Chapter 186 (1864th update)
Luo Yan slept well. After waking up, she teased Zhou Weifang, mischievously touching his Adam's apple. After getting into trouble, she ran off to work.
Zhou Weifang dawdled at home for a long time before finally going out, thinking to himself: Just you wait.
After lying low for several days, his comeback was naturally even more ferocious.
When Luo Yan got home from work on Saturday, she saw a table full of dishes and asked, "Are we having guests tonight?"
Zhou Weifang untied his apron: "No, eat up."
Luo Yan realized something was wrong and took a step back: "What are you going to do?"
Zhou Weifang tapped his fingers absently on the table: "What do you think?"
She even tried to scare him. Luo Yan sat opposite him, bossing him around: "I want to eat shrimp."
After peeling the shells, Zhou Weifang put them in her bowl and said, "Eat more."
Luo Yan consumed every last bit of what she had eaten during the night, and in the end, she was so angry that she bit someone.
Zhou Weifang didn't take it seriously, and the next day he even went so far as to shirtless, wanting her to see him.
Luo Yan lay on the sofa, cursing him for being shameless, yawning and feeling a little sleepy.
She slept soundly that night and was quite energetic at work the next day.
Director Zhang called her into his office and asked, "Xiao Luo, you've been working for a year now, how does it feel?"
Luo Yan started working on July 1st last year, so she was officially hired starting from the 1st of this month. She has been registered with both the personnel department and the finance department, and her application was signed by her supervisor at the time.
Several days later, her boss suddenly asked her about it. She was a little confused, but said, "It's great. My boss and colleagues have been very kind to me, and I've learned a lot myself."
Director Zhang used this as an opening remark, and then said, "It's like this, there's a traffic regulations training course in the department this Sunday, do you think you could go?"
No one wants to have their rest time taken up.
Luo Yan actually wanted to stay home, but she had always been quite accepting of tasks, so she hesitated for a moment and said, "Okay."
Director Zhang breathed a sigh of relief, handed her the notification letter, and said, "Remember to sign in when the time comes."
Signing out signifies attendance.
Luo Yan made a mental note of this and mentioned it to Zhou Weifang during dinner.
Zhou Weifang asked worriedly, "You'll be going to a training course this Sunday and hanging out with your friends next Sunday. That means you won't have a break for half a month. Can you handle that?"
Luo Yan offers another approach: "Training is learning, learning is rest, and playing is also rest."
Zhou Weifang was dumbfounded: "Studying is resting. Yanyan, even if I'm your die-hard fan, I can't agree with that."
Luo Yan was amused by his expression and said, "Then count down one Sunday and see what day it is."
What day? Zhou Weifang did some quick calculations and remembered: "Your business must be on that Friday."
He was actually quite restrained during the weekdays, only going a little wild on Saturday nights. Now that he thought about it, he sighed and said, "Yanyan, let's go to bed early tonight."
Luo Yan laughed uncontrollably, but also coaxed him, "It'll only be a month."
Zhou Weifang repeated his usual line: "For me, it's been ten years."
They're already raving about how sweet it is, but Luo Yan suddenly thought, "What will you do when I'm pregnant?"
Zhou Weifang: "She must be pure and innocent, otherwise she will corrupt the child."
That's not how you use the word, but Luo Yan had some doubts about whether he could do it, and said, "Are you sure?"
Zhou Weifang: "Yanyan, we've been dating for over three years, and I used to think about you all night when I was in my cold bed. Now that you're here with me, seeing you makes everything better."
Okay, Luo Yan: "Then we'll just watch it tonight too."
Zhou Weifang was skilled at using coquetry and whining, and she succeeded in getting her way that night.
Luo Yan herself was only half-heartedly agreeing, after all, she had only been married for a short time.
But if time is divided into several units, it will feel like it passes in the blink of an eye.
Luo Yan followed her plan, spending one week attending training classes and one week visiting friends.
Zhou Weifang would take advantage of her busy schedule to do more work, but he still kept in mind the day she had her period. That day, he went home early to prepare red date soup and waited for her to get off work.
As soon as Luo Yan entered the room, she smelled the aroma and said, "They haven't arrived yet."
"Not here?" Zhou Weifang muttered to himself, "That shouldn't be the case. You're always so punctual."
Being on time isn't always precise down to the exact minute; sometimes it's a day or two late.
Luo Yan didn't seem to care much, saying, "Maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow."
Zhou Weifang had a sudden thought and said blankly, "Could she be pregnant?"
