Chapter 27: Deep in the Dream
What Irene had to do herself was quite simple.
Basically, just find a place to lie down where you won't get in the way and don't get up and cause trouble.
Yu Sheng came to the still sleeping silver-white fox, walked around her huge body and a bunch of tails, and found a place that looked more comfortable - a depression where the two big tails overlapped.
He bent down, pulled the fur on the fox's tail to adjust its position, and patted the fur on the other tail to make it more fluffy. Irene was watching from the side, stunned: "Are you making the bed?"
"Isn't this for lying comfortably?" Yu Sheng said naturally while leaning on the big silver-white furry tail. "God knows how long you need, and I am a person who has very high requirements for sleep quality..."
Irene immediately made a "tsk" sound, and then floated over after lying down, and then the whole picture frame fell straight on the latter's chest: "Catch it."
Yu Sheng hurriedly and frantically caught the picture frame that fell from mid-air. He even thought that this guy was coming to kill him in revenge for the laughter he had just laughed out loud in his heart: "Oh my god! Could you have said something before you fell!"
At least he caught Irene and was not killed by the other party's frame. Then he adjusted his posture, half-lying down and leaning on Hu Li's big tail, holding Irene's frame in both hands, exhaled gently, and waited for the moment to fall asleep.
To sink into another dream from within one's own dream is truly an unprecedented experience.
Irene's low humming could be heard from the oil painting. It was some kind of ancient ballad, as if accompanied by a distant and nostalgic atmosphere. Although he could not understand the lyrics, he could feel a gradually calming power seeping into his heart bit by bit. Yu Sheng felt his eyelids becoming heavy, and in a state of half-asleep and half-awake consciousness, he lowered his head to take another look at the oil painting he was holding in front of him.
It's like holding someone's posthumous photo.jpg.
Yu Sheng: “…”
How could this puppet always create such a vivid sound and appearance? The next second, his thoughts were suddenly interrupted in this somewhat unrestrained thought, and then he suddenly sank in a void, falling straight into the deepest part of this dream.
He felt like he had suddenly lost control of his body, or rather... he could not feel the existence of his body. He seemed to have turned into a void perspective, rapidly traveling through a series of memories, thoughts and perception information that did not belong to him. There were heavy shadows all around him, as if many overlapping image fragments had interwoven into a continuous curtain, and the curtain had merged into a tunnel with no end in sight.
The sound was buzzing and rumbling, and information was pouring into his mind. He couldn't even tell whether it was the sound he actually heard, or the memory that directly appeared in his mind -
Someone was screaming, something was exploding, and a whistling sound came from the power structure of the shuttle. They were falling, and the shuttle rushed out of the track and fell into a world that was not in the path and seemed to have suddenly appeared.
With a huge impact, the Immortal Shuttle crashed into a dark mountain. The spirit of the weapon ran out of the Hengtian weapon and fought with the immortal who was driving the Immortal Shuttle. They argued about things like "withholding spirit stones", "rough driving", and "reporting to the Immortal Gate". Then with an explosion, the spirit of the weapon died, and many people died.
Those who survived also died one after another.
All the deaths and partings turned into a series of fragments that quickly passed by Yu Sheng's eyes. He saw those yellowed and blurry figures die of hunger, die of poisons in the mountains and forests, die of desperate fights, die of... the omnipresent malice that filled this valley.
The valley itself wanted to kill them, by driving the power of hunger.
The "tunnel" that seemed to have no end suddenly disappeared, and Yu Sheng found himself in a faded scene - after passing through many confusing fragments of memory, he finally arrived at Hu Li's dream at the moment.
Just as Irene said, the tones in the dream tend to be consistent. Everything here has an old, lifeless, gray texture. The dark sky, the dark woods, the dirty, gray soil and stones. Just one look at it makes one feel depressed.
"Eileen?" Yu Sheng tried to call out in his heart, because he didn't see the other person.
"I'm here."
"Where are you?" Yu Sheng looked around, "Why can't I see you?"
"With you," Erin's voice seemed to come directly from her mind. This feeling was... strange. "You can't see me, and you can't see your own body. We are now two 'foreign consciousnesses' who have infiltrated. It's nice to have a perspective."
