Horse-drawn carriages are a rare sight in Huandong Town, especially in the countryside. Most people use oxcarts, and even donkey carts are a rarity.
Although both are vehicles, there is a huge difference between a horse-drawn carriage and a carriage pulled by an ox or donkey. A horse-drawn carriage has a carriage body, which is like a wooden house. People sit in the carriage, which is almost like being in a house. On the other hand, an ox or donkey carriage is just a wooden plank cart, which is used to transport crops during the busy farming season. It is cold in winter and hot in summer. To put it nicely, it is an open-top carriage.
What the little girl was curious about was the carriage pulled by a horse, which was different from the others.
"That's called a horse-drawn carriage. It's like a house made of wooden planks. You can sit or lie down inside, and you can also eat and drink there."
The coachman was nowhere to be seen; he either went to tie up the horse or took it to feed it.
The carriage, however, was unloaded and placed outside Yue Jiuyue's house.
"Grandma, can I go in and take a look?"
Xiaoman'er's curiosity is extraordinary, and she has become incredibly bold. Three or four months ago, even if Xiaoman'er was very curious, she could only peek at the exhibits secretly and would never dare to ask to go and see for herself.
"Sure, but you can't touch anything inside, you can only look at it."
Yue Jiuyue gently reminded him.
"Okay, Grandma."
The little girl happily agreed, then carefully pushed open the carriage door and stood at the doorway, peeking inside again and again.
"Grandma, this carriage has a table! And a cushion! There's a window over there! And another window over there! And a cabinet!"
Little Man'er excitedly shared everything she had seen with Yue Jiuyue.
Xiao Man'er was exceptionally well-behaved. Forget about touching her randomly, she didn't even step over the car door. She just stuck her head in and peeked around a few times. Once she felt satisfied, she took a few steps back, turned around, put her arms around Yue Jiuyue's neck, and asked for a hug with a grin.
"Grandma, when I grow up, I'll buy you a horse-drawn carriage too!"
Without a second thought, Xiaoman'er made a promise to Yue Jiuyue.
This is just like modern children who, upon seeing something nice, will immediately give it to their mothers or fathers without thinking. Or they might see something on their phone or TV and say, "Mom/Dad, when I grow up, I'll buy you this and that."
Of course, where there are promises, there are demands; these are all normal reactions, so Yue Jiuyue agreed without thinking.
“Okay, then Grandma will wait, waiting for Little Girl to buy a carriage for Grandma to ride in.”
Then Xiaoman smiled even wider and nodded happily:
"Yes, yes! When I grow up and earn money, I'll buy Grandma a horse-drawn carriage!"
"Okay! Grandma will wait for my little girl to grow up and earn money to buy a horse-drawn carriage."
Yue Jiuyue picked up Xiaoman'er and walked home.
"Madam."
Doctor Li waited for a long time before Lin Chaodong's mother finally returned, only to find that the old lady was busy taking care of the child again. So he had to come out and ask her himself, but he struggled for a long time about how to address her.
The title "old lady" is usually used to address the elderly women of wealthy families in town, or the elders of the village chief's family, the wife of the clan chief, and so on. He really didn't know how to address an elderly woman in a villager's family.
An old lady? An older sister? An old woman?
In the end, he chose a more respectful title, calling her "Old Lady," which completely baffled Yue Jiuyue.
