted down, stretched out her arms, and tried to catch all the medical books.
“Pah, pah!”
A series of falling sounds were heard in her arms. When she saw that all the books were caught, Chen Yin couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief.
At the same time, a smile appeared on her face after a false alarm, "It's okay, it's okay, it almost didn't go bad."
Chen Yin patted her chest and brushed off the dust on the surface of the traditional Chinese medicine book.
She carefully examined them and found that the medical books in her hands were ancient books handed down from generation to generation, and were extremely precious.
I couldn't help but feel relieved again about what had just happened.
Seeing that there was nothing wrong with the book in her hand, Chen Yin prepared to put it back into the bookcase.
But as soon as she took out the rag and wanted to wipe the cabinet, she put the rag on the cabinet and was immediately attracted by the unusual depth of the cabinet.
She subconsciously leaned her head closer and could vaguely see the erected black shadow, "What is this?"
