"Sister-in-law, is the village chief home? I need to talk to him about something."
Yue Jiuyue didn't want to engage in unnecessary pleasantries, so she asked directly.
"Oh, my brother isn't home. He went to water the fields at the west end."
Qi replied blankly. She had hardly ever interacted with Yue Jiuyue, so she really didn't know what to say for a moment. Fortunately, Yue Jiuyue wasn't one to make friends easily, otherwise she really wouldn't have been able to handle it.
"Oh, thank you, sister-in-law. I'll go take a look at the west end."
Yue Jiuyue left after speaking, leaving Qi Shi feeling uneasy.
She didn't seem to have helped Yue Jiuyue with anything, so why was Yue Jiuyue thanking her? This made her feel that she had to do something for Yue Jiuyue in order to receive that "thank you," otherwise she wouldn't deserve it.
Qi shook her head, banishing this absurd idea from her mind.
"I didn't do anything, don't be so polite."
He muttered something under his breath, as if responding to Yue Jiuyue's "thank you," and the feeling of indebtedness in his heart disappeared.
After saying that, Qi hurried back to do her housework.
My sister-in-law hardly does any housework, after all, she's the village chief's wife! So she's the only one left to do it, since the man she married is just the village chief's brother!
Yue Jiuyue walked west along the road leading out of the village. She wasn't sure where the village chief's fields were, and the original owner's memories didn't include them either. She could only search for them slowly along the country paths.
The fields were packed with people because they were irrigating the land today!
Yue Jiuyue was still thinking, the wheat had been harvested long ago, and there was no corn in this era, so what were they going to plant?
I asked some relative who was idling by the roadside and found out that the people here plant millet after harvesting wheat.
This was the first time Yue Jiuyue had ever seen anything like it. She didn't even know when the village had planted the millet, yet it had already grown to over a foot tall.
No wonder I saw people working in the fields here the two times I went out before. I thought they were just weeding or digging for shepherd's purse, since shepherd's purse is the most common plant in wheat fields. Turns out they were weeding the millet field. I was so naive.
Following the path through the fields, Yue Jiuyue went in the direction pointed out by the nephew she had just met, and soon found Village Chief Lin, who was busy at work.
She didn't disturb them, but simply stood quietly on the path, watching.
We waited at this stop until it got dark.
Lin, the village chief, did not place himself above the villagers. In fact, because he was the village chief, he usually took the lead in the work. He did the dirtiest and most tiring work, and he was not that great, but he would not leave until all the fields were irrigated.
Food is their lifeline and cannot be ignored.
By this time, everyone was exhausted. Yue Jiuyue saw that Village Chief Lin was being helped by his two sons, so she didn't go up to disturb him.
Anyway, she wouldn't be in a hurry for a day or two, and the main reason she came out this time was to get rid of her fear of water snakes, and she had already achieved her goal.
As for the fruit tree seedlings, it doesn't matter if it's today or tomorrow, or even a few days later, as long as it's not winter.
Well, she really doesn't know much. She knows absolutely nothing about fruit trees or medicinal herbs!