"Huai..." Luo Yan subconsciously placed her hand on her stomach: "Didn't you already wear them?"
Zhou Weifang was certain of this because she had been running around trying to resolve the road renovation issue recently, and he was definitely keeping a close watch on her, saying, "It happens every time."
Luo Yan thought it was unlikely: "Perhaps it will be just one day later."
But her expression wavered, and she murmured, "Really?"
Zhou Weifang first helped her sit down and asked carefully, "You should have a feeling before your period starts, right?"
Feelings? Although Luo Yan didn't feel particularly uncomfortable when she arrived, she did feel a bit strange.
She thought for a moment and said, "It doesn't seem like it's going to happen right now."
Zhou Weifang took two deep breaths, almost unable to catch his breath, and said, "Tomorrow, if he doesn't come by tomorrow, we'll go to the hospital."
Luo Yan didn't quite understand, but she knew: "Even if I'm pregnant, we probably can't find out now, right?"
Zhou Weifang said confidently, "Yes, it's possible. Peking Union Medical College Hospital can do blood tests now; anyone who's recently pregnant knows that. The results are available in a day. No, let's avoid the blood test if possible. Let's wait another week."
Luo Yan turned her hand over to look at the veins on her wrist, and thought that drawing a little blood shouldn't be a problem, so she said, "I can't wait, I'll have my blood drawn."
But she asked curiously, "How did you know?"
Zhou Weifang seemed to be completely out of it, but answered quite fluently: "I found out. When we got married, I thought, if you suddenly get pregnant one day, I can't be so stupid as to be completely unprepared."
Then, with a sudden realization, she said, "Let's eat first, or it'll get cold."
Even if Luo Yantian collapsed, it wouldn't stop him from eating; he would just eat while watching him think seriously.
In that brief moment, Zhou Weifang thought a lot and finally asked, "What name should we give our child?"
Luo Yan was also a bit shocked, jumping back and forth between the two possibilities of "probably not" and "maybe". Hearing this, she laughed and asked, "What do you think?"
Zhou Weifang's mind went blank, and he said, "I'm not well-educated, so you'll have to do it."
Luo Yan had actually thought about it: "I originally liked the character 'zhu' in 'Mingzhu' (明珠), but then I found that this character is too easy to be used for nicknames, and it doesn't sound right when combined with either of our surnames."
Originally? Zhou Weifang was able to pick up on the key words this time: "What year did you think of that? When we first started dating?"
Does that mean she had planned to marry him from the very beginning?
Luo Yan suddenly reached out and touched his head: "You don't have a fever. The logic in your words is like you're delirious from the fever."
Zhou Weifang was a little confused, but he grabbed her hand and said, "Yanyan, I'm going to be a father."
Stop, stop, stop, Luo Yan: "They might be here soon."
Zhou Weifang shook his head vigorously: "No, I think so."
After saying that, he seemed to finally realize what was happening and stood up, pacing around in circles.
Luo Yan was almost dizzy from being turned around by him: "Zhou Weifang, just eat your food first."
Zhou Weifang sat down and started grinning like an idiot, frantically piling food onto his wife's plate: "Eat more."
For some inexplicable reason, Luo Yan suddenly had a gut feeling. After finishing her meal, she put down her chopsticks and said, "I want to find my mother."
Yes, yes, we should ask those who have been there.
However, Zhou Weifang also hesitated: "Are you able to move now? Shouldn't you rest more?"
What kind of question is this? Luo Yan didn't know how to answer it, and looked at him as if she wanted to say something but couldn't.
Zhou Weifang also realized he had exaggerated a bit, and scratched his head: "Shall we walk back?"
Having just finished eating, Luo Yan said, "Okay, let's take a stroll."
They strolled over and called their father, who was playing chess, and their mother, who was chatting, back home in the alley.
The elderly couple could tell something was wrong from the young couple's expressions, and as soon as they entered the courtyard, they asked, "What's wrong?"
Luo Yan was cautious in her wording: "I might, it seems, maybe I'm pregnant, but I'm not sure. Mom, please come with me to the hospital tomorrow."
The elderly couple were momentarily stunned. Liu Yinfeng pinched her daughter's arm and looked her up and down: "Are you feeling unwell anywhere? How did you know? Didn't you come today?"
As expected of a mother, she hit the nail on the head.
Luo Yan: "I'm not feeling unwell, I didn't come."
Liu Yinfeng clapped her hands: "That must be it. Let's go to the hospital. We'll go to the hospital tomorrow."