"Oh, so that's how it is." Yu Sheng understood, and immediately began to look for Hu Li in the grove.
He didn't search for too long. In fact, almost the moment he had the idea of looking for the other person, he heard a voice coming from not far away.
That's the sound of digging in the soil.
Yu Sheng immediately followed the sound, his vision floating through the shadowy trees, and soon he saw the white figure.
A silver-haired girl in tattered clothes was kneeling on the edge of a clearing in the forest. Her originally fluffy and beautiful fox tail looked dirty and disheveled now that it was covered with mud. She lowered her head and dug hard in the mud, mumbling to herself as she dug. All around the girl were deep pits of varying sizes dug by her hands.
Yu Sheng "floated" over and came to Hu Li's side.
Hu Li couldn't see him and was still digging hard, digging his hands into the soil again and again.
Irene's voice suddenly entered Yu Sheng's mind: "Talk to her, talk to her."
“She can’t even see us.”
"It's okay. Just talk to her. This is a dream. She will respond. For the dreamer, nothing in a dream is unreasonable."
Yu Sheng thought for a moment and looked at the fox girl: "What are you digging?"
"Mom and Dad..." Hu Li did not doubt the voice he suddenly heard, but answered naturally, "I remember I buried them here... I buried them here..."
Yu Sheng felt his heart sink for some reason, and subconsciously asked again: "Why... do you want to dig them out?"
"I... I missed them," Hu Li gradually stopped, with a blank look in his eyes, but he still answered subconsciously, "I'm so hungry, I wanted to tell them, I'm so hungry... but I held on, they said not to listen to that monster, I held on, but... I'm so hungry..."
Hu Li lowered his head, glanced at his hands covered in mud, and continued digging, muttering to himself as if he was talking to himself: "They should be here, they must be here, they have been staying here well... I listened to them, always listened to them, I didn't listen to that monster..."
"She's not in a right mental state," Irene's voice entered Yu Sheng's mind, "She's so wrong..."
"I know. I felt that her mental state was not right the first time we met." Yu Sheng also answered in his heart.
"That's not what I'm talking about. I mean... it seems like something else has entered her mind, something is trying to intervene and interfere with her thinking," Irene explained, trying to explain a complex situation to a layman like Sheng. "There's someone else's voice in her voice - her own will has been holding on, but the external thoughts are almost unable to hold on."
The latest novel is published first on Liu9shuba!
Irene suddenly stopped talking here.
Hu Li stopped digging, stood up with a confused expression, walked a few steps to the side, and then stood in the open space in a daze.
Yu Sheng followed immediately, and the next second, he seemed to hear a faint and vague voice.
The voice seemed to come directly from the bottom of his heart, and even seemed to be spoken softly by himself.
"Dig them out...
"You just want to meet them, you just want to make sure that you are really listening to them, you haven't seen each other for a long time, right...
"I miss them so much..."
Hu Li turned back blankly and looked at the deep pits he had dug.
"I miss them so much..." she said softly.
Yu Sheng suddenly reacted and realized that the voice he just heard from his heart was the "external intervention" mentioned by Irene! He was connected to Hu Li's dream and spirit, so what he just heard was not his "heart", but the voice of Hu Li's heart! Hu Li slowly turned to another direction in the clearing, as if he wanted to continue digging.
Every handful of soil was gradually digging through her own mental defenses.
Yu Sheng finally understood what the voice was trying to deceive him about. A chill suddenly surged up from the bottom of his heart, and he subconsciously shouted, "Hu Li!"
The fox demon girl stopped blankly and looked back at the empty edge of the woods.
After a long while, her eyes regained some clarity and she recalled where she had heard that familiar voice.
"… Benefactor?"
However, the forest was empty and no longer could be heard from Yu Sheng. The call just now seemed to be just an illusion.
Hu Li stood in the open space in a daze. After a while, she noticed the big pits she had dug around her.
Finally, fear gradually showed on the fox demon girl's face.
She woke up, jolted awake just before the last step of her defenses collapsed.
