When the name "Little Manniang" was uttered, Liu Shi didn't immediately realize that Yue Jiuyue was calling her.
After she came to her senses, she turned around and saw Xiaoman sitting on the burlap sack, her little head nodding sleepily. She immediately put down her hoe, quickly went over to pick up Xiaoman, told Yue Jiuyue, and went home.
Yue Jiuyue picked up the hoe again, wanting to swing it with the same force as she had that morning.
However, due to the drought, even weeds couldn't grow in the fields. Having not worked for a long time, her arms ached so much that they didn't even belong to her anymore, and she couldn't even swing the hoe.
Although Yue Jiuyue liked money, she wasn't the type to make things difficult for herself. Since she couldn't afford to use a hoe, she simply wouldn't dig. Instead, she focused on pulling out what was above ground to fill her own little coffers.
As she pulled, she discovered a hole, the hole of some small animal—a snake? A rabbit? Or a mouse?
Yue Jiuyue glanced around but didn't see any small animals. Maybe they had moved away because of the drought?
Well then, she could use this hole to do something.
"Fourth brother, come quick, I've caught two little rabbits!"
Yue Jiuyue put two small, yellowish-brown rabbits into the basket, and then grabbed a handful of bitter greens and put them in as well.
These are a pair of rabbits, just a month old and weighing only eight ounces each, one male and one female. Given the rate at which rabbits reproduce, their offspring will multiply endlessly. Then she'll have an endless supply of rabbit meat to eat!
"This is too small! It's not even enough to fill a tooth gap! But even a mosquito's leg is still meat. I haven't tasted meat in years. Let my sister-in-law cook one for us tonight, and we can eat the other one in a few days!"
As he said this, Lin Chaobei swallowed hard, clearly craving something.
Yue Jiuyue was speechless.
Although her ultimate goal in buying these two rabbits was to eat them, these tiny creatures, as Lin Chaobei said, weren't even enough to fill a tooth gap. Why didn't he think of raising them to adulthood before eating them?
Just like how villagers used to raise chickens, the eggs laid by the hens could be sold in town, and the fertilized eggs could be hatched into chicks, so the family would have a bunch of chicks. When the chicks grew up, they could lay many eggs, and then they could sell them for more money and hatch even more chicks.
With more chickens, more eggs, and more money from selling them, people stopped caring about the meager profits and were more willing to eat the eggs or chickens at home.
Instead of what Lin Chaobei said, which was to wipe out the entire lineage of rabbits, leaving no rabbit hair to be seen, let alone raise a group of rabbits to sell for money or eat.
He's simply a spendthrift!
With a "smack," Yue Jiuyue slapped Lin Chaobei's arm without any hesitation.
"Eat, eat, eat! All you think about is food! I've checked, these rabbits are a male and a female. Once they're grown up, they can have litters of baby rabbits. Then you'll never go hungry!"
After saying that, Yue Jiuyue rolled her eyes at Lin Chaobei.
"Mom, I was wrong! From now on, I'll take care of all the hay for these two rabbits! I promise I'll feed them until they're plump and healthy, so they can have lots of baby rabbits!"
Lin Chaobei ignored Yue Jiuyue's slap because she was hungry, and his eyes seemed to be glowing red as he looked at the little rabbit.
"Slap!" Yue Jiuyue slapped Lin Chaobei again.
"Are you crazy?! You can raise a white rabbit?"