Even his mother-in-law said so, so Zhou Weifang felt it was a done deal. He said, "There's a queue to register at Xiehe Hospital. I'll go to get the paperwork done early tomorrow. You and Yanyan can go out later to avoid the crowds."
That's a good idea. If you're really pregnant, staying in the hospital for too long can easily lead to infection.
Liu Yinfeng: "Okay, I'll go there tomorrow morning."
Upon hearing that it wasn't his business, Luo Xinmin couldn't sit still: "I'll go with you."
Liu Yinfeng: "The results won't be out so quickly. We'll just go for a short while and come right back. Don't make such a big fuss."
Luo Xinmin thought that it would be inconvenient for him to run errands, and he might even have to take care of them, so he didn't insist. He just said, "Then you should go back to bed early tonight."
Luo Yan laughed and said, "I can sleep well, but you might not be able to."
She also had some worries about the unknown, but at a glance everyone seemed more nervous than she was, especially Zhou Weifang, who looked like he had no soul left.
Zhou Weifang really couldn't sleep. One sentence kept running through his mind all night: I'm going to be a father.
Even without a definite answer, he was already very excited.
When Luo Yan woke up, she could tell from his expression that he hadn't slept at all. Looking at her mother and brother, who had also arrived early, she was in a similar state. She chuckled and said, "Wait, you all came? Didn't my dad complain?"
Luo Hong wasn't joking with her. He instructed her, "I have something important to do at the shop today. Call me if anything happens, okay?"
Luo Yan said she understood and obediently told her brother to see him that evening.
Luo Hong reached out and patted his sister's head, then left without saying anything.
Zhou Weifang was in a hurry to register, and left the house shortly after.
Only the mother and daughter were left at home watching TV. Liu Yinfeng couldn't help but talk about many things when her daughter was just born. At the end, she couldn't help but sigh: "In the blink of an eye, you're going to be a mother."
Luo Yan has always loved children and was mentally prepared to welcome a new life after marriage. However, when the time came, she felt lost, saying, "I don't even know if I can do it well."
Liu Yinfeng wasn't boasting: "Have I set a good example for you?"
Luo Yan nodded repeatedly: "It's excellent."
Liu Yinfeng patted her daughter's hand gently: "That's good then. People say that the student surpasses the teacher, and that she's better than me no matter what."
Luo Yan said to her mother in a coquettish tone, "Then I still think you're the best."
For parents, hearing this sentence in this lifetime is enough to make it all worthwhile.
Liu Yinfeng glanced at the wall clock: "Almost done, let's go out."
Zhou Weifang had called a taxi in advance to pick up the mother and daughter and take them to the entrance of Peking Union Medical College Hospital.
He had already made an appointment and understood the process. He said, "Let's go directly to the third floor to have our blood drawn. Come back at 3 pm tomorrow to pick up the report."
This kind of waiting is the most agonizing; even Luo Yan felt that every second felt like an eternity.
Fortunately, the next day was Sunday, so she didn't have to take a day off and sat at home watching the clock early in the morning.
Zhou Weifang had no interest in going to the shop. After getting up, the couple sat on the sofa and chatted idly before going back to the alley for lunch.
Liu Yinfeng prepared an exceptionally lavish meal, treating her daughter as if she were already pregnant.
Luo Yan didn't want to think about anything while eating. Seeing that everyone was distracted, she didn't say anything, thinking that it would be good to get the result.
And the result was, of course, just as they had expected.
Luo Yan is really pregnant.
-----------------------
Author's Note: My previous book, "The Tenth Year of Marriage," was delayed for a very long time due to various reasons and I also had many personal issues. Therefore, I hesitated when starting "In the Hutong," fearing I wouldn't be able to continue writing it. Now, it seems I'm almost finished, albeit with some stumbles.
Let's talk about Luo Yan. As I wrote in my revised synopsis, she's "a happy little girl." This setting made me realize that writing about married life and raising children is contradictory. Being a daughter and a younger sister is a completely different role transition from being a wife and a mother, requiring a significant change in personality. Therefore, the story should have ended after her marriage. However, because I wanted a novel-like ending, I wrote a bit more.
In addition, there won't be much of a child-rearing part. It will be updated as a bonus chapter after the series ends, as a way of thanking everyone for their continued support.
The data for this book is actually just average, but I always feel happy when I see the comments, thank you everyone! I'll try to update four more chapters after I wake up, and then it will be finished.
