Chapter 481 The Embarrassment of Self-Awareness

This year, because many people were hired to help, Yue Jiuyue and Xiaoman'er did not go to the fields for the autumn harvest. Huang Banxian did not go because he was too old. Liu Shi and the others had to cook for the whole family. Old Mrs. Zhou had to take care of Dazhuang. Everyone else, including the younger members of the Zhou family, went to work in the fields.

Yue Jiuyue didn't know if the Zhou family children had cried from exhaustion, but she hadn't heard them. Even if she had, she wouldn't think she was too cruel. After all, their status was different now, and this was something they had to do now, something they had to adapt to.

Yue Jiuyue felt that her heart was sometimes quite cold. After all, those children were only elementary school age. In her previous world, children that age would still be being pampered in their parents' arms. Even left-behind children would be doted on by their grandparents, and they would all be spoiled terribly.

Of course, not every child can be pampered by their elders, or perhaps it's not that they don't want to pamper them, but that their families don't have the means. For example, the children of the Zhou and Wan families now, as well as the children of other families in the village, children from other villages, and the children of the Lin family in the past.

Everyone in the village knew how to harvest the other grains grown at home, so Yue Jiuyue didn't need to worry about it. She only gave instructions on how to harvest a few new grains, and then left it at that.

For example, sweet potatoes can be dried and then stored in the cellar, while corn needs to be peeled, and then the ears of corn are braided together on a rope like braiding, and finally just hung on the wall to dry, as long as it doesn't get rained on.

After the cotton is picked, it needs to be dried, and the cotton seeds need to be removed. This is not to extract cottonseed oil, but to save seeds for planting again next year.

...

The autumn harvest did not prevent Yue Jiuyue's family from continuing to build their house.

The walls surrounding the mountains have all been built. The innermost wall is very high and wide, while the extra section in the middle has not been demolished. Instead, a gate has been opened in the ravine of each mountain for easy access.

Yue Jiuyue was mainly worried that herbivores would come looking for food in winter, and if the herbivores attracted carnivores, it would be troublesome. The wall in the middle could at least block them for a while, and maybe the carnivores would really not come over here.

However, these are all just in case, and it's best if they're never needed, otherwise Yue Jiuyue will have to sleep with one eye open at night.

The autumn harvest is not yet finished, and the Mid-Autumn Festival is already here.

Yue Jiuyue sent one of her two sons to town in an oxcart to buy things, and the other to the county town in a horse-drawn cart. Each son was accompanied by someone. Yue Jiuyue felt at ease and was just waiting for them to buy the things needed for the festival. Then the whole family would make mooncakes together in a lively atmosphere, and the next night everyone would eat mooncakes and admire the moon.

Unexpectedly, not long after the two sons left, another son returned.

This son was naturally the eldest son, Lin Chaodong, who planned to settle in the state capital.

Lin Chaodong returned alone, wearing the same clothes he had brought from home. He didn't look any lighter; he was still dark-skinned, clearly having worked a lot under the sun.

He carried a basket home, and as soon as he entered the house, he grinned foolishly at Yue Jiuyue, who was eating a not-so-sweet watermelon in the main room.

He really does have that air about him, like a foolish son of a landlord.

"Mom! I'm back!"

Liu took the basket from Lin Chaodong's back and put it aside. He excitedly walked towards Yue Jiuyue, knelt down on the ground with a "plop," and then kowtowed three times.

This completely stunned Yue Jiuyue. Her mouth gaped open in astonishment, and watermelon juice dripped down her chin without her even thinking to wipe it with a handkerchief.

"Mom! I'm back!"

After kowtowing three times, Lin Chaodong looked at Yue Jiuyue with tears in his eyes, then knelt down and lay on Yue Jiuyue's knees, beginning to sob.

Yue Jiuyue is completely bewildered.

It wasn't until she heard Xiaoman shouting "Daddy! Daddy!" from outside that she came to her senses. Oh, this is her adopted eldest son!

Honestly, she was completely out of her mind just now, staring blankly at Lin Chaodong's performance.

Thankfully, Xiaoman'er rescued her. This was the first time she had ever been so grateful to Xiaoman'er; otherwise, she would have been mortified.

After all, this was the first time she had ever been so close to a boy, and this man was about the same age as her in her previous life. She was now his "mother." Knowing her place, Yue Jiuyue was incredibly embarrassed!

"Little Man'er!"

Upon hearing his daughter's voice, Lin Chaodong immediately wiped away his tears with his sleeve. Just as he turned around, he saw a red cannonball flying towards him. He immediately grabbed Xiaoman'er by the armpits, lifted her up, and spun her around in mid-air.

"Hahaha! Dad!"

"Little girl, hahaha!"

Next, we see the father and daughter reunited. Putting aside Lin Chaodong's character, the scene is actually quite heartwarming.

Following behind was Grandma Zhou. She was much healthier than when she first arrived, and she carried the heavy baby, who weighed over ten kilograms, with ease. Her expression showed both urgency and joy, all for the little boy in her arms.

The chubby boy in her arms thought she was teasing him and laughed like a hen laying an egg, paying no attention to the father and daughter playing with toy airplanes in the main room.

Grandma Zhou was helpless. There was nothing she could do. The young master in her arms was too young. He didn't understand anything except eating and sleeping. He probably didn't even know what parents were. How could he be like a young lady?

Yue Jiuyue didn't care what these people were thinking or doing. She moved her stool back a little to give them enough room to maneuver, and to prevent anyone from accidentally bumping into her head or having their shoe fly onto her head.

Just as she thought of this, she heard a "smack" sound. Yue Jiuyue looked in the direction of the sound and saw that it was indeed Xiaoman'er's shoe that had flown away.

Thankfully, there was no one there.

However, Xiaoman'er still had one shoe on her foot. Yue Jiuyue moved the stool back a little, then a little more, until she felt it was safer. Then she continued to eat watermelon while watching Lin Chaodong put down his daughter and go to pick up his son. It seemed he wanted to have a second round of the flying game.

"Hey, sir! The young master is still too young, you can't tease him like that!"

Grandma Zhou quickly stopped her.

Lin Chaodong had just lifted Dazhuang high when he heard this, so he awkwardly put Dazhuang down on the ground, then went to get a basket and took things out one by one.
