Chapter 59 (First Update)
The next day, Luo Yan met Zhou Xiuhe at the parking shed.
The two pretended not to know each other as soon as they saw each other, looking up at the sky and down at the ground, but never looking straight ahead.
Luo Yan put his bag in the basket of his bicycle, locked the bike, and carried his bag into the classroom.
After she had walked five or six steps away, Zhou Xiuhe casually went over and picked up his bag, judging from its weight that there seemed to be something inside.
He suddenly had the illusion that he was exchanging intelligence with underground party members, and he couldn't help but want to laugh.
Luo Yan also found it quite fun, humming a song as she went to the classroom to greet a classmate she hadn't seen during the winter break.
As everyone shared their holiday experiences, they inevitably started talking about something that students care about most—grades.
Luo Yan wiped the dust off the desk and chair before sitting down. Her female classmate Ji Ning struck up a conversation with her: "Luo Yan, did the teacher ask you to help enter the grades again?"
Luo Yan shook her head: "No."
Thinking that she would volunteer after the end-of-term exams this semester, she could save herself the worry of spending the whole holiday worrying.
She doesn't have it, but others do.
Ji Ning stayed at the school yesterday and heard a lot of rumors: "I heard that a lot of people failed linear algebra."
Luo Yan wasn't actually worried about herself, but she still chimed in, "It can't be me, can it?"
Ji Ning was also worried: "My answer to the last question was different from everyone else's. I felt it was me. I studied every day during the holiday, but I was afraid I would have to retake the exam."
Luo Yan had forgotten what the last question on the test was, and tried to comfort her, saying, "No, it's probably just a rumor."
Ji Ning said seriously, "The student in the transportation department, xxx, is the nephew of teacher xx in the academic affairs office. He knows the grades of many people."
Luo Yan was already quite capable of recognizing everyone in her class, let alone xxx from the transportation major, who looked completely bewildered: "Who and who?"
Ji Ning told her the story again, and added a news item: "Pay attention to Shanshan and Guoliang."
Luo Yan glanced back casually, then sat up straight again: "What's wrong with them?"
Ji Ning raised an eyebrow: "I'm dating someone."
"Huh?" Luo Yan asked in surprise, "When did this happen? I didn't hear about it last semester."
She just hadn't heard about it. Ji Ning: "Everyone knows."
After finishing speaking, I felt like I had excluded Luo Yan from the group, so I added, "We talk about these things in the dorm every day."
Speaking of dormitories, Luo Yan also knew something: "It seems that people are now able to live in the new building."
The new building isn't actually that new; construction was only halfway through when it was halted due to school closures. After the resumption of the college entrance examination, the school resumed construction, and it was just completed last year.
Ji Ning: "It is said that each dormitory can accommodate two fewer people."
The two of them did little to alleviate the overcrowding situation. She said, "There are still 14 left, 16-2."
Luo Yan had a rough idea of how big a room was, but she couldn't imagine how so many people could be squeezed in: "I hope the school builds a few more buildings."
Before Ji Ning could say anything, the class monitor appeared, shaking a piece of paper: "Does anyone want to see the rankings?"
Who wouldn't want to see? Even Luo Yan stood up and craned her neck to look inside, but she couldn't squeeze into the core area at all and could only sigh on the spot.
Fortunately, there were helpful classmates who glanced at her and said, "Luo Yan, you are seventh."
Luo Yan beamed with joy: "Thank you!"
As for the score, it's no longer important.
However, everyone still had to focus on the grades, and the classroom was immediately filled with chattering discussions.
The class monitor shouted, "Those who have finished reading, go and move the books," but no one paid any attention to him.
Luo Yan thought she had nothing to do, so she asked, "Where are we going to move to?"
The class monitor didn't see clearly who asked the question and said, "The academic representative is downstairs."
Luo Yan ran downstairs and huffed and puffed as she carried back a stack of books.
She ran into Zhou Xiuhe as she went upstairs and quietly shook her head at him.
Zhou Xiuhe could only pull his hand back and was pushed and shoved by his roommates to get the book.
Luo Yan made two trips silently before the squad leader was able to organize more people to do the work.
With so many people, the books were distributed quickly.
Luo Yan packed them all into her bag, copied the new semester's class schedule, and went to the academic affairs office to register Zhou Weifang.
The academic affairs teacher gave her a form: "Fill in your basic information."
Name, gender, date of birth, home address, education level, political affiliation. Before seeing the form, Luo Yan thought she might not be able to fill it out. She was surprised when she finished writing it and handed it to the teacher: "I've filled it out."
The teacher gave her another blank attendance card: "Fill in your name again."
Luo Yan neatly wrote the three characters "Zhou Weifang," then attached the photo she had taken from him yesterday. After the teacher stamped it, she confirmed it again: "Classes are held in room 302 every Wednesday and Friday evening, right?"
Teacher: "Yes, there are forty classes in total. You need to pass the final exam to receive a certificate of completion."
The emphasis was placed on the word "pass".
Luo Yan thought that it wouldn't be enough for Zhou Weifang to just pass the exam, so when she handed him the course certificate and books, she emphasized, "There's a lot of material in these that you've already studied."
Zhou Weifang understood the implied meaning: "I'll try to get into the top ten."
Luo Yan encouraged him, saying, "It's very possible for him to be in the top three."
