Xiaoman thought for a moment and slowly rattled off a long list of names. There were no candied hawthorns among them, but she could see if they had any of the others, since she had never come to the county town to buy snacks in the summer.
"Meat buns, please! Delicious big meat buns, please! Four coins each, three for ten coins!"
"Vegetable buns are two coins each, or three for five coins!"
From afar, Yue Jiuyue heard the hawker's cries for steamed buns. Last time, she was attracted by these melodious cries and spent twenty coins to buy six large meat buns, which she then ate all of them as she strolled around.
These were genuine, huge meat buns, each one almost the size of her face. No one knows how she managed to stuff them into her stomach, but she finished them all before she even got home.
"Boss, eighteen meat buns, five bowls of mung bean soup, and a plate of pickled vegetables."
Yue Jiuyue paid the money and went into the shop first. She randomly picked a seat and sat down. Xiaoman'er sat next to her, looking around curiously. She was mainly looking at the steaming basket, knowing that it contained big steamed buns.
It was a little later than lunchtime, so they were the only family in the shop. The steamed buns, mung bean soup, and pickled vegetables were served quickly.
"Sir, eighteen meat buns, five bowls of mung bean soup, and a plate of pickled vegetables—that's all you need!"
The shopkeeper's voice was still in that kind of talking-singing tone, which Yue Jiuyue found very interesting.
"OK, thanks."
After expressing our gratitude, it was time to start eating.
Taking a bun from the basket and handing it to Xiaoman'er, Yue Jiuyue coaxed her softly:
"Come on, little girl, be careful it's hot. Eat slowly, and we'll order more if you're not full."
She was afraid that if Xiaoman saw them eating so fast, finishing one in just a few bites, she would get anxious and might burn herself or choke.
"Uh-huh!"
The little girl nodded obediently, then couldn't resist touching the meat bun with her lips.
It wasn't that she was afraid of getting burned; it was that her grandmother hadn't even started eating yet, so of course she couldn't eat first, even though she was currently swallowing her saliva frantically.
"Come on, Erhu, don't be shy. Eat as much as you want. We'll make sure you're full today!"
Yue Jiuyue offered Erhu another steamed bun. She knew that this boy was usually mischievous, but as soon as his brother and mother were not around, he would immediately become obedient and well-behaved. She was afraid that the child would not have enough to eat and would go hungry. She was not the kind of person who mistreated servants. She made sure that he had enough to eat three times a day.
Of course, this excludes years of natural disasters.
"Thank you, Madam!"
Erhu accepted the meat bun with trepidation. To be honest, he was hesitant to eat it. His mother had taught them that servants should not eat at the same table as their masters. Right now, he really wanted to run away. Even squatting on the side of the shop entrance would make him feel more at ease than sitting on this stool.
But he dared not run.
Because his mother also said that one must obey the master's words!
So, right now, there are two little voices arguing in her head. One tells her to go out to eat, and the other tells her to sit down and eat as her master says. But right now, she feels like she has needles under her butt. She really can't sit still.
"What's wrong?"
Lin Chaobei, who was standing next to Erhu, noticed that something was wrong with Erhu. While munching on a meat bun, he turned his head and asked in a low voice.
"Fourth Master, I want to eat out."
In this family, besides his mother and eldest brother, Erhu also had a good relationship with Lin Chaobei. The two were both mischievous and lively, and they got along quite well.
