"Hey, what are you doing heading north? Are those two related?"
After leaving the village, in the fields on both sides of the road, there were inquisitive women who loudly asked Lin Chaobei questions.
"Auntie, this is the county..."
Just as Lin Chaobei was about to speak, Magistrate Tang quickly coughed to remind him, though he wasn't sure if the boy understood the purpose of his cough.
"Yes, yes, it's almost Mid-Autumn Festival, so I came to see how my sweet potatoes are growing."
Lin Chaobei immediately changed his story. Of course, apart from not telling the truth about the identities of these two people, everything else was true.
Magistrate Tang breathed a sigh of relief. He really didn't want to be kneeling on the ground and paying homage to these villagers after his identity was exposed. In that case, all he would see would be fear, and he would never see the bustling scene he was in before, nor would he see the villagers' normal appearance.
"The sweet potatoes at Chaobei's house are growing exceptionally well, aren't they? I saw them the other day, and one of them was this big. I heard they taste really sweet. In another month or so, we'll be able to dig them up too, and then we'll know just how delicious they are!"
The woman asked the two magistrates, Tang and his companion.
"Great! Great!"
The two magistrates answered in unison.
Fortunately, the two of them had been here for almost two years, otherwise they wouldn't have understood what these people were saying.
"That's great! When you go there, you should try it. If it's delicious, let's plant a few acres of sweet potatoes together next year, then we won't have to worry about going hungry!"
As the woman spoke, her smile grew even brighter than before.
Lin Chaobei's heart was in his throat. He was afraid that Magistrate Tang and his aunt would find his aunt too talkative and vulgar. What if he angered them and Magistrate Tang punished them?
Fortunately, Magistrate Tang showed no impatience throughout the journey, patiently answering all the questions and remarks of the aunties and grandmothers in the fields.
"Your Excellency! Your Excellency!"
Behind him, he could faintly hear voices. When Lin Chaobei turned around, he saw that the clan chief and elders had all arrived!
"Grandpa, Third Grandpa... Uncle, Third Uncle... Magistrate, he's gone."
Lin Chaobei greeted everyone, then revealed the cruel truth.
Clan chiefs and elders: ...
They're not blind!
With such a large carriage, even if their eyesight is poor, surely they could see something that big?
Why is that brat walking so fast? Hearing they were coming, he didn't even try to stop them!
Lin Chaobei had no idea that these old men were inwardly criticizing him, while happily praising the magistrate, saying:
"The magistrate is so kind! Grandfather, you don't know, all along the way, no matter what the aunties and grandmas on the roadside said, the magistrate would answer them. Just now, the magistrate even praised me as a 'good young man'!"
Clan chiefs and elders: ...
What's there to show off? If they weren't so old and frail that they couldn't catch up, the magistrate would be praising them!
But I still feel resentful! What a great opportunity to show off in front of the county magistrate! And that silly boy Chao Bei just took it all!
They also wanted to be praised by the county magistrate!
Even if I don't get praised, it would be good to show my face in front of the magistrate!
As it turned out, the group of elderly people not only ran themselves ragged but almost ran themselves out of breath, only to end up with nothing!
"Oh, oh, oh! Grandpa! Grandpa!"
One of the clan elders couldn't hold on any longer and fainted.
"Oh! Father!"
Well, the clan leader also fainted.
