Yue Jiuyue was numb.
So why did she agree to sleep with this little girl? She had clearly witnessed firsthand how restless this little girl was at night!
It's too late to think about it anymore.
Yue Jiuyue felt that her old arms and legs couldn't withstand this little girl's antics. Seeing that it was already 3:30 in the morning, Yue Jiuyue rolled up the quilt and blocked the edge of the bed with the pillow, put on her clothes and went out.
The nights in August weren't too cold yet.
In previous years, this season would have been the busy time of the autumn harvest. Although everyone would be exhausted, sweating profusely, and suffering from backaches and shoulder pain, they would still grin and show off their big yellow teeth when they saw the grain being stored in the granary.
There's no way around it; villagers aren't that particular, and most don't brush their teeth. Over the years, their teeth inevitably turn yellow.
Thinking back to how the original owner also had a mouthful of yellow teeth, and how she secretly brushed them with toothpaste to whiten them, Yue Jiuyue felt her stomach churning.
Forget about these things. Let's think about the good things, like when the rain stops and the flood recedes. If we can get through this year safely, she can start arranging a way to make money in the winter. Then she can really become a well-off landlady.
Yue Jiuyue was having a sweet dream, her smile almost reaching the back of her head, when suddenly she heard the sound of footsteps, followed by Lin Chaonan's voice asking:
"Mother, why don't you sleep a little longer? Are you uncomfortable sleeping in the cave?"
"Yeah, I'm not used to it."
Yue Jiuyue casually replied, then quickly put away the stool she was sitting on and quietly replaced it with a wooden stool.
"Why are you awake too? Did I wake you up?"
Yue Jiuyue breathed a sigh of relief when she saw that Lin Chaonan seemed not to have noticed her little actions.
"I'm not quite used to it either."
Lin Chaonan moved a stone over and was about to sit down when Yue Jiuyue stopped him and handed him a futon.
"The stones are still wet, even though they're used as padding."
"Mom, please sit down. I'm fine."
Lin Chaonan refused.
“Take it if you want it. I’m not sitting on a stone, it’s a wooden stool that I brought from home.”
Lin Chaonan listened before taking it.
After a moment of silence, Lin Chaonan broke the silence and asked:
"Mom, if the rain stops, shouldn't we plant wheat? We can't go out to buy seeds anytime soon this year, so should we just use the wheat we have at home?"
Yue Jiuyue: (* ̄m ̄)
Is it wrong to ask her this kind of question?
"You three brothers can handle these matters in the fields. Use the wheat from home for now, plant as much as you can. Once the flood recedes, go to the grain store in town to buy more seeds and continue planting. We have plenty of land, so plant whatever you want!"
Lin Chaonan hummed in agreement, and was about to continue speaking when Yue Jiuyue spoke again:
"The floodwaters will recede soon, and we don't know if there will be an epidemic. Remember, never breathe raw water; if you must, breathe boiled water. Also, don't eat any dead animals, not even those that have just died! Do you know Atractylodes lancea? It's called spearhead vegetable. Dig some up, boil it, and spray the inside and outside of your house to disinfect. It's best to wear a mask as well..."
Yue Jiuyue went on and on about the post-disaster epidemic prevention work, things that any modern person would know a little about.
