A group of small fish, about the length of Xiaoman's palm, swam around the wooden basin. Xiaoman watched in amazement, as if she had never seen them before.
She must have seen it before. Even little kids know how to catch fish with a basin when they live by the lake. She must have been too young to remember.
To be honest, even she had forgotten that this wasn't the first time she had ever fished since she transmigrated.
Sometimes, I feel like I've experienced certain scenes before, but I don't know if I experienced them in a past life, in a dream, or in this life. This makes my memories feel confused.
When Yue Jiuyue felt it was about time, she picked up the rope that was tied to the tattered sack, gently lifted the basin out of the lake, and peeked inside through the hole in the sack. Sure enough, there were several small fish!
Yue Jiuyue initially intended to ask Xiaoman'er to fetch the water buckets, but then she thought again that these weren't plastic or metal buckets, but rather thick, heavy wooden buckets, so she said:
"Little girl, don't move around here. I'm going back to get the basin."
Before leaving, she asked Liu, who was washing clothes, to keep an eye on things. Only then did Yue Jiuyue go home to get a bucket of water, feeling uneasy.
When she returned, she saw Xiaoman'er obediently squatting next to the wooden basin, watching. Every now and then, she would stick out a finger to poke the little fish in the basin. Her smile was innocent and bright. Yue Jiuyue had not seen Xiaoman'er smile so happily for a long time.
Yue Jiuyue picked up the basin and poured the water and fish into the wooden bucket, then asked Xiaoman'er:
"Little girl, what do you want to be when you grow up?"
This is probably a question that everyone would be asked in modern times. I just wonder what children in this era think?
"Grown up? Getting married."
Xiao Man'er tilted her head and glanced at Yue Jiuyue, as if Yue Jiuyue had asked some pointless question that made her quite uncomfortable.
"Getting married is a given; every girl will get married when she grows up. What I'm asking is if there's anything else you'd like to do or learn, like cooking, sewing, or learning to read..."
Upon hearing this, Xiaoman leaned over the edge of the wooden bucket, poked the small fish inside with her index finger, and remained silent.
Yue Jiuyue couldn't figure out what the little girl was thinking. Seeing that she didn't speak, she stopped asking and filled the wooden basin with water again, watching it tremble as it fell to the bottom of the lake.
When Lin Chaonan and the others returned from weeding, Yue Jiuyue had already scooped up half a bucket of fish. She left half for Liu to clean, and then took the other half to the lotus pond and dumped all the fish in at once.
She hadn't raised fish in the lotus pond before because she was afraid the fish would eat the lotus leaves that had finally sprouted. Now, the lotus leaves are so big that even if the small fish have good teeth and appetites, they'll have enough to eat for a year and a half.
"Grandma, the flowers in the water have all grown buds! What kind of flowers are these? And why are the buds so big!"
Xiao Man'er disliked watching Liu Shi clean the fish because the smell was too pungent. So, when she saw Yue Jiuyue carrying a bucket of water out the door, she couldn't help but follow her. She didn't even agree to let Lin Chaobei hug her and ran towards Yue Jiuyue.
As soon as she arrived, she saw many huge leaves and huge pink flower buds on the lake.
"This looks like there are two kinds of flowers, one called lotus and the other called water lily."