Afraid that he wouldn't work hard, she said, "If you're in the top three, I'll treat you to hot pot."
Hot pot with mutton? Zhou Weifang wasn't after the meal, he was only after her.
He thought to himself that his childhood friend would definitely be there, and pondered how to get rid of him, revealing a hint of confidence in his victory.
That's right, Luo Yan: "I also have class on Wednesday night, I'll take you to the classroom then."
It feels like taking a child to a daycare center. Zhou Weifang: "Wouldn't that be too much trouble for you?"
Luo Yan: "It's okay, wait for me at the school gate around six o'clock."
She raised her wrist: "I have to go home for dinner; I have class this afternoon."
Zhou Weifang escorted her to the door, and only after she could no longer see his back did he carefully examine his lecture card.
The photo above was taken when he returned to the city. It's only been a year, but it looks like a lot has changed.
He sighed at the fleeting time and was about to put it away when he noticed that the handwriting looked familiar. He suddenly realized, "She wrote it."
The moment their master made the slightest sound, the two apprentices would rush over and ask, "What are you writing?"
Zhou Weifang held the course attendance certificate between his palms and said again, "Starting today, you two will have to take turns leaving get off work at ten o'clock."
It's not just because he has to go to class, but mainly because he's too busy.
This matter was discussed a few days ago. Those who work the night shift will receive overtime pay and meal allowances. The apprentices naturally had no objections, nodded, and continued working.
Zhou Weifang also put his things away and dismantled the old car he had collected yesterday.
--
Meanwhile, Luo Yan had just arrived home.
She went into the room and first covered the books, then wrote her class and name on the inside pages.
Halfway through writing, Liu Yinfeng called out, "Yanyan, time to eat."
Luo Yan answered loudly, first stuffing the books she needed for the afternoon into her bag, and then sat down at the dining table.
Liu Yinfeng picked up a piece of food with her chopsticks and asked, "Are there many classes this semester?"
Luo Yan: "It's still from morning to night."
Liu Yinfeng: "Then come back after school tonight, don't linger around."
Luo Yan nodded and showed her mother her cuff: "There's a hole here."
Liu Yinfeng: "Then change into something else this afternoon, and I'll sew it on for you."
Luo Yan also made a request: "I want a flower."
"Okay, okay," Liu Yinfeng agreed to everything, then asked, "Did you receive your student grant today?"
"Not yet, I guess it'll take a couple of days," Luo Yan remembered to share with her mother, "I'm seventh in the grade."
There are three classes in the transportation management major, with a total of about a hundred students. She is quite satisfied with this ranking.
Liu Yinfeng is barely literate, but even though her daughter ranks near the bottom of the class at school, she still thinks she is a remarkable college student.
She said, "My daughter is amazing."
I'll cook you something delicious on Sunday.
Luo Yan counted the dishes on her fingers, then swallowed hard.
Liu Yinfeng laughed: "You didn't go hungry this New Year. I see the cupboards are all empty."
There were many things that didn't require tickets before the New Year, so she bought a bunch of them as if they were free.
Luo Yan gestured with both hands: "I eat a lot."
"Eating so much, where does all the fat go?" Liu Yinfeng pinched her daughter's cheek: "She's still too thin."
Luo Yan herself was puzzled: "I eat a lot and move little. If I were a pig, I would gain several pounds."
Liu Yinfeng: "How can you make such an analogy? But if you're a little pig, you're at a loss."
Absolutely, we suffered a huge loss.
Luo Yan: "Luckily, I'm not a pig."
What else could she be? What kind of girl compares herself to a pig every day? Liu Yinfeng: "Well, I'm a pearl in the jewelry world."
"Pearl?" Luo Yan suddenly thought: "If I have a daughter in the future, this character would be very good."
Liu Yinfeng was unaware that part of her future granddaughter's name had already been decided. She said, "I almost forgot, there's still a letter from you today, it's on the sofa."
Luo Yan was embarrassed by her mother's laughter. She shoveled the few remaining grains of rice from her bowl and ran to open the container to take a look.
The contents on the paper were something Zhou Xiuhe had already mentioned to some extent yesterday, so they didn't seem to offer much new information.
However, Luo Yan was still engrossed in the conversation, wondering: Did Zhou Xiuhe see my letter?
Zhou Xiuhe knew there was something inside the bag as soon as he picked it up in the morning, and sure enough, it was there when he opened it.
He had no time to care what the candy tasted like; he hid in a corner of the classroom to finish reading the letter, blocking his roommate's view.
Seeing his mysterious demeanor, everyone wanted to gather around and tease him even more.
Zhou Xiuhe pretended not to hear, kept quiet, and put the things away.
He put the letter together with the ones he received yesterday, but when he got back to his dorm, he felt that it didn't fit anywhere. It seemed like he would be bothered by the smell of all the men in the room. He carried them around for a while, but in the end, when no one was around, he put them together with his money.
Luo Yan also hid the letters in an empty cookie box.
She has always loved collecting memories, and she still can't bear to throw away her old hair clips from her childhood. However, all her other old items are now stored away. The box that used to hold letters is placed upside down within easy reach, and she takes it out to look at it from time to time, as if it were a bedtime story.
She put the latest one in as well, closed the box, shook it, and felt a sense of satisfaction, like she had saved a lot of money. She then happily went to school.
